March break and coronavirus?

@CTMom21 What makes you think they’d return the tuition? I am fairly certain they would not. Also, I am not sure they will all have the same approach. Some are pretty remote, in states with no corona virus cases at all. So it would be very tough sell to parents to explain why they have to close, particularly since their online teaching options are quite limited.
I am with you and @soxmom on it being a disaster for my kid. Not only online studying is not very effective for him, the best part of spring for him is playing his sport and if he could not do that he would be unbearable. I would seriously consider enrolling him in LPS for the spring just so he can play (none of his teammates from BS live close enough to even practice together without serious driving on my part).

@417WHB I didn’t say (or mean to suggest) that tuition would be returned. That would not happen.

Does anyone have any thoughts on club sports seasons being cancelled? I am worried that for my son missing a season right now would be bad, really bad, for playing that sport in college. Sophomore year spring season is THE season and he’s already missed some seasons due to injury so he has some catching up to do. Sigh. I also bought plane tickets to out of state tournaments that I am now thinking could be cancelled and I’ll be out so much money. Club sports = $$$

@chemmchimney I work for a major retailer and we have a task force meeting with senior leadership daily to evaluate the situation. This meeting encompasses everything from how to keep staff & guests safe as well as inventory needs/ risks. I referenced I might have to work remotely upon returning more due to the fact that I was flying cross country in general- as we suspended all business trips for then next 30 days and have been asked not to be in social settings with 50+ people.

Also I think many institutions are doing their best to respond thoughtfully in this rapidly changing situation. Everything from major airlines removing change fees to allowing people to work from home to minimize exposure risk. Our daughters college suspended all spring term abroad programs, as such they have a whole bunch of students who now have nowhere to live this term and had planned on gaining educational credits toward graduation. They just announced each student would get a $5000 cash grant to find housing, internships etc. they are also going to be offering online courses and pay additional fees as needed, so students can enroll in alternative classes. They will also consider if any student who was scheduled to be on campus for spring, wants to change their plans, they can ask to be included in the plan they offered to the students affected by the cancellation of the study abroad programs.

We have similar concerns @one1ofeach …pre-season practice trip was cancelled for us. Also, worried about travel back to school. FWIW @vegas1 today DH tried to appeal to Delta after having our trip cancelled by school - we still had to pay the $150 cancellation fee for the tickets.

Maybe if you wait on cancelling the tickets, the flight will be cancelled and you wouldn’t have to pay a fee.

An email from a friend in China today:

“It seems the US government is not restricting domestic travel yet. The spreading of coronavirus might get worse. When it started in China, the month of January was crucial to contain the source but the Chinese government didn’t act quickly. By late January, the city of Wuhan was under lockdown but it was too late.”

A Japanese boarding school in Westchester County just announced closure for remainder of school year.

Whoa.

Wow. Given the expectation that this is going to be a problem for an unforeseeable period of time, I can imagine that schools soon have to talk about what would have to happen to justify a school closing.

Two weeks from now we will know a lot more. But that is rough timing for boarding schools as they are heading into the home stretch of the school year.

Public schools, private schools, boarding schools, and universities will soon need to make some hard decisions…

Well not great news from our daughters college today. 2 more people in close proximity to campus have tested positive. Here is the latest: social distancing is recommended-never heard this term before today.

In order to safeguard the health and well-being of everyone, The college is
recommending that all members of our community begin practicing social
distancing in order to minimize interactions with others and limit possible
exposure to COVID-19. Social distancing means remaining away from settings
where people are meeting, avoiding non-essential mass gatherings, and
maintaining distance (approximately six feet) from others when possible. For
more information, please visit
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/php/risk-assessment.html.

Undergraduate final exams will proceed this week, and we are working with
faculty to provide alternative testing locations to better facilitate social
distancing options.

Our daughter had asked to take her exams early already due to our move- so I will be picking her up Tuesday (not soon enough for me!)

DS school just finished the first week of Winterim. The Japan trip was diverted to New Orleans and the Vietnam trip to Hawaii (new locations were based on what they were studying). Costa Rica and England still ran. They have one more week and then all scatter for Spring Break. Half his school is from Westchester and they’ve just reported 3 cases. I am worried about how they will handle coming back. Seems like kids do pretty well with it, but if my kid ends up being patient zero again (we got the come pick him up, he has the flu call a couple of weeks ago), we’re going to have a problem. My husband has ILD and would probably not survive COVID-19.

Oh my gosh @vwlizard you stay strong!! Please know my thought are with you for your husband to stay healthy!!! ? ? ?

Just got a call from dd. Her college is most likely extending spring break and preparing for on-line classes. Elem ed majors who unable to complete their student teaching hours due to elementary school closures will still get credited for the student teaching hours. (There are a handful (so far) of school districts in the state that have closed school temporarily.) I have mixed feelings about this.

Our university system just restricted all non-essential domestic travel for students, faculty, and staff until further notice.

Fordham, also,

@GoatMama What are you doing about spring break? Is going home for break essential travel?

The advisory doesn’t specifically address spring break. It focuses on unversity-sponsored travel for meetings, conferences, and other events. It states, "Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to use good judgment when making travel decisions and work with campus administration to evaluate alternative methods of remote participation such as live-streaming of conference sessions and meetings. Students, faculty and staff who have concerns about being exposed to the virus while traveling should not be required to travel. Likewise, any student, faculty or staff member who elects not to attend a previously scheduled event due to those concerns should not be disciplined.”

Getting ready to land in Boston to finish up our move and pick up my daughter. Very few changes to the normal airport experience- a few masks worn and definitely more wiping down the seats- but overall business as usual on my flight out from CA.
