Looking for help with college visits - premed and volleyball

Hi,
I want to go out to east coast to look at schools and wondering if anyone has recommendations for schools with my interest. My main interest is to go to med-school so want a school that really supports students interested in this direction to get in to medical school, but does so in a supportive way (not a big competitive atmosphere). I am also very interested in playing volleyball. I would not be D1 level though.

About me:

  • GPA 4.09 (weighted - just started taking honors), 3.95 (unweighted)
  • lots of extra curricular activity (volleyball year round in club and school, basketball team, ultimate team fall and spring)
  • medical camp (either at standford or in argintina this coming summer)
  • SAT or ACT (I have not taken it yet)
  • want to play volleyball on a team (ideally D3)
  • would like a school where I could get some merit aid if possible
  • graduate in 2020

For my upcoming spring break, we are visiting east coast and possibly schools in cleveland OH.
Any recommendations of schools I should check out? Any idea would be very helpful as I am in the beginning of my search and trying to get tickets soon.
Thank you!

As far as your MD aspirations, most students who show up on campus day one as premed hopeful change their career goals, and 60% of those who actually apply to med school fail to get even one acceptance. In addition med school is very expensive and typically paid for by borrowing money which has to be paid back. It’s an important consideration for any premed hopeful to try to graduate from college with as little debt, if any, as possible. Usually one’s state flagship is the least costly option. Attending school out east will tend to be more expensive due to higher COA as OOS. Most any college/university will offer you the resources and opportunities you need to be a successful premed. Whether you succeed will be mostly on you, not the school you attend. What’s the draw to east coast schools.

I know zero about schools with volleyball. Besides D3’s, maybe others can suggest schools with club or intramural volleyball programs to satisfy your volleyball interest.

W/o test scores, we have no idea what to suggest.

First talk to your parents about how much they’ll pay each year. Then have them run the net price calculators on various schools websites…schools that you’re considering.

Don’t bother visiting schools that won’t be affordable. Merit will be applied to need first. Merit will not be applied to family contribution first.

What is your home state and what will your major be.

Thank you for the response. I am typically a strong student so would expect my SAT scores to be in the 90%-tile. My parents can pay a max of 48k per year. My sister just went through the college application process and got merit at 5 schools which put her in the range my parents can pay for some of those smaller liberal arts schools that can be pricey. However, I would also like to look at some public schools just to get a feel for what I am drawn to.

My home state is CA and not sure what my major would be. My strongest subject is math and science. I also like taking art. I would like the school to have D3 volleyball and club options.

Right now I am trying to build a list of potential schools of various types that would be good to visit to give me a feeling for different kinds of schools and environments. Any ideas of which schools might be good to visit on east coast would be very helpful!

In terms of academics (pre-med support and resources, etc.) and volleyball, you would do well to look into any NESCAC schools that might be within your estimated selectivity range. However, though the financial aid at these schools is very strong, expect it to be need-based only in nearly all cases.

I’m guessing you are female - if you’re not, a very easy way to start culling would be to print up the shortish list of colleges with men’s volleyball teams if you are interested in playing officially.

Congrats on your success so far! Keep up the good work and study for the ACT/SAT. If you have strong scores, maybe look into Case Western Reserve University. They have volleyball (female) along with good hospitals in the area. They do give merit for strong applicants and females may have an edge. We know three females who were offered merit from 28-32k per year.

Case Western might be a great option. It’s in a nice area of Cleveland (an underrated city).

Denison University is outside Columbus, OH. It has a very beautiful campus, and you’d probably be in line for some generous merit aid.

It’s a four-hour drive from Cleveland to Rochester. University of Rochester is also a mid-size national research university. Academics are top-notch, and it has a nice riverfront campus.

All these would be cold for a Californian.

Please also go to the Rhodes College Website. It’s a beautiful, top-notch LAC in Memphis.

Good luck!
