D was notified that she’s a semifinalist so on to the next round!
Stats: 35 ACT, valedictorian, NMS, 4.0 u/w GPA, 4.8 weighed and the usual ECs so we’ll keep our fingers cross. Good luck everyone. The program sounds great, we’re OOS so hopefully that won’t count against us.

^ Congratulations. I’m a semi finalist as well; although, I must say that her stats are pretty intimidating compared to mine. I’m so nervous. This is going to be a long wait til January.

It’s a lot more than stats and her extracurricular activities are good, but she didn’t start a foundation or raise thousands for a cause (I saw some of those on CC) so I am sure that you will be fine. She’s just got lucky on her ACT, took it once in Dec of junior year and it looked good enough. I do wonder if SAT 2s are needed or helpful.

Krug, half of this year’s freshmen class is OOS I think. Odds are probably in your favor assuming there are more in state applicants.

Good luck to all the semi-finalists! The McDermott Scholars Program is amazing.

My son was a finalist and was offered a chance to be in the program but ultimately decided on another school. It was tough to turn down such an amazing deal at a really strong school. UTD has a lot going for it, for sure!

Burning Question: If someone turns down the offer to be a McDermott Scholar, do they give the spot to someone else?

I’m pretty sure they do give it to someone else.

sbjdorlo - where did your son end up going instead? What was the determining factor to turn it down? Just a better offer elsewhere?

My son is a semifinalist. Any tips, suggestions, guidance on the process from here out is most appreciated!

I also got a mail about the McDermott Scholarship, and was wondering if anyone can post their stats!

My son has:
ACT 35
SAT2130
GPA 4.6
class rank 2 of 400

Thanks to those that have P.M.d me. I don’t have 15 posts yet so can’t reply back. If my son makes it to the next level I’ll ask more questions.

That is really amazing stats macdallas! My class rank isn’t very high but our school is reallly competitive. My unweighted gpa is 3.95; do you think that the mcdermott program will consider the fact that it is really competitive?

I think so. But GPA is only one factor along with ACT/SAT scores, ECs, essays, interviews, etc.
I did not make it to campus for the mcdermott reception before thanksgiving but my wife and son did. Otherwise I might have a better answer for you. They were both very impressed though.

Right, that is true! If you don’t mind, what is your son planning on majoring in UT Dallas? Are there many research opportunities that UTD offers?

He is “currently” planning on BME. But they told my wife/son at the Scholars Day/McDermott reception not to get caught up on majors because most McD Scholars change their majors. Much like the average college student I guess.

And I think research opps are there and continue to grow at UTD. Cut/paste from UTDs wikipedia entry:

The Carnegie Foundation classifies UT Dallas as a “comprehensive doctoral research university” and a “high research activity institution”. Research projects include the areas of space science, bioengineering, cybersecurity, nanotechnology, and behavioral and brain sciences.

HTH!

Hey everybody, hope I’m not late to the party! Submitted my application yesterday, so it was a bit last-minute but I was gone for most of winter break. My fourth recommender still hasn’t submitted yet, so I need to go bug him today…

Anyways, for anybody interested: 35 ACT, 2340 SAT, 4.0 unweighted or 4.46 weighted GPA, 2 of 97 class rank at a very small school that happens to have a freakishly competitive senior class this year. Unfortunately, since my school is so small we have very few AP classes and I’ll have a grand total of two by the time I graduate.

Ugh. I hope they aren’t giving too much weight to the SAT/ACT as to their final decisions. They are my greatest weakness (I mean, besides not having any grand “hook” about me in the first place). So much to worry about, yet so little to be done…

Good luck to everyone!

They are supposed to announce finalists today. Has anyone heard anything? Will we get an email if we were not selected too?
