when is the letter dated?

Feburary 15

I doubt I’ll get that likely letter even though I got the other one but the last letter I got was dated the 5th and I got it the 9th…ill see what happens

Thanks for the kind words Cavalier302, I’ve had some amazing opportunities that I have really taken advantage of and I have loved every minute of it. In fact, it was my initial experience at NASA (through SRGS) that made me realize how much I love actually being a researcher, and believe me, there is huge difference between liking/being good at science and liking/being good at research :-). (I’m still upset NASA wouldn’t pay for me to go present my research, the conference was in HAWAII!!!)

Anyways, I am very excited about UVa, I almost didn’t apply but the more I learn about it the more I like and it’s now one of my top choices. I’m still kind of leery about the quality of their engineering/physics/math departments so I’m gonna have to do a bit more research about it before taking the plunge on any school. No doubt, it will be a tough decision, and Rodman may just pull UVa above the others.

Congrats to all of you who got the letters. I have a couple friends who got the letter too but none of them are on here. We’re all really happy.

ehiunno, if you’re interested in chatting with me on AIM about the math/science depts here, you can IM me @ cavalier302. The astronomy department here is our highest ranked department in the sciences and has some very nice opportunities for undergraduates. (I’m actually kicking myself because I didn’t pursue the Astrophysics program.) Physics, math and engineering are all fine, too.

Ehiunno - I’m at VT looking to transfer to UVA for the e-school. The biggest difference i’ve found is the freedom you have in your studies. While the basis of engineering is taught, you have the freedom of atleast one elective a semester, with one a year being a humanity. While the engineering department may not be as large or as strong as other schools, its the other perks that make it appealing. Maybe you should look into going to their open house next weekend =)

So, am I correct in assuming this letter is a very good sign?

i got one yesterday. oos

s42a13g1 asks a really good question about the likely letter and if anyone previously got it and didn’t get in. I was wondering the same thing. The letter is flattering, and the school wants you to remain interested, but UVA still hasn’t made its final decisions… As Ravenna pointed out in a previous post, this letter has an anticlimatic tone…

LBP and s42a13g1, I’m certain there are things you can do to revoke your acceptance about now because they are definitely tentative. I’m sure if someone gets arrested or fails all of their classes they wont be at UVa next year.

Shoebox and Cav, I was at UVa a few weeks ago to check things out and I sat in on a physics III class. Honestly, I was extremely impressed with the way the professor was able to work with the class even though it was sort of large. I did, however, also take an engineering department tour and was not really impressed. When the tour guide was asked about engineering competitions (like concrete canoe among others) her response was something like “uh… yeah, we have those…” but she was unable to really even mention anything they do other than concrete canoe or comment on how well the teams do. With that I’m going to have to talk to some more professors and do a lot of research about research before I commit.

The biggest upside I see about UVa is what Shoebox said. I liked the engieering department at VT when I visited, but the classes seemed a lot more impersonal, and the departments other than engineering were… um… well… yeah. Lets just say if I wanted to find someone to chat about nihilism or ‘Godel, Escher, and Bach’(an amazing book) with, I would be MUCH better off at UVa.

Man, not getting likely letters sure is a pain in the ass.

I’m a dad with a George Mason (Falls Church - IS) senior who is getting an IB
diploma this year. He plans to be an Astrophysics major and got the “likely letter” this weekend. It is a pretty small program at UVa (27 majors this year). Does UVa take projected majors into account?

GPA: 4.64(W) 3.96(UW) Rank: Top 5% of 420, School doesn’t rank. One of the top high schools in Montgomery County, MD, #34 in Newsweek ranking of high schools (total BS in my opinion, the way they do it. . ). Basically, a very competitive school.

Essays: I wrote about my love for independent music (main essay, that the gist), my crazy hippie hometown (where I come from, how that has shaped me), and Jackson Pollock (work of art that has challenged me).

This is just an indication for admission to the University right? We have to wait for a call as an indication of possible echols, correct?

I’m so excited. Even though this isn’t “official,” i got deferred early from my top choice and didn’t apply rolling anywhere (unlike everyone else at school), so I have been biting my nails since December.

D got a call yesterday and then again tonight (D hasn’t been able to talk to the person yet). I’m pretty sure this is one of the calls from current Echols students to answer questions about the program. Anyone else get a similar call yet. Dean J mentions these on the blog.
