Meaning of Q1 Grade Request?

I’ve noticed that some students have had their Q1 grades requested while others haven’t.

What do you think this means?

No Request = You’re already In/Out

Request = Borderline?

^That’s my speculation, any concrete reasons?

FYI: I just e-mailed my GC and he said that he hasn’t sent of my Q1 grades to Penn.

I believe that is the case…it is likely since why do they want to spend time reading more documents unless you are on the border?

Ahhh, that makes me really nervous, because I’m positive I’m not an “In” candidate. My GC hasn’t told me that Penn requested my Q1 grades, though, (and I don’t even know if she would tell me if they did), which I think means I’m already out. :frowning: And if they DID request my Q1 grades, I’m out too, because they weren’t so great.

^Wow such optimism!

If everyone thought like that then only I would get in and Penn would be boring!

No, but seriously you can’t write yourself off like that. Nobody has any idea what the adcom is looking for or why they would even want Q1 grades. We could be very wrong and the real reason could be something completely different.

you mean upenn actually asks 1st quarter grades from applicants? i’ve never heard of that

Do they ask our school? I’ll check tomorrow.

yea i want to ask tomorrow too…

they asked for mine…i’m so lucky senioritis didnt hit me until after Q1…4.0 :)

and of course the only reason why we’re scrutinizing over this is because it’s so hard to wait another 4.5/5 days until decisions! at least it keeps me occupied… i should be studying for a french test.

the only reasons i can think of are:

1) borderline
2) “big committee” deliberation
(1&2 sort of go hand-in-hand i guess…)
optimistic:
3) penn wants to admit the student but just wants to make sure he/she is keeping his/her grades up =D!!!

haha.
but my guidance counselor got the call on thursday (12/6). don’t you think that’s a bit late for big committee if penn is done with the process? or maybe it was a last minute thing…which makes me think borderline is what Q1 grades are for

If you’re not borderline and you don’t think you are auto accepted, then you could still be deferred (not that chances of admissions are high once you are placed in that catagory)

A kid from my school applied to DMD last year and got in. Guess what…they didn’t ask for his first quarter grades.

^What’s DMD

dmd is the digital media design program.

Uh…*****. My quarter 1 grades we’re pretty mediocre. They were very slightly above my GPA, but there’s a reason that that is so low (freshman/sophomore years). What would you say is the likelihood of having these grades requested?

probably not very likely since decisions are 4 days away

Well not now, what’s the likelihood that they did request my grades? I was never told so by my counselor, but that doesn’t mean it never happened.

i have had very strong grades untill this year.
They aren’t bad but if they were my grades throughout high school i would not be applying to Penn.
Penn asked for my grades.
I know this is all speculation but any thoughts on how this will read.

I think its because you’re borderline accepted/rejected and they want to see who’s been keeping up. Don’t give up hope though, it’s just a speculation. Maybe they accepted you and want to see if you’re keeping up.

i just asked my guidence counselor today whether or not penn asked for my grades…and they didn’t! i’m taking that as a good sign

^Do you have strong stats? If so, then that would corroborate our theory
