March break and coronavirus?

Just got an email from Peddie. Classes will be on-line for the week following spring break while they evaluate the situation further.

Waiting to hear from Exeter, but I’d be shocked if they didn’t follow the lead of the schools that have already delayed the return to campus. My son’s spring break trip was one of the very few that was allowed to go ahead without any changes to the plan. Of course, this means he is currently unreachable in the canyons of Utah, and will be resurfacing next week to a very different picture than when they hiked in a few days ago.

@CavsFan2003 is that for real about Choate having a delayed return to school ? Was there more info about classes and sports???:golf:

@Golfgr8 No news on sports! However, we’ll be doing classes online from the 25th—5th (we’re on break right now anyway).

Episcopal is doing online classes after March break as well.

Just fyi as an aside add Duke to the list of colleges closing campus. Per a parent they are extending spring break and then sending everyone home and going to on-line instruction until further notice. Today feels like a tipping point for many BSs and universities.

Mercersburg just announced it is extending spring break (which they have been on since Feb 28) through March 30. Online/distance learning will commence March 18. Re-visit days are temporarily on hold, disappointingly. I have asked if students can get into their rooms to retrieve laptops/ipads, textbooks, notebooks… waiting for an answer.

Thanks for sharing your school news, everyone! We know nothing yet - still on hold. Waiting anxiously also to hear about sports and travel - concerned about travels for sports and health issues related to athletics, also.

Just got the email from Exeter:

We will conduct classes online beginning on Thursday, March 26. Faculty will use the period from the 23rd through the 25th to prepare for remote instruction. We will conduct classes solely by remote instruction through April 10. Students should plan to return to campus on Monday, April 13. Face-to-face classes will begin on April 14. All students will remain off campus before April 13. Teachers will be prepared to continue online instruction for students unable to return to campus.

@momof3nyc thank you for the update. That is a week later return than Andover and Choate said in their communications. Not that it matters much because I don’t actually believe they will allow the kids to come back at all as by April the virus will be widespread everywhere. Spring sports are likely done for in any event.

@417WHB Agreed - I don’t think anyone is going back to campus in April. We’re now hoping the school will let us into his room this weekend so we can get his computer, clothes, shoes, etc - he went directly from campus on a wilderness hiking trip, and has none of those things.

NESCAC spring season is cancelled.

BTW - any collegiate or high school golfers who need help with practice or tee times, please connect. We are trying to start an info network over break!

All Ivy league spring sports cancelled (!!)

Westover School is extending Spring Break until the 23rd, then the next 2 weeks will be online classes only. Students told not to return until April 3 at the earliest, and that may be extended, who knows? They are keeping a dorm open for those already impacted directly by coronavirus, and those who have nowhere to go in the interim/no family here. Their Glee Club and handbell ensemble just returned yesterday from a UK concert tour.

And WPI has today notified students that they should not return till April 4. Break (which was due to end this weekend) is extended as well, with online classes beginning on the 25th. All travel, sports and other events cancelled.

SPS is switching to online classes for 2 weeks after the end of spring break. At that point, students who are asymptomatic will be allowed to return to campus, provided there are no other public health advisories meanwhile. All spring break programs and pre-season training were cancelled. Events that bring people on campus, including revisit days, are cancelled through the end of April, then the school will reassess.

Cate is extending break for a week, and then going online. They are going to reassess at the end of March, but currently are planning on kids going back April 5.

kiddo doesn’t have his books or much in the way of clothes because it was the end of the trimester and he assumed he would be back in 2 weeks. But it is worse for the international kids who can’t be at home and can’t be at school.

It is starting to get eerie. I had to drive home today in what should have been rush hour gridlock. It was smooth sailing the whole way. My drive took me within sight of the cruise ship docked in Oakland. Today I saw a couple leave a grocery store with 6 packs of toilet paper. Tom Hanks is positive and the NBA is cancelled.

DH is at Increased risk, as are my parents. Me too, truth be told. And many of my clients. I am not a drama person, and this is not a movie. I really don’t know how to think or act about it all. Other than wash my hands a lot.

Given the increased risk in your family, do err on the side of caution and try to self-isolate more. And keep up the hand washing! Best to you and your family in this surreal time.

On the bright side, as my colleague put it - I was social distancing long before it was an actual thing. :). I grumble more about having to go out than having to stay in.

@CateCAParent there’s a meme about how introverts and agoraphobes have been waiting for Covid-19 their entire lives
