Lost Valedictorian title, I've given up, but how do I cope?

4 years of solid grades that had you number one in your school and I’m assuming various awards that just come with being valedictorian but you didn’t know until last week and no one in your school is helping you? Ok sure that makes sense.

@TigerCC2014 No need to be so offensive… Even though I have my doubts about this story (and especially since that fake SAT senior prank story is still fresh in my mind), there is no point accusing the OP without solid proof.
Innocent until proven guilty.
The advice here is still beneficial for anyone who is in a similar situation: about to lose something relatively valuable because they were accused of cheating.

As far as I have read, when CB cancels sending your scores to a college or university, they don’t report why (as they are not aware of the full situation) It simply does not show up… in which the cancellation could be due to a numerous amount of reasons, not simply assumed to be academic integrity.

I echo the thought that there are people to talk to and to please please not be suicidal. I’d honestly go to the school administration and get this cleared up before you go to CB, and get the source of the problem resolved. Clear it up with them exactly what happened, whether that be with written or other means. If necessary, lawyers and other counselors can be helpful. It seems that your school has made unfair assumptions about you without hearing the full story. I think getting someone in there to listen to you will be beneficial when bringing it up to the people in the administration who handle such things

Just saying, depending on the type of school the OP goes to, it may be very possible not to know you’re a valedictorian until the end of 12th grade. At my private high school, rankings are not reported and my friend didn’t find out she was valedictorian until last week. (We had very strong suspicions beforehand, but…)

You hit it right on the head with the fake SAT story. A senior late May so unaware of their standing for an award that takes 4 years of hard work. You are correct no proof just speculation that colleges would have offered generous merit aid for such a stellar academic record with everything offered and accepted by May 1. But again you are correct it’s just speculation.

Well I assure you this “story” is 100% legit. I would give the name of my school and all, but I’ve been warned of privacy reasons not to. Like I said, my school was very unprofessional this year. Everything was either getting cancelled or done late. But it honestly doesn’t even matter now. I’m not Valedictorian anymore and I don’t plan on attending my graduation. Too many family friends and members themselves have been told, by my mother, that I was valedictorian but it’s now gone :(. I understand suicide isn’t a logical option, but if I didn’t have such a strong conscious that always questioned things over and over, and asking “what if…?” I would have went through with it. I’m just scared of the upcoming questioning from my classmates, rumors being spread, and further embarrassment placed upon myself. I only have two more weeks of class before Regents. Classes end the 16th of June. I don’t really know how to survive until then.

You keep saying this, but this is not the case. This has possible implications for college and there is certainly room here to fight/prevent future situations like this and even reverse the decision if you got legal council, report the school to the CB, etc. Sure the title is gone but that is the part that honestly doesn’t matter. You won’t even remember/care about most of the people in your high school in six months, let alone what they think. And the title will do nothing for you four years from now.

In terms of dealing with classmates, hold your head high, tell your side of the story and let people think what they want. If people don’t give you reasonable belief why should you care what they think anyways?

Bring in a lawyer. They cannot do that. What they did is wrong and could bring them tons of problems.
BTW, offering to take the test, or another one that’s similar, in the same circumstances, should have been accepted since it’d have cleared any misunderstanding.

You will survive the emotional experience this has caused. Some of the world’s greatest literature are stories of false witness, false accusation.

An idea: Plan something wonderful for yourself to replace your graduation ceremony. Make a good memory.

Really? I’m sorry but this does not seem “legit”.

Your not accused of cheating but lose the top award. Every teacher, counselor and administrator turns a blind eye to your situation? How many AP classes did you take in 4 years? How many AP tests? What were your scores?

Numerous people point out numerous holes that could create issues for the school, and you ignore them.

You say your afraid of college finding out. Finding out what? That you were wrongly accused?

You were number 1 up until a few days ago? What are you ACT scores or SAT scores? Your class rank is top 2 percent? Did you get no merit aid? How many colleges accepted you? How many offered you merit aid?

I’m sorry and perhaps I’m too analytical but this makes no sense. An entire school is turning it’s back on the top student? Where are your AP teachers-your counselors? They are just letting this happen?

No I’m sorry

I would believe you, but all this suicide and cutting stuff makes it seem like a fake sob story. You are strong enough to become valedictorian, but can’t handle this situation? It seems overly dramatic. And if you have gotten into college, that title doesn’t really matter, now does it? If it makes you feel better, 2 years from now, no one will care whether or not you graduated as valedictorian. You probably won’t care either. If this is true, just move on. Your options seem limited and it is all based on hearsay so you don’t actually have a case.

