Very much. According to [the College Board](http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=2350&profileId=1), racial/ethnic status is considered “Very Important”, right up there with rank and ABOVE the SAT scores.

yeah, according to this study released by uva admissions office, african american students have something like an 80x better chance of getting in over a similar non black student.

What about hispanic students?

i wish i could find the article, its somewhere on the uva forum, im just too lazy to look through every post. but if i recall it was based on like “ratio vs. white students” or something like that, and asians were like .9, whites were 1, hispanics were something like 1.3 and then blacks were like 80. the numbers i believe referred to the chance of getting accepted vs. a similiarly credentialed white candidate.

the hispanic one doesn’t really matter too much because, quite frankly, not many hispanics apply. i have a feeling they’re treated pretty much the same as whites and asians.

In other words you have a great chance because I feel the UVA is very desperate for minorities from the phamplets and research i’ve done and also they have a seperate section for minorities to fill out their applications

cool thanx everybody…this has helped a lot

candyman, you’ll have a reasonably good shot, assuming you get a good SAT/ACT score.

Also, disregard nerdyuscgirl…she’s just being obnoxious.

Oh yea, here are the stats that jags mentioned:

http://www.nas.org/reports/foi/AA_at_3Us.pdf</a></p>

“What about hispanic students?”

At UVA, hispanics receive little if no preference in admissions.

To Candyman990, I think that you have a good shot with your current GPA. Make sure that you that you do well on the SATs, and write a good essay.

heheheh thanks for calling me obnoxious Cavalier302 that actually made me laugh but sweetie i just tell it like it is <----- in other words the truth and they seriously do have a seperate section because i applied there but besides that Candyman302 in other words you have a chance and don’t deny cavalier because it’s true well byyee

~ Britt

how does applying to uva suddenly make you the tomb of knowledge on how the school deals with minority applicants. i guess me and every other uva student missed that lecture at orientation?

nerdyuscgirl, I never said he didn’t have a good chance. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Your posts read like they’re written by an over caffeinated preteen girl.

play nice children

NerdyUSCGirl,

UVa has the 2nd highest number of black students among all public schools in the country (8.5%) along w/ Florida. UNC has the most w/ 11%, so UVa isn’t desperate (as you like to say) for minority students.

Plus UVa has the highest graduation of black students among all public schools in the country, so UVa does a great job in educating all its students (minority or otherwise).

http://www.jbhe.com/news_views/49_blackenrollment_publicivies.html</a></p>

Don’t be bitter because you had to settle for USC, my dear.

Do you find at all that students that do not drink but still like to go out and have fun, have a harder time fitting in/finding things to do here? I have heard diff. opinions and I was just wondering bc I LOVE uva

well it depends ashley. i’ve never seen someone discouraged from going out because they don’t drink…but then again, i’ve never met anyone who doesn’t drink have a lot of fun times with people who do drink. i don’t really know what people who don’t drink do. Everyone who drinks takes a friday or saturday off eventually, so even if you hang out with your friends who are boozing its not that big of a deal. However, I think I would grow tired of being around drunk people when I’m consistently not drinking.

Again, as for the non-drinking social scene…I don’t know what they do. I mean, theres only so many movies you can watch, and going downtown isn’t that much fun. Only so many concerts one can go to.

I’m sure the biggest drinking segment of the school is the greek scene and thats only like 33% of the school. Even if 80% of the school hardcore boozes, thats about 2500 kids who arn’t. They must be doing something.

Looks like the cops are trying to put the clamps on the biggest party of the year.

yeah, they say that every year though. pfft…

thanks for the update. Does anyone else have any opinions on this? Wondering also- how big is the average class size? Of course it is more work than high school…but to what extent…do peopel find it doable or does it really depend on ones courses? Also…how do the different sororities differ?
