Congrats @marksman4 !
Just called the office… they said that they are still in the process of sending out emails, and that those who are rejected will be notified as well.
I don’t think I’ve ever been this stressed in my life. @4blessings We still have a chance!
@4everEpical I’d say we have less than six hours before we find out. This is extremely stressful.
Still no email for me either… When I found out that some people got finalist emails Sunday I lost pretty much all hope, so thank you @4everEpical! I submitted my application only a day or two before the deadline, so maybe this is the price I have to pay.
No email here yet either, although my D is off at a soccer game, so she might have gotten something and not told me, although I think she would at least text if she knew. One of her recs was from a former scholar…similar stats to others that I’ve seen.
Just got mine; it’s a no. My stats were similar to the ones I’ve seen posted, so I did sort of think I had a chance. Ah well.
@elk1122 Thank you for letting us know. I’m so sorry for you, but I wish you all the best in the future.
Will you still be attending UTD?
Thanks @4everEpical. I’m not sure; it really depends on the money. Their National Merit package is very very nice, so I’m definitely still considering it.
Just got my rejection email… I hoped that my ECs, leadership, and recs would make up for my sub-par test scores (2080 SAT, 31 ACT) but I know that the students who typically receive the award usually have near perfect scores and awards with good leadership as well.
I didn’t make it. Congrats to everyone that did.
It looks like they are only sending out rejections…
Yep. A no here for my girl as well. This crosses UTD off her list.
I haven’t heard back yet, they must be sending the rest out tomorrow … At this point I’m definitely expecting a rejection
Is the Mcdermott application portal updated with the results? Even if rejected?
My daughter’s was not updated, even though she didn’t make finalist.
I got rejected
Same here. Son got rejected.
Hey I found out I was a finalist for the 2015 finalist weekend, and I was wondering if any current or past McDermott Scholars could give me so advice and what to expect for the weekend. One of the biggest things I am confused about is what to wear? like for interviews, symphony, saturday events…etc. The other things I was wondering about is how the interviews are structured. Any possible advice would help alot. Words cannot explain how excited I am for this opportunity, and I honestly want to be admitted into this program more than anything in the world!
Hi @podallassm, I’m a 2014 Scholar. For the meet and greet with the freshmen scholars on Friday evening, dress in business casual, a bit less formal than the interviews (for example, no jacket, tie optional, but can show character). Saturday will be generally business, meaning suit jacket/slacks/dress shirt ensemble for the guys, and a formal, but comfortable (probably knee-length) dress for the ladies. A suit and slacks would also be acceptable if you would prefer that instead of a dress. Think of it as Sunday best, on a Saturday. The symphony would be the same attire. After the symphony, you’ll head back and get into some casual clothes (jeans, Tshirt, polo, etc.) and meet with the senior McDermotts. Sunday is just as casual as Saturday late night.
Interviews are split into two parts, the individual interview and the group interview. The group interview is structured a lot like a Socratic seminar, but only the inner circle. The interview committee will offer a topic, often related to a current event (read up on your news), and then discussion will begin between the 10 or so finalists. No further comments will be made by the committee unless there are questions or a new topic must be brought up based on time constraints. Individual interviews are between you, a faculty member, and another member of the interviewing committee (often an alumni or other program-related person). The questions in this interview are often tailored to your individual application, so reread everything you submitted and be prepared to discuss your application.
Other advice I can offer is to stay relaxed. Be confident, but not too confident. Take your time during interviews to think about the question and come up with a coherent, thoughtful response. Again, don’t stress, be yourself, and talk to the scholars you have the chance to meet. Ask questions while you still can. All of this is easier said than done, but I wish you the best of luck, and I can’t wait to meet you that Friday!
My DD is a finalist but we were unable to get to dallas until late Sunday evening due to the weather. She was interviewed on Monday along with one additional late comer. For those who were there for the whole weekend, what was your impression?