Guys, stop saying they’re a ■■■■■. It’s not helpful or constructive. This girl needs help. You guys may be right, but what if you are wrong? You are dismissing someone in a very difficult position! And if it is a ■■■■■, what harm has there been? The damage is far greater if you are wrong, so just stop saying it. Assume you are wrong, because if you claim you are right and aren’t, think of all the pain you are causing.

I understand that you do not want to make a big deal but you do need to cause somewhat of a stir. Go to people of higher positions in your school or school district and show them college board’s rules about seating and such. Tell them that they were the ones who should be blamed for any cheating that came as a result of this horrendous testing environment and tell them that if they do not see their fault in the matter and reinstate your title and take the cheating matter off your transcript that college board will hear about their inability to offer an adequate testing environment. yes, it’s blackmail but honestly the school system is way more corrupted than this and you have the right to use any method you want to prove your innocence. You may also want to ask other students that were in the testing room with you to vouch for the inadequate testing environment. PLEASE MAKE A BIG DEAL OF IT AND DONT BE AFRAID. I sincerely hope you take my advice and fight this to your best ability.

Hasn’t it been a week already or something? Did you even do anything about it yet?

The OP is posting from a place of distress and it is best to assume that her posts are true. Guineagirl made a good point about erring in favor of the OP, because being judgmental is adding pain to what is already a tough situation. There is some good advice on this thread that could be helpful- why not leave it at that?

First of all, it is absolutely not a given that the school would report it. I daresay most schools DO NOT. They just send the final transcript. The schools I know who report these sort of things tend to require the student to do so. There are many kids who get into trouble that last term at high school, and a lot of these things are not reported. The student can ask the counselor outright if this is going to be a problem for college and if the counselor/school reports this, ask for a copy of the report, so that the accuracy of it can be examined and a rebuttal written. This is not like the counselor recs where a sign off on confidentiality is requested. I very much doubt if the school will report this, and I very much doubt that a SUNY will even care.

However, the student should report about the conditions under which the AP exams were given. That she did not know what the requirements were but now that she has found out, she can see where it can be so easy to think someone was cheating when not when the seating is not standard and she can also write that she can now see why the rules are as they are. It is not a threat, or vengeance. It is something that should be done.

Unfortunately, the way it works with these exams, as they are with many such tests, if the proctor thinks you are cheating, that 's it. You are out. No appeal. How can there be? There is no proof other than the proctor’s word. Can’t have the tests recorded on film each time. It would be ridiculously expensive . Bad enough already. Fortunately this does not happen often, but terrible for OP that it did.

OP, really, I don’t think you will have ramification from your college about this, but, you should still report the school’s testing conditions not being up to par.

