Lost Valedictorian title, I've given up, but how do I cope?

Again… Scorched Earth.

Oh, girl. Now you have to look up your rights under FERPA and check how your school admin seem to have violated them six ways to Sunday. And, if your GC is a licensed professional (LCSW, etc.) she likely has violated her professional ethics and can be reported to your state’s ethics board, or whatever entity her profession has. Not to mention the HR Dept and Board of Ed of your district.

You need to start putting all this in writing, play by play. It could turn into a legal document in a hearing, etc., as you seek to clear your name. As you record your memories of what happened, include all facts you can, and write it as if you were writing to a judge or hearing officer (not to the principal or GC).

Your mom might be “old school” — where kids can’t challenge the people in authority, like principals, etc. Perhaps she could talk to a parent advocate to help her navigate this situation your family is in. Like others have mentioned, perhaps a leader in your community.

Sometimes the community-based people who have the MOST experience dealing with slipshod and unethical schools are the parents, advocates and lawyers for kids with disabilities/special ed in your town. You might want to seek help from them, for ideas.

The thing about it, is that the memory of this will likely not fade. IMHO, seeking justice is the more healthy way. At least you can say you tried. YMMV.

@VennaUmanea dyiu13 is totally right. As soon as I read your paragraph in detail, I automatically noticed that your FERPA rights were violated by your guidance counselor. As a professional, she should have known better than to spread your private information to Miranda and others. I would highly recommend legal counsel. This is no longer a valedictorian issue: what you have here is a legitimate legal issue.

Venna dear the comments above are totally correct. The school was wrong to accuse you of cheating under the circumstances (especially with seating not in compliance with CB specifications) - but disclosing private information about you or your scholastic record is absolutely unacceptable and totally illegal. As @dyiu13 says, you have legal rights under FERPA which your school has clearly violated.

You really must confront your school administration. I think you’ve been given plenty of advice on this thread, but please let us know if you need more help about where/how to begin. Take care of yourself - you have a great future to pursue.

Venna, reading through all of that makes my heart hurt for you, but you don’t want sympathy, you want change.
You NEED to do something about this situation. Report the seating violation and your counselor, too.
Don’t be concerned that it’s a “dick move”. 99% of these people you won’t ever see again. Do what’s best for your future.

I’ve been following this from the start… and CAN YOU JUST PLEASE DO SOMETHING! Defend yourself and put things right. Else you’re just letting everyone think you are a cheater. So please… go scorch some earth…

Just close this thread

Why?

Venna,
I agree with the posters who say that you need to speak up. Now, you may not know a lawyer. I don’t think I caught what income bracket you are in. But I would suggest you start by looking for the Legal Aid office in your city or county.

Also, if you have an active NAACP or Urban League, maybe there is a counselor that who can help you and your mom talk through the issues. My gut instinct is that the race card is on the table and more adults are involved than the test proctor.

Because it’s fake

Look here is what you do. I’m pretty sure if you reported the inadequate testing conditions to the college board, that your school might lose it’s right administer AP Exams, go to your principal and let him know that if he screws you, you will screw him and the whole school back 10x as hard.

@TigerCC2014‌ look at my previous post. this applies to YOU. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Im quoting it here in case you are too busy to go read it.

“Guys, stop saying they’re a ■■■■■. It’s not helpful or constructive. This girl needs help. You guys may be right, but what if you are wrong? You are dismissing someone in a very difficult position! And if it is a ■■■■■, what harm has there been? The damage is far greater if you are wrong, so just stop saying it. Assume you are wrong, because if you claim you are right and aren’t, think of all the pain you are causing.”

No too busy actually it seems the only one not listening is the person that started the thread. 2 weeks now and no action? So many holes in story and I’m sorry but lots of great advice. Too many fake stories on this blog sorry.

I guess all @TigerCC2014 wants is for this to go public instead of me trying to go around this in a civilized way so he/she may believe. It appears my way of thinking, since i’m only a child, is ■■■■■-ish and I must think and act like Tiger to make this “story” seem real! Well pardon me for not having your life and your time to update this discussion daily. But the way my life is set up, because, you know, college and all, the way this issue stands, it’s not everyday something new happens that I MUST tell everyone. If you want to see how fake this story is, hit up the FBI and they’ll let you in on some information.

But if you insist on trying to make me feel terrible for my “■■■■■ behavior”, in which you are doing a terrible job, I have actually done some action  If one can say. I live in Brooklyn, New York and on Thursday the 5th, Every child in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens had no school due to Brooklyn/Queens Day. The College Board sent out a survey to every student who participated in the AP Program this year. I filled it out and lucky me :D, the final question asked, “Is there anything else you would like to tell us?”

So I told them everything. Like I told everyone here. And if it settles your bones, yes, I have called the College Board Department to report the testing issue, however since they were busy preparing for the SATs being administered today and Sunday, they told me to call back later. And I will.

And for every other kind person, if there is anyway for an OP to post screenshots, and upload pictures to their discussions, will anyone be willing to let me know? I’m more than open to provide photos of the survey question, the email the College Board sent, and any future action taken by me that I am allowed to photo. Again, thank you all for your interest and advice is this issue. I luckily have not heard anything from my college, but I’m still looking out. I do apologize for not talking daily here, I just felt it wasn’t necessary, but if it is, then please let me know!

P.S.
I don’t know if I have said this before or not, but if my Discussion intro is confusing, just simply message me privately here and ask me to explain better. The day I wrote this, I was in a cloudy state of mind filled with anger, pain, shame, sadness and bitterness. I just ranted without proper editing, and hoped people will get it. But please, if my un-concentrated words confused the heck out of you, and it’s your evidence to fuel your ■■■■■ Police behavior, just ask me to explain. I am more than willing, and I will get the chance to respond faster since private messaging is connected to my e-mail.

Thank you all again!

No, he/she’s just too eager to call people a ■■■■■, whether they are or not.

Everyone’s a ■■■■■ on CC.

Check the Urban Dictionary

I love the urban dictionary. First source of info on everything.

First source = best source.

The pages on various high schools are great.

Link me to it because I’m too lazy.
