March break and coronavirus?

@vwlizard I hope your husband stays safe and well! Kids/young adults (and lets just say, etc…) seem flippant about it but it’s not all about them. It’s the public health concerns - and they need to be less flippant to protect the vulnerable.
And on the other end, those hoarding stuff need to stop to protect the vulnerable. Grrrrr. (Off topic, sorry.)
Back on topic, we are trying to decide if we are going to scrap our little overnight spring break weekend getaway coming up (domestic, car ride.) Both kids need to submit forms listing all places that they visited (including home) over their breaks.

@Golfgr8 There may be no cases at the Japanese school but Westchester county has nearly 100 as of today.

Spring break training trip for sports cancelled for Deerfield…anyone else having spring break pre-season sports training cancelled?

Ours were cancelled, but preseason will be held on campus. It changed my mood 180 degrees yesterday just to have a definitive answer on the trip and the optimism that they expect to have kids back on campus in 2 weeks.

As of now the OU women’s rowing training trip is still on. They leave Friday for the Olympic Training Center in CA.

My kid just heard from friends at Andover and Episcopal that they are not coming back from spring break? Not sure if they are just delaying or going online a la Harvard etc.? Anyone knows? Hope this is not a trend that would catch on.

My college daughter( along with many many other college students) was told to prepare for on-line learning post break just in case. NYC private school teachers are also gearing up for on-line learning. Have not heard of any schools not returning to campus yet though. Not at all clear to me how this will play out (on line but on campus) and interested to hear what schools have planned.

Here is a list of school closing in the NY metro area so far…also check updates if you are in Westchester County. There is a containment area in New Rochelle. Prayers for all our friends in Westchester and everywhere that is virus seems to be hitting particularly hard.

  • Hoping our schools are prudent and do not take chances!

Here is the list of schools in the NY area so far!

Hmm, @Golfgr8, I see that the list is from News12, but it’s not complete. The Masters School is definitely closed through the end of spring break, and I’m 90% sure The Harvey School and Hackley are as well. It’s possible that reporters haven’t picked up on this because the schools are technically open, as in, staff and faculty are working. But no classes and no students on campus.
None of those schools is “soundside” or near New Ro. They’re in Dobbs, Katonah, and Tarrytown.
Masters has full boarding. Hackley and Harvey have smaller, 5-day boarding programs.

Just fyi Dobbs Ferry (Masters), Katonah (Harvey) and Tarrytown (Hackley) are all in the same county - Westchester- as New Rochelle even though Dobbs and Tarrytown are on the Hudson side and not the Sound side.

Yup. Different train lines, and what with traffic and all they can seem far apart, but they’re not really.

Tarrytown and Dobbs are the closest together, separated only by Irvington (okay and a piece of Ardsley).

Thanks @chemmchimney and @HarrietMWelsch for the updates!! Keep safe everyone!

We ordered alcohol from the online chemistry store to make hand sanitizer. There is no sanitizer, no bleach, no Clorox wipes, no sanitizer wipes, and very little TP down here in the swamp. Panic buying.

runs to check TP supplies

Interesting — I have friends elsewhere in the country who have kids with upcoming band trips to Disney World that seem to be unaffected. I guess that could change, but DW seems much more risky for exposure than sports practice (though I guess it’s all a matter of degree).

Also, the CT Governor just declared a Public Health Emergency — not sure what that might mean for private schools — and the public schools have cancelled winter sports tournaments. A lot happening today.

Dr. Curtis just released that Choate students will not return to campus until April 5th (rather than March 22nd, as we were going to). Online assignments and whatever will start on March 25th. Woof.

This is exactly what Andover is doing per their website. Alas, I do not believe they will actually bring the kids back because the situation will only get worse.

Just a super friendly, well intended reminder that TABS and NAIS schools’ heads and “tasks forces” talk to each other a lot. If you’re seeing this at other schools and wondering if you’re next, you might be. Of course you might not - not much of this is one size fits all, and geography and other factors can play a big role in schools’ decisions. Just something to think about.
And PS, I truly believe that while they can’t ignore financial considerations, these people would be in different jobs if they didn’t have the health and well being of all of our kids at the very top of the what-matters list.

Mercersburg sports teams left today for spring training. They’ve been on spring break since Feb 27, before schools started announcing post-break closures, and so I imagine it would be very difficult to be “online” for any period of time, as none (few) of the kids have their textbooks or other materials they’d need. Our international students did stay on campus over break. Not saying the school wouldn’t close if that’s what’s best, but I would also hope they’d allow students to go back and pick up things from their rooms that they need. My son’s college is making similar noise, and we are to expect an email from them tomorrow with a “significant announcement.”.

Just got the email from Merecerburg, sounds like we’ll be waiting together to see what they decide tomorrow @hellomaisy !
