^ They had to make time to fit in Ryan Seacrest’s human interest story on the bronze medal winner, Danell Leyva. It’s very important that we see them eating at the restaurant and putting the lucky towel over their heads.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m exceptionally proud that someone from Team USA placed in the AA, but I think it’s dead wrong to do human interest stories to the exclusion of showing the actual competition. I’d love to have seen some of the other top performances!

It was so cool to see Phelps and Lochte cheer for Nathan - the comment from NBC was, “he is one of the more popular guys on this swim team” No kidding He is a nice, cute kid. Awesome race with even more awesome finish. :)

There’s a guy who is live tweeting the gymnastics competitions for NBC. He seems knowledgeable. I bet if the folks deciding what to show and what not to show consulted him, he would be able to “tell the story” a lot better. I bet John Orozco would look sadder than he already looks if he knew that NBC has only shown his bad routines in prime time and none of his awesome high bars. Jeez, NBC, even if the silver medal winner didn’t have a big reputation among the US viewers, YOU KNOW HOW IT TURNED OUT, so you could have included him in what you show us through out the night.

With that said, I really appreciate the streaming coverage. If you follow each apparatus (rather than the main feed), you get no commentary, which is pretty nice.

You can watch the replays of the events they show in prime time the next day on the web. They just hold them until after the broadcast. . All of the gymnastics finals are up now for each of the apparatus.

Women’s 8 in rowing:
USA - gold
Canada - silver
Netherlands - bronze

What a race!

The coxswain for Canada is 52 year old Lesley Thompson-Willie. This is her 7th Olympic games and her 5th medal. She’s a teacher in London, Ontario.

I am glad that NBC is giving Schmitt some attention. At first I thought they were only going to fawn all over Missy, to the exclusion of everybody else. (Don’t get me wrong - I think Missy seems great, but Allison is achieving terrific things.)

^^ I agree, Missy. I like Missy Franklin just fine, but until recently, it was all-Missy all-the-time and very little Allison (who DOES have 4 medals to Missy’s/Michael’s three).

In fact, if they’re counting medals, I think that Allison is tied for most swimming medals in this Olympics with one of the Australian swimmers.

If Michael Phelps was a country, he would rank 58th on the list of countries’ all-time Summer Olympics medal count! This is tied w Chinese Taipei and just above Georgia & Croatia.

Thanks Singersmom! I hadn’t noticed that. If I’d known I may not have bothered watching prime-time that they totally botch to the point of censoring.

I’ll third that! She is really having a great Olympic games and deserves some coverage! Someone else pointed out (can’t remember if it was here or the ‘Change on NBC’ thread’) that NBC obviously had their darlings picked well in advance of the games and fluff pieces in the can with no regard of who the actual real break-out athletes actually turned out to be. So when Jordyn didn’t make the AA her story became redemption via the team gold instead of focusing on Gabby and Aly. Good greif!!

Ok, stupid question - I’m watching the rowing - are the people biking alongside spectators or officials watching the race for infractions or rule violations?

After they showed the father from hell jumping up and down and running around like a crazed person after the 1st event and then replayed his jumping up and down and running around like a crazed person seconds later, that was it for me. I’m changing my strategy- will watch as much live on line during the day and watch the tennis at night. They’ve been doing a pretty good job of showing as many matches as possible regardless of the nationality and only break for commercials during changeovers. A lot less fluff than ESPN usually has, too.

I wonder about this–certainly, we enlightened denizens of CC are very interested in that. But I suspect that NBC’s research may show that more Americans are interested in USA USA USA plus fluffy stories about lucky towels, etc.

Nope. No still rings at all. We were talking about that last night. H was saying that the rings ARE mens’ gymnastics for him. On Saturday when I was reading the live tweets, I read that one of the Russian guy’s rings routine contained about the hardest skills ever…and no prime time coverage. I guess I need to try to find it on line later on.

Another thing I don’t like about NBC coverage is that the commentators talk a lot, but they don’t tell us what we really want to know. Like, what are those colorful panels on the backs of some of the synchronized divers? Is it tape? What’s it for? And, how does a Dutch swimmer get a name like Ranomi Kromowidjojo? (Answer to the last question: her father’s from Surinam.)

That is exactly what my D and I wanted to know. My D added in why the last two syllables are pronounced “jo ho” rather than “jo jo” or “ho ho.” Something to do with a vowel I presume.
