Mad Men

Right, I didn’t expect this weakness to pop up in addtion to the others. Just surprised by it, that’s all.

With all is flaws he was always a great ad man. It was his one great strength, if you don’t count his looks.

Anyone catch last episode of “Inside the Actor’s Studio”?
Most of MM cast were there together.

Of course, I loved it- seeing what came out, seeing the actors IRL, not in character.
They are all brilliant people.
Kieran was the best- she is AMAZING! (She was kept back-stage till all the other were interviewed, to be shielded from any inappropriateness).
Christina is truly beautiful IRL.
I was a bit disappointed/perplexed by January Jones.
Just think it was a bit rushed as there were 7 people to interview- would love to see a show for each of them in the future… And other cast-members.
Learned about about each actor’s personal life, training career trajectory, and what they are informs them for MM.

Almost forgot, Matt Weiner was there. He revealed that he does have a “final scene” in mind, that he just hopes no one beats him to it (another writer/show), but did not say how far out in time that it is… He revealed how incredibly important to the concept Don Hamm is. And Don really did seem to be his right-hand man, in the way he spoke about the show overall. There seems to be a a very good group camaraderie going…

Learned that all they have are a quick blocking before each scene and a one hour reading of lines around a table- otherwise no true rehearsals!

It is such an amazing accident of fate to have this writer and these actors work together on such an interesting period.

^ I think the acting students were suprised to hear no reheasals, just a one hour table read, especially since they spend so much time rehearsing for their school productions. Jon Hamm said film is more like theater than TV in that way.

I did not realize that Jared Harris, the British actor who plays Lane, is the son of Richard Harris and Elizabeth Rees-Williams and that Rex Harrison was his stepfather. I can see a resemblance of Richard Harris. He said his portrayal of Lane is partially drawn from Rex Harrison.

How many more episodes until the end of the season? Last Sunday was the 9th, I believe.

13 episodes in a season so probably 4 more.

January Jones is sort of odd…she did not do well when she hosted SNL, in contrast to Jon Hamm. She is great in the part though.

Off to Hulu or PBS to see if I can find the video of this actors’ studio broadcast.

Keep thinking the ending has been suggested in the opening credits all along. Hope I am wrong.

January Jones… Is it possible that she lacks a sense of humor? Or that she is a bit brittle? Or that she lives in her own world?
What IS it???

No matter what the ending is, the opening credits are brilliant, including the music.
Such a mood of floating nihilism, modern disconnectedness, loss of bearings is conveyed…

I couldn’t wade through this whole thread , but does anybody else notice how MEAN Don is to Peggy all the time ? Starting way back when he wouldn’t give her a raise and told her she was lucky to have a job til recently when he yells at her often . I keep wondering if Peggy is being given the goods to launch the first sexual harassment lawsuit . Why didn’t she leave when she had the chance ? I also wonder how much inappropriate material Kieran is exposed to . I’m sure she didn’t see what we saw in the ladies lounge ,but I wonder how much she is aware of . I think she is another Jody Foster in the making ! That’s a compliment BTW .

Kieran was so well-spoken on ITAS. She is obviously brilliant, and so incredibly poised for her age. You are so right about likening her to Jody Foster. There have been a number of posts saying she was not allowed to watch the show, not allowed to be involved with much of the filming except for the scenes she is in, and speculation that she had nothing to do with the scene with Roger being serviced- it was spliced on.

She cracked the audience up when she said she is now watching some of the episodes, and that she “definitely has a good idea of what is going on”… Really?! Well, she is now 12, and loves to hit the Red Carpet, she says LOL.

She started acting at the age of 6 months, loves it. She says that she has the ability to just become the character once the director says, “Action.” Really talented and insightful.

Just watched this week’s episode which, as my son said, felt like being on an actual diet. It wasn’t especially satisfying although I do think the way Betty introduced Anne to Sally was pretty stunning. I don’t remember Don telling Megan about Anne. Did that happen on screen?

Don explaining who Dick Whitman is to Megan must have happened off screen. In the premiere it is brought up since his birthday celebration is 6 months after his actual birthday. I am guessing that Don decided to be truthful at the beginning of his relationship.

I think January Jones came off as having a sense of humor on Inside the Actor’s Studio, especially when talking about her name. She seems interesting and I think she can be charming, not in the same way Jon Hamm is, but interesting and charming nonetheless.

Don treats Peggy like a little sister. There is too much familiarity, but he has promoted her from secretary and this is the 60s. In his mind, he has treated her well and given her a great opportunity. He expects a lot from her in return.

Don and Peggy’s relationship is one of my favorite things about Mad Men. They have gone through an interesting journey together - they have both seen each other at their worst.

One of my favorite episodes from last season was The Suitcase with Peggy and Don working late and we learned a lot about how they treat each other. Don said that if Peggy didn’t join him at SCDP he would spend the rest of his life chasing after her which I think sums up their relationship well. Don can be an *** but Peggy really shoves it in his face like when they did the Whip cream pitch and said not to be mad at her she didn’t do anything wrong.

With the January Jonea thing there has been a lot of talk a out her in Hollywood. Her SNL appearance didn’t show her assets well and is consistently at the top for worst episodes. Anytime she does promotion for the show she has a sense of humor and she knows her character extremely well. I am no Jones defender but her acting on the show is particular and well thought out. Betty had some of my favorite moments in this episode.

That’s certainly striking given how the rest of the series has gone! I keep thinking Don hasn’t REALLY changed and that eventually the “honeymoon” phase of this relationship will die off… but maybe not. Especially if he can’t keep up with his work anymore. I bet his working persona is tied in quite a bit to his womanizing identity, maybe one doesn’t exist without the other…

Was the Pete scene with his “mistress” in the fur coat real, imagined or a dream. Kind of reminded me of the Don open elevator shaft scene. Has their been “imagined” scenes like this in all episodes this year? Need to go back and check.

The Pete scene was imagined.

The elevator shaft imagined.

The biggest imagined scene of the season was when Don committed murder.

I didn’t know the elevator was imagined… how did we figure that out?

I don’t think that the elevator shaft was imagined. Don really did look down it and wonder about his life. When he wanted to open the apartment windows but Megan told him about the smog alert he cheated death again.