Sorry for not keeping this discussion updated :frowning: I’m a terrible at keeping conversations >_< However things are seeming to be a bit better. @Animefan1998, I have been about 68% successful in conversing with my mother. I feel like things are still tense between us, but we do talk. I’m still very hesitant to move on with reporting this incident, but I have told my mom that I do wish to report this to the college board. Not only the accusation, but the seating arrangements and location we all took the test. Thanks to links given to me hear before, I discovered my school did actually violate the College Board seating arrangements. I feel like this would be a “dick” move, bringing down everyone with me, but it’s the right thing to do, right? :frowning:
Now despite this lighter news, there has been a new problem that I discovered last week Thursday. Apparently people are finding out what happened. Which is exactly what I have been trying to avoid and the reason I did not want to attend school, in case this happened. It seems my Guidance Counselor-who, I don’t know if I mentioned before, but she told me specifically that no one else would know about this except the Administration who were involved with the meeting- has been the one talking. It shocked me when I figured this out because last week Thursday, in my last class of the day, AP English, I was sitting at a table group with me friends. Right across from me was another table with 3 girls. I’ll save their names but just for it to connect with this situation, 2 out of 3 are massive gossipers. They are known to spread things that aren’t supposed to be spread, and for altering the truth. Especially one girl who I’ll name “Miranda.” (No offense to anyone named Miranda.") Now Miranda, is a girl who is part of a massive clique in my school and she is one to start drama. Always and I never liked her for it. She is rude, arrogant and treats the teachers like they are lower than here. She barely even comes to her classes I share with her. Now why is this necessary? Well because if she isn’t in class, she is ALWAYS in the Guidance Counselor’s office. No matter what. Even if the counselors are checking transcripts, she is in there, never minding her business. Every single day and every period she goes claiming she has issues that need to be taken care of. The rest of us can never talk to our Guidance Counselor (we have 2 Counselors, but one is in charge of every graduating class) in private because Miranda is always within earshot and we know she is bound to spread whatever she has heard. And what makes this matter even worse is that our Guidance Counselor does not chase her out. She simple lets her stay and no matter how we complain, nothing is done about it. This all relates to the new problem as Miranda found out about me through our Guidance Counselors. Apparently, Miranda was within earshot as our Senior Guidance Counselor TOLD the second Counselor what happened to me. AND she promised me on the day of the meeting that NO ONE ELSE was going to hear about this. Our Counselor explained everything and as I am sitting in class watching and hearing Miranda talk about me to her group, I catch them glancing at me. Multiple times. And I knew something was not right. I constantly heard her say “caught cheating”. And I knew someone twisted the story. Either the counselor or Miranda. Now I wanted to disregard this. I felt that if I ignored it, it would go away since no one has approached me directly and asked if it was true. Well that reassurance vanished, as on Friday, during the same 8th period class, a boy asked me in front of EVERYONE at his table, “Was it true you got caught cheating on the AP Calc test?” I was dumbfounded and internally shocked. I really didn’t know how to act and I was so scared as to how this rumor was getting around. It took me near forever to get his mind off the topic and divert him and his table that this was a lie and I had heard something else. To get the suspicion off of me. But I was embarrassed. Really embarrassed. And I have told my mother about it. She told me she will call some people to find out if this can be reported but I feel like the damage has been already done. This is why I am saying I have no one to turn to. Even our own Guidance Counselor. She has gone around telling all those who don’t know and making it hard for me to even look at a Janitor. I fear everyone who had hope in me, are now disappointed because a grown woman doesn’t know how to keep her mouth shut and let things stay personal. Regents are also coming up soon. I am now scared someone will be hovering right above my back as I take my French Regents because everyone knows I am cheating scum.
Now I know this new update will have a negative effect for me here as I have read all the ■■■■■ accusations, but this is for all of those who have kindly helped me through this with their advice and are interested in some type of update. I didn’t even think people were still interested in the progress. I’m really hoping there is another way to get justice without making a public hearing, as I fear negative reactions that may result from it, but I do hope this will all go away in time. As I can now address to the ■■■■■ police, like I told the first accuser, I don’t really care if you consider me a ■■■■■ based on “past experiences” you have met on this forum website. I have my very own logical reasons-and have explained why-to come here and ask for dire help because I am in a dire situation. I am a senior who will be turning 18 in, coincidentally, 18 days and I have realized from since long ago, it’s time to grow up. This is my last year as a child and I will be a young adult according to New York standards, and hopefully I will be going to a SUNY college. I don’t have the time, mindset or motivation to start, continue and edit a ■■■■■ story. I have sense. And if you don’t like how my situation sounds, and if you do not like how I ACT to situations like these, then maybe you should have raised me instead of my own parents. Raise me in a way you want me to act, because I’m sure there are many people who have said in this discussion that my situation doesn’t happen to everyone. It is RARE. So, excuse me for not knowing how to react in a RARE situation. And Excuse me for being a introvert who prefers to keep attention AWAY from herself and deal with issues in a CALM and reasonable manner based on given advice from willing and grown people. I act the way I act because it is who I am, if you have a problem with this “story” then don’t even bother commenting. Stop trying to attack me based on what you think, have experienced or have witnessed, because everyone is not the same. Or else this issue would have had nationwide recognition and I would have never even bothered coming here asking for help and guidance. I have a really big future to look forward to. I’m striving to become a Veterinarian and I need to go to college. I want to go to college without any issues on my records. I want to be the best I can be for myself and my family. And if that motivation sounds too cheesy and fake for you, ignore this post and get out. Because I have absolutely no time for games. Time is running out as I graduate on June 25th. If my pain is unrealistic, contact the ■■■■■ Bureau of Investigation and have me arrested. I’m sure you’ll get a handsome reward for your excellent detective work.
Thank you all for your dedicated time.

Well dang, you really need to start an uproar or something.

OP, paragraphs are your friend!

I apologize for the long post lol. Indeed I love paragraphs. The beauty they give a post or paper makes me feel intelligent =D In some weird sense
