I couldn’t bring myself to watch it live, but after hearing that everyone got through it with no injuries, I watched an incredible race. First time trainer, horse bought for less than $10k and a spectacular run from dead last. Worth a look! Still freaks me out that the horse doesn’t turn 3 until next week so fingers crossed he’ll stay sound.

The best part was watching the tape of the race shot from up above. How that jockey guided the horse through the gaps that opened up to get to the inner rail was just amazing, a masterful job.

And the same jockey won the filly race by 20 lengths with a horse that they considered running with the boys…

It was great! All I kept thinking was how ****ed off the owners of the million dollar horses must be! I loved how the Jockey was so emotional talking about his deceased parents.

The same jockey rode Rachel the wonder filly? I didn’t know that. I’m glad they didn’t run her in the Derby - I still haven’t recovered from Eight Belles.

Amazing race. I’d like to show dh and ds1 the video from above as the news only showed the finish; anyone know of any links yet?

What a beautiful thing to watch.

While we were waiting for the race to start, I showed my kids Secretariat’s triple crown wins. I got as excited about the Belmont win watching it today as I did watching it in 1973.

And then Mine the Bird ran a beautiful race . . .

That really was Cinderella story. A horse bought for $9,500 who was dead last - actually he was being squeezed by # 7 and 9 just at the starting gate and finally leading by almost 8 horse length…Wow. Jockey did great, but I think it was the horse who found his way around.

Interesting that you’d mention Secretariat, ColMom. I was thinking of his breakaway at the Preakness when watching that overhead shot of MtB blowing past the field on the rail as if all the other horses were standing still. But Secretariat, aka “Big Red,” was huge, colossal, like a runaway train. And then MtB’s jockey, asked what made him decide to try to squeeze along the rail, cited what a tiny horse he was riding today!

Go New Mexico horses and trainers! ;D

Jockey had the head, horse had the heart. Together they were great! ![]()
Oh and the trainer got him there ready to run - can’t forget that part.

I lvoe that video.

While we were watching the race live, I pointed out the horse in the very back to DH and he said, “Well, he’s done.” Wasn’t DH surprised to learn this a.m. that the horse which was dead last wound up the winner! What a race! Great video!

Oh yeah – great race! And don’t we all wish we’d placed some bets on that horse??

I thought the owner looked totally stoic. Ds1 thinks he didn’t bet on his own horse and was sorry.

I loved the fact that the trainer drove to Kentucky in a pickup truck, pulling a horse trailer! He certainly was the best horse yesterday: a very convincing win. Even with the benefit of a great ride. Calvin Borel is such a character. :)

Thanks for the video link. They did let us see the actual race, but about 60 seconds after the end, the local news cut in with Cowboys Traning Facility Falling Down coverage and never returned. I wanted to see replays and interviews.

See, you can “graduate” from a lower tier school and do well! ;)

The people who bought Mine that Bird for $9500 were the Canadian owners who purchased him as a yearling, not the current ones. Dave Cotey was really the one who was largely responsible for him being in the Kentucky Derby. The horse won four Canadian races last year and was Canada’s champion 2 year old male, this is what made it possible for him to be in the Derby. He was sold last fall for $400,000 to his current New Mexico owners, and hadn’t performed well until Saturday. It was a great race, but thought I’d set the record straight with all the misinformation the media has put out there. :)

I hope I’m wrong when I say that he may never do that well again. There was very little talent at the Derby and the ones that could run seemed to not like the slop. The horses are bred so specifically now - for certain distances and conditions - that I don’t know that we’ll ever see another Triple Crown winner. Again - I hope I’m wrong. Maybe Barbaro’s full brother, Nicanor, will be magical. I think he finished second in his first two outings as a 2 year old.

It will be interesting if Rachel Alexandra runs in the Preakness - Borel can’t ride them both.
