Miley Cyrus at the VMAs

lol, Cartera.

So true, cartera! I had no idea who this Robin Thicke was until a few days ago. About the end zone… wasn’t it the other way around?

At the risk of sounding like mini, I, too, had never heard of Robin Thicke before this mess, but I’m a country music person…

I mean…it’s not a bad thing if you’ve never heard of Robin Thicke. He’s just an R&B singer. If you don’t listen to that kind of music, you wouldn’t be familiar with him. It’s the equivalent of an R&B singer not know who Jason Aldean is.

I had never heard of Robin Thicke till a couple of weeks ago when I read an article in the local paper about a new reality show being filmed. The reality show will feature the entire Thicke family.

Perhaps because a reporter asked her?

The media outlets are going to milk this until it goes dry.

Eventually, it will all blow over and the next “big thing” will capture the collective attention.

Because I no longer have kids in the Disney age group, I’m asking, is there another up-and-coming Miley Cyrus/Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake in the pipeline that I’m not aware of?

That’s what I find oddly amusing here. The media has milked it, yes, which is what Miley’s handlers wanted to happen to boost sales/merchandise, etc. However, what I really wonder is, for those who were never MC fans, was this performance really going to change their minds? No. I’ve not read one post on CC (or other comments on other internet sites) from anyone who indicated they were not MC fans, but now seeing this video had turned them into fans. Sure, the video got lots of hits this week from people who did not see the show, but people who were never going to buy her stuff are not going to change their minds after seeing the performance.

Likewise, those who are already MC fans were probably going to buy her new stuff anyway, regardless of whether or not she did this performance. She has a new CD coming out, so her profile was going to get a boost, anyway, regardless of the VMAs.

I just don’t think the performance did much to boost what was likely going to be increased publicity over the next few months anyway, with the new CD coming out. I doubt she’ll see one red cent from anyone here who has spent six days talking about this extravaganza, but it doesn’t keep us from talking about it.

Very true. I just watched his video on youtube, in an unrated version. All I can say is that one of those girls is getting maximum mileage out of her implants.

And “Robin Thicke has a big ****?” Were they afraid that someone would miss the point if they didn’t literally spell it out? Ye gods.

I knew who Robin Thicke was but wasn’t a fan. I had a girl crush on his mom many years ago. I remember seeing her many times on the Merv Griffin Show and the Carol Burnett Show. I wanted to be just like her.

I think the VMA’s will pay off big time for Miley. She added something like 50000 Facebook friends that day. It caused me to do some research into her new album, which I never would have known was due to be released soon. I won’t buy it but there had to be others who also checked it out and, if they didn’t like the current hit, they may like the new ballad.

But I don’t think that new facebook friends are an indication of a spike in her popularity. I’m sure some of them are just curiosity seekers. No different from buying a ticket to see the bearded lady at the carnival.

Well they weren’t entirely naked - topless and thongs.

I didn’t watch the entire unrated music video. It was boring. Not that the other version was any better.

I don’t see anything wrong with it myself. I wouldn’t care if everyone in it were completely naked. I just opined that I thought it was a marketing decision to jump start his career.

Well, I have a problem with a bunch of girls parading around half naked while being ogled by fully-clad men saying “I know you want it” and “X has a big ***” and words to the effect that “I’ll split your in two.” Obviously YMMV.

I wouldn’t mind a video in which men and women danced together in a sensual manner.

Maybe they should have asked Gloria Loring what she thought about THAT. Or whether her son really does have a big ****.

Well, I just watched the unrated version of the video and think it sets women back 50 years. Really, just degrading.

I’d have a problem if they were forced to do it, but I’m sure that casting call was packed. These are performances and all were willing participants with their own reasons for participating. The women are beautiful and they seem to have the upper hand throughout. The foam finger does have a much smaller role and I love the choice of shoes. I like the platform sneakers. Miley wore similar ones on the VMA show. Those sneakers were a much better choice than heels.

You mean all those dances in which the men lead and the women follow?

The reason I didn’t like it (other than personal preference) is that its only purpose was to provoke. I know a lot of pop music is shallow, but there are often messages behind them or personal statements by the artists.

Kanye’s performance was about racism, Katy Perry’s about standing up for yourself, Gaga’s about celebrity culture, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s about gay rights, etc. Even Kesha and Flo Rida are mostly about having a good time/enjoying life.

Miley’s performance came off as a f— you to her critics. She could have said that in a classier way.

Also I’ve heard that since Gaga wore a thong and a bra at the VMAs, she should be viewed equally.

The seashell thing was actually a reference to Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus painting. Nudity is not necessarily sexual.
