Movie recommendations

I saw The Lobster. I really wanted to see this movie, but I did not like it. Would not recommend it.

Lobsters are one of the favorite icons of surrealist painters, I wonder if it had anything to do with this movie (based on the reviews, lol).

ETA: my husband saw this, he really liked it, but he likes weird dystopian movies. He was telling me about it and I was like, stop, you’re freaking me out!

I can’t wait to see Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. I like my movies silly and escapist, and I really like Anna Kendrick as an actress.

DH and I saw The Lobster–he liked it and I was disturbed and horrified by it. The only reason I went to see it was because it had decent reviews and Colin Farrell’s in it. I would never recommend it to anyone.

On the other hand, I loved, loved, loved Love and Friendship! The funniest Jane Austen movie I’ve ever seen!

What was so funny about it? To me, everything was so predictable.

The Lobster reminded me of Wes Anderson’s movies, only much, much darker. I enjoyed its aesthetic and humor, though it won’t be one of my most favorite films of all time.
Husband thought it wasted 2 hours of his time…

I went to me before you. Liked it. A bit sentimental but had beautiful scenery. I don’t understand the title. It doesn’t seem to fit the movie.

It’s hot. I thought I’d turn off AC and go to a movie using senior discount. Any other movie recs? I’ve watched most recommended on the thread so far.

The new Star Trek is amazing

^I’ll keep that in mind. I hope I am not shocking anyone by saying that I am not that into star trek

The Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Go see it right now.

I second the recommendation upthread for Life, Animated. Two others that I would recommend: Captain Fantastic (with Viggo Mortensen) and Other People (Molly Shannon from SNL in a non-comedic role). Another recent film that I really liked–Don’t Think Twice–about a struggling comedy improv group. The director ( who is also in the film) Is
Mike Birbiglia. Birbiglia was featured in an Ira Glass program about sleep walking. Glass is one of the priducers of Don’t Think Twice.

I recently saw “The Innocents” which may not be playing nationwide and is not light entertainment by any stretch. It is Polish-French movie and features the actress who played the aunt in “Ida”. It is pretty searing film based on a true story about a convent in Poland post WWII in which a young French doctor is called to a convent in which she discovers a group of pregnant nuns who had been raped in the last days of the war by a group of Russian soldiers. Trust me that this film is very thought-provoking and will definitely stay in your mind afterward.

If you decide not to go out . . . I watched “Mustang” on Netflix a few nights ago, and was floored by how good it was. Made in Turkey (and in Turkish) by a young Turkish woman who lives in France. Five orphaned sisters, roughly 17-10 when the film starts, live with their grandmother in the countryside near a small village. Rambunctious and loyal to one another, their high spirits provoke anger in traditionalist neighbors. Their conservative uncle prevails on their more laissez-faire grandmother to lock them up, essentially, and to teach them more appropriate behavior. So the girls are imprisoned in what the youngest – who turns out to be the smartest and strongest of the bunch – calls a “wife factory.” Things are more nuanced than that – there’s little question the grandmother and her friends love the girls and want the best for them, and understand that they need protection. The five sisters cope with things differently, and with different outcomes, so you get a sense of many possibilities.

It’s a really beautiful film with some thrilling sequences, and the performances by unprofessional actresses playing the sisters are amazing, especially the oldest and youngest sisters. One review I read got it very right by saying the film did a perfect job of simultaneously critiquing the sexualization of everything girls do by conservative Islam and celebrating the girls’ sexuality as inherently part of their personalities.

Thank you for excellent suggestions. I am keeping a list.

If you enjoy movies about chefs -Le Chef is a lot of fun. Not to be confused with (the also extremely enjoyable)Chef which is about a guy who takes a road trip with a food truck after being let go from his restaurant, and of course there’s also Ratatouille. We’ve enjoyed them all.

I don’t know if you can still find it in theaters, but we all loved Central Intelligence. (“We” being college students to adults.) It had quite a few good laughs in it - very creatively done.

Otherwise, I’m reading this thread with thoughts of heading to the theater relatively soon on my mind too.

My college guys weren’t terribly impressed with Finding Dory (said Finding Nemo was better and Finding Dory wouldn’t stand on its own). I figure we’ll catch it on Netflix at some point - maybe.

@mathmom Le Chef was fun. I also watched Mustang following @JHS. It was excellent.

I’m really looking forward to seeing “Florence Foster Jenkins” when it’s released next month. Meryl Streep and Nina Arianda - now there’s some acting firepower. Directed by Stephen Frears, too! I’m also a fan of Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg, so I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

I don’t think we’re really talking about new DVD releases on this thread but I have to say that the Batman vs. Superman thing is probably the worst movie I’ve overheard in the past few years. Couldn’t stay in the same room with it. Longest ending ever.

I saw Finding Dory with my nephew. It was… pleasant. I’ve never been motivated to watch all of Finding Nemo.

Recently watched Dark Horse–a documentary about a group of working class people in Wales who decide to breed a National Hunt racehorse. Very enjoyable.I also saw the new Tarzan movie, and Whisky Tango Foxtrot. Left the former wondering how they managed to keep the pants barely on Tarzan. The latter was a much better movie than I had been led to believe. I liked it quite a lot.

^^I agree with you about Whiskey Tango Foxtrot-it was pretty good (I also wasn’t expecting a lot).
