It’s my understanding that the waitlists are not sequential and are used to fill roles. These schools look to have the right “mix of students overall. If an international student who was expected to contribute to the music program declines, then they will look for someone who fits that same profile off the waiting list.
I’m not familiar with soccer at Andover but for many varsity sports, the coach plays an active role in admissions. They likely have a a prioritized list they’d like to go for off the waitlist if given the opportunity but it’s not purely a coach-driven decision.
A friend of my sons was admitted off the waitlist in 2024. They got notice in April, I believe and had already committed to another school. Both he and his parents are thrilled with the school they are at after dreaming of Andover for 2 years.
Take the revisit at Deerfield. I know for a lot of kids, the revisit changes everything.
Not sure this applies to anyone else here, but Western Reserve has notified by email (right at 9am EST). As another poster reported, Mercersburg is in the portal (at 10am EST).
That’s my understanding too. I have no hard data on this, but I have heard several times now that even very selective schools don’t necessarily get a great yield from their waitlist offers, because the kids have often gotten started with another great school and end up just sticking with that. But they can keep going down the list until they get the tuba player (or whatever it is) they are looking for, or until they run out of suitable options and have to plan to try again next year to fill that “bucket”.
Realistically, you should start moving forward with your favorite alternative. If a waitlist school comes through, it will be a pleasant surprise to consider. But you definitely can’t count on anything, including because it really depends on who else accepts their offers, which is entirely out of your hands.
9th grade boarding, needed FA, girl, US, competitive club athlete in one sport (not sure if recruited, but did have several conversations with coaches)
Going to give up WL options to free up space and try and visit Exeter and Lawrenceville both…but not sure about schedules as they’re all week before my spring break
Hope everyone else is having an awesome day. Going to be hard to focus today at school.
The schools themselves will not know if they are going to the waitlist until after revisit days for most of them. If Cate is still your top choice, you should email them and let them know they are your first choice and you would accept an offer from the waitlist. But in the meantime, make plans to attend and enroll in a local high school, as it is very unknown if you will get off a waitlist or not.
Choate (I expected a reject from Choate, so I’m happy about that! :))
Rejected from:
Lawrenceville

My SSAT was pretty bad (79th percentile overall). My MAP scores were 99th and 98th percentile across all subjects, so that might’ve helped. We didn’t apply for financial aid, though.
