McDermott Scholars Program

This totally flew out of my mind today! I am so nervous now! I really hope they send out an email if you didn’t get it as well, or I’ll be so nervous until I hear anything! Good Luck to everyone:)

They said that they would most likely send out the notifications at the end of the day - around 5. Didn’t sound absolutely confident though.

Does anyone know how many semifinalists there are? And how many finalists they choose from that pool?

I could be completely wrong, but I remember seeing somewhere they usually picked 50 finalists out of ~500 who applied. Not sure if that means the semi-finalists + people like me who submitted in January, or overall.

they are in…just fyi and i didn’t make the cut. Does anyone know if you can still get extra scholarship on top of the AES?

I didn’t make it either… What are your stats tuttifrutti24? I got some scholarship from the school of management (on top on the AES award).

33 act (one sitting)
national merit commended
3.99 UW
27/785 (I think this hurt me the most)
Many extracurriculars (but probably not enough)
tchaikconcerto, what are your stats? Did you get the scholarship on top of the AES when they offered the AES scholarship or today when you get the McDermott Decision in the mail? What are you planning on majoring in?

Strong stats tuttifrutti24. I’m sure good things are in store for you!

2270 sat (one sitting)
Nat. merit commended
4.0 UW
my school doesn’t rank (if it did I’d prob. be 1)
ECs: 4-year All-State, National speech/debate among other things.
I got the additional scholarship 1000/semester a couple weeks ago. I’m interested in business, what about you?

I’m wondering what finalist weekend is like, and the interviews, lol. This is probably just a rumor, but I heard the interviews are intense, and so bad that people supposedly started crying afterwards?

My son made finalist! He is very excited. I wont burst his bubble and tell him he is gonna cry kathie. :)

You can kill me now. Apparently it won’t be a great waste.

tchaikconcerto, I planning on doing biochemistry and pre-med. Congrats to those who I have gotten in! And the rest of you good luck on everything else!

I got selected as a Finalist as well! I have a few concerns though: I’ve heard from a friend of mine that when he went to Finalists weekend a few years ago, they asked him to commit to McDermott and UTD on the spot (before hearing back from any other college). Is this true?

Also, this probably is a n00b question, but the hotel and everything is paid for by the program right? I live in Dallas so would I even get to stay in it? Thanks!

macdallas, I did tell my son that he’s gonna cry! He wasn’t amused…lol.

Finalist weekend is long, but a ton of fun. You really get to learn a lot about the school and especially the program. Interviews arent that bad. 2 interviews with a faculty and alum for each interview, and then a group interview. For me, the interviews were harder than any of my med school interviews. It really depends on who you itnerview with. Crying has happened before for one of the interviewers, but you probably won’t cry because they aren’t that bad.

If you get accepted, you will get a call from the director. I think you get about 2 weeks to make a decision. You could possibly have to make a decision before you hear back from other schools, depending on when you hear back.

Everything is paid for, even if you live in Dallas including the hotel. Your parent wouldn’t be able to stay overnight in the hotel though.

Would any of the finalists mind to post their stats and ECs? My brother is interested in applying to the program next year.

Here are my stats: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1371225
