Little splurges

I forgot about soap!! That is also one of my splurges. I love goats milk soaps and the smell of some of the handmde soaps. I pick them up at farmers markets and gift shops.

I splurge on hotels. When I was young my dad became disabled. We still traveled every year, but stayed in campgrounds or slept in our car at a rest area if we couldn’t find a campsite. So it’s a splurge to sleep in a bed when we travel.

If I have an appointment, I splurge on highway tolls to save time on my way there. I take local roads back, but it’s nice to have that time saver on the way.

I splurge on candy for our candy dish too. My grandmother (and my mom when we could afford it) always had a candy dish that never seemed to be empty.

@austinmshauri

Hmmm…as I weigh whether or not to give up candy for Lent, I’m curious, what sort of candy do you splurge on?

@MomofWildChild,

Holiday Inns, Best Westerns, Hiltons, etc. And I know some Hiltons are very nice. We had to stay at The Diplomat Hotel & Resort - which is a Hilton property - for two nights a few weeks ago and I couldn’t wait to leave and go to small boutique hotel in SoBe for the rest of our stay…The Diplomat wasn’t cheap either @$385/night group rate (regular room rate was $600 for same room.)

Now, sometimes we have no choice - for instance when visiting S when he was in college in Lewiston, Maine. The nicest hotel was a Hilton Garden Inn.

We like small boutique hotels and don’t care what it costs.

No, I don’t work, but since this is a thread about the things we will splurge on, I answered the question asked.

I am not a candy person but…Eidelweiss a local handmade chocolates store, Teusher chocolates, very pricy. See’s candies medium price.

@emilybee Yes, but your comment “I refuse to stay in pedestrian ones” struck me as more entitled than most people who are even a little conscious of expenses can be.

Books and movies. I order them from Amazon as soon as the ones I’m interested in come out and don’t use Redbox or the library instead. My frugal grandmothers would not approve.

Food I don’t have to make. We do take-out several nights a week because I’m just so done with cooking. Nothing expensive but I could still save a few bucks by cooking instead.

Godiva Dark Chocolate Blood Orange Candy Bars.

Small splurges, right?

I think a hotel is just a bed and as long as it’s safe and clean, I’m happy.

I love Priceline and am not picky. If I can’t find a Priceline Hotel, I like country inn and suites, that’s about as fancy as I get.

Actually I like a hotel with free parking and breakfast. It’s where I’m most comfortable. My H is super uncomfortable with valet parking and porters.

@MomofWildChild, whatever.

Let’s see … what do we splurge on? Not much, really. Football and basketball season tickets to our alma mater. Amazon Prime. Good steaks or a dinner out once or twice a month. We also pay more for cell phone service than we have to for coverage at my husband’s hunting camp - worth every penny.

@VeryHappy - Good bras aren’t a splurge. They are as necessary to live as food, water and air.

I’m overly fond of chocolate, @Midwest67, but since I don’t have a sense of smell the expensive varieties just taste like wax to me. I like Hershey’s kisses for myself because they actually taste like chocolate and each one is only 20 calories. I can’t be trusted with larger, more calorie laden options. :slight_smile:

But for my candy dish I like dark chocolate. We have a great local candymaker who sells excellent chocolate covered berries and nuts. They’re not too big to fit in a candy dish and they’re small enough that I can pretend the calories are inconsequential.

Another vote for Darn Tough socks. Orvis dress socks are great as well. Wool socks eliminated the putrid smell in my kids’ gym bags.

I regret that I bought cheap tires when they were babies. Now as I pay tuition, I only buy the best tires.

Oh … one more thing. The $100 GoreTex bicycle shorts do not have a seam up the front…an issue for some guys.

^^^I can understand that.

Plus, fruit and protein! :smiley:

I didn’t think I was too picky about hotels, until my husband picked some dives for college tours. Um, no…

@MotherOfDragons @socalmom007 I’m in love with my eyelash extensions as well! Had them since August and my only eye makeup now is mascara on my lower lashes. Mine are blond and not that long so it makes a big difference.I wake up looking refreshed @-)

Since socks have been mentioned quite a bit, my new favorite are Stance. Nice socks, expensive but I found a couple of pair at TJ Maxx. I don’t think of good socks as a splurge, just like good bike shorts, they are necessary.

But then I’ve found out, that I like the finer things in life :wink:

I love Thorlo socks. Very comfy and prevent me from getting blisters!
