McDermott Scholars Program

@bigreddawgie

Thank you so much for taking the initiative and informing us about the program and the application process. Can you inform me about some interview questions asked? How many people take the interviews? What kind of setting are the interviews held in?

The interviews are held in the McDermott offices. So you’ll be sitting in a room across from a faculty and an alum (2 on 1 interview). The interview questions are the standard questions that you can expect to be asked. Obviously will get questions about your extracurriculars, personal statements, career goals. If I were interviewing you, I would make sure to ask why you want to come to utd, why you want to be a scholar, how the program can help you achieve your goals, and how you can contribute to the program. Just be yourself!

There will also be a group interview. If I recall, it’ll be a general discussion about some topic. Of course, make sure you speak at least a few times during it.

I counted 58 names that will be going to finalist weekend.

So there’s only two interviewers? That’s nice. For the USNA nomination interview, there were 9 situated around a conference table. I didn’t know who to look at!

I’m interested in the group interview, as I’ve never heard of anything like that before. Is it a current event-type topic or more ethical/political?

So what did everyone think of the weekend?

I thought it was fantastic. Very well organized and very thorough coverage of information about the McDermott program. And the investment going into campus is really amazing.

My son felt like he was the dumbest one there. :)

Post any phone calls (offers) or emails (rejections) if you get them and good luck to all the finalists!

The weekend was well organized and provided all the information you needed. I wish I hadn’t been local so that I could have stayed in the hotel as well!

I do know that decisions are being made as we speak because my child was called last night (Monday) and offered the scholarship!

We got the call last night too!
Surprised but thrilled!!!

If you were lucky enough to have received a call from the McDermott Scholarship already, PLEASE, PLEASE by all means keep it private. The director of the McDermott Program made it a special point to request that all who received the congratulatory call to refrain from broadcasting it out of consideration for those who are still waiting. So PLEASE keep your good news private for now. If you are one of the Finalists who is still waiting to hear, you’d appreciate this gesture of consideration. Thank you.

I didn’t know we were supposed to keep it quiet - sorry about that. Since I’m divorced and we don’t live together, my kid just texted me the good news since I was out of town for work, but he neglected to mention that one detail.

Congratulations to all who were finalists and to all who are called to be McDermott Scholars!

I’m a parent of a student who was offered a spot as a McDermott Scholar last year but ultimately, my son chose another school. I have wonderful memories of the Scholars weekend (and yes, they paid for me to stay in the hotel) last year. Everyone was so nice and UTD has so much money! It was a tough decision for my son to say no to all that the McDermott Scholars had to offer.

macdallas,

Sorry. I just went over this thread and saw a question for me.

My son chose to attend MIT.

I wish you well!!

Looks like they they start announcing the week after the Finalist weekend (usually around end of February) . When do you have to accept the award ? What is the deadline ?

A close friend’s son was just named a McDermott Scholar. They are very excited to know the fellow scholars finally after weeks of not knowing.

The McDermott Scholars’ names have been finally made public. There are 21 for the freshman class of 2013. Ten come from Texas. Eleven come from the following places:

Alabama
Alaska
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Indiana
Kansas
Missouri
New York
Romania
Virginia

Nine are female, twelve are male. Congratulations all of you! You worked hard over the past years to get to this level of achievement. Take a breather before you start at UT Dallas.

@MidWestFather - I can’t find any links to the info you posted. Can you help please ?

The official announcement of the McDermott Scholars has not been released yet, but I can attest to the accuracy of the information from MidWestFather because my son was named a McDermott Scholar for 2013. As soon as the official public announcement is released, I will provide a link or attachment to it here on CC. Thanks.

I still can’t find the official announcement. I see only the 2012 scholars in their website.

Nice student profile on 2013 McDermott Scholars !!!

Could anyone explain what semi-finalist status entails?

I am a semi-finalist for Mcdermott and I got notified that I got the AES Honors scholarship. Maybe this means i have a good chance of being a Finalist. If you are offered the Mcdermott Scholarship how much time do they give for us to think it over ? Do they give enough time to ponder ? Any past recipients care to comment ?

Finalists attend the McDermott Finalist weekend in late February. Decisions are made starting soon after that weekend and extend into April or May so a successful Finalist could be informed anytime during that period. It all depends on the candidates qualifications as a class and the McDermott evaluators’ availability to review and decide on the candidates. Once a successful Finalist is contacted with the offer of the scholarship, time flies quickly. There won’t be much time to ponder. You won’t be able to hem and haw. So be ready to decide to accept or not, if you’re one of the successful Finalists. The McDermott program is one of the best scholarships in the country. Many successful Finalists turn down the Ivy’s/MIT/Stanford to accept the McDermott. There are plenty of worthy Finalists each year so successful Finalists need to decide quickly. So do your homework early.
