Rapey Mrs. Robinson’s got nothing on stalkery Benjamin. The guy follows the girl to Berkeley, rents a room nearby, follows her around , ruins her dates and wrecks her wedding. How romantic.

Elaine must have had self worth issues running off with a guy she knew had been intimate with her married Mom.

^that’s how I saw it, hotcanary! Mr. R and Benjamin deserved each other; poor daughter got caught in the middle.

I think the only bigger waste of energy than attacking MC’s performance is defending it. Two sides of the same coin, and a lot of people making money off it.

Here’s a comprehensive, articulate breakdown of Miley’s performance (and everything of hers of late).

(Might have to put http:// in front).

Yes, and he is the VILLAIN. One of the reasons I love the movie. Remember the song that juerk sings about being a “real” man? Priceless. (The only thing it really suffers from is the usual Missing Mother syndrome. What’s up with that, Disney?)

Cartera, I don’t have cable, and have only seen Morning Joe two or three times. I was impressed with Mika every time. Is Joe the guy who was shouting next to her? He eventually made some sense, but his behavior was obnoxious, IMHO.

Yup.

For the record, back in the day I also found Madonna crass and revolting, particularly her book Sex and all that stuff. Age has nothing to do with it. On the other hand, I love Beyonce’s Single Ladies video.

CPUscientist, thank you. I had not seen more than a glimpse of the part where she was performing with bears, and didn’t realize that they were all women of color, and that she slapped one’s behind. OMG. It goes from bad to worse.

I actually feel a bit bad that The Graduate is one of my favorite movies…Benjamin was such a stalker!

The thing about pretty much every comparison on this thread is that The Graduate and Baby Jane and Prince, etc. all had some level of artfulness or sensuality at some level. Miley’s performance was about a sexy and artful as being mooned by a bunch of 80 year olds.

Same here. As I mentioned, I didn’t actually watch the show - just saw a few clips on You Tube.

Is it possible that MC’s performance ultimately will result in ripping off the lid of the racist nature of feminism?

[Is feminism racist? ‘Solidarity is for white women’ hashtag points finger at lack of diversity in female-related debates | Mail Online](<a href=“Is feminism racist?
I can’t imagine watching Miley’s performance if she were my daughter! Obviously Miley did this for the attention and has been very successful in that respect- her sales have gone sky high since VMA. I’m sure she is laughing at all of her detractors all the way to the bank. But if I were her parent, I would not be sleeping at night knowing that if she is so comfortable with those moves on an international stage and with a 36 year old man, she is probably doing much, much more that we can only imagine (wait- let me wipe any of those type of images from my brain!)

Honestly can’t believe that she did this on live TV. I was watching
This with my parents and it got super awkward really fast. Thanks Miley.

And we wonder why other cultures hate us and want to fight to the death to keep us away.

07DAD - every movement in America has excluded/does exclude people of color. Feminist movements, LGBT movements, etc. Unless it’s specifically about race. People listen more when white people speak up about injustices (exhibit A of plenty: <a href=“One Easy Thing All White People Could Do That Would Make The World A Better Place - Upworthy);%5B/url%5D”>One Easy Thing All White People Could Do That Would Make The World A Better Place - Upworthy); and when one doesn’t have the experiences of being a person of color, it’s easier to ignore those people because their problems are too complex to fully understand from the outside.

Black Feminism arose because of this - black women have 3 axes of oppression upon us - race based, gender based, and class based - that the (white) feminist movement doesn’t acknowledge. (Intersectionality)

It’s ok, I’m sure her dad will be holding the camera when she’s sunk low enough to need to “accidentally” have a sex tape leak out.

Thanking God for so many blessings tonight. Continue to pray for world peace. More love …less hate.

CPUScientist, that Jezebel article is the biggest crock of nonsense I’ve read in a long, long, time. Example:
Let’s get real–she headed straight for urban music because it’s where the sales and money are, because no one would buy her interpretation of Duke Ellington. As for her supposed negative portrayal of black womanhood–which I don’t see at all in that performance, but I’ll concede for the sake of argument–the denigration of black women in urban music can hardly be laid at Miley Cyrus’ feet, nor can the adoration of thug culture and music. The author should save her outrage for the black male rappers who dragged music into the gutter long ago.

Thank your white privilege that you can say that, and believe it. I’m sure you don’t read articles written on topics on race from a POCs point of view. If you did, you’d know a lot more than you do (which is next to nothing). I have nothing else to say.

Yep, if you let your children’s adoration for pop culture icons rise to the level of idealization and imitation, the joke’s on you.

Have to laugh and say ‘silly you’ to folks whom are aghast that “Hannah Montana” appeared onstage in a very bad, talentless performance. Folks, IT WASN’T HANNAH MONTANA. Obviously. Hannah Montana is just another fictional character. What you saw last night was perhaps a glimpse of the real Miley Cyrus, and that’s her business…not your kids.’

One white girl “appropriates” the nasty tropes of urban music and that’s a problem–but somehow the people who invented and perpetrate those nasty tropes have no responsibility because they’re “authentic” and there’s “white privilege” and blah blah blah. Spare me the outrage at Miley Cyrus appropriating a valuable cultural marker like twerking. Also, spare me the outrage at her use of black back-up dancers who, so far as I can tell, voluntarily went up on that stage.

Why can’t all female performers be like Tina Turner? The fabulous costumes (what there are of them)! (see link)
[Style Icon: Tina Turner « MadameNoire | Black Women’s Lifestyle Guide | Black Hair | Black Love MadameNoire | Black Women’s Lifestyle Guide | Black Hair | Black Love](Style Icon: Tina Turner — MadameNoire)

When Ike and the Ikettes used to play at Market Hall in Dallas (in the very early years) they performed on a raised stage and the view was part of the show.

And she has lived with (and just married) someone 16 years younger than she. Just about the age difference between RT and MC.

I can’t think of any actor, actress, or pop star either of my kids viewed as a role model. That role was filled by family members, some teachers and a few beloved soccer coaches. They still keep in contact with some of those folks, particularly the soccer coaches.

I don’t think either girl ever watched Hannah Montana, though they did like Miley’s song Party in the USA and even played that song at our July 4 lake party.

Kudos! Do you know, did either girl watch the VMA?
