Speaking of food movies… “Somm” is a documentary about sommelier training. Our entire family, including a teen, loved it. It is not new and Netflix has it.
Ghostbusters and Star Trek Beyond were enjoyable.
Jason Bourne was good.
I have been on a tank movie kick lately and recently saw “Fury”. Overall, great movie. The Hollywood-style ending and anti-American tone turned me off, but the cinematography and atmosphere were very well done.
Saw Florence Foster Jenkins this weekend. Wonderful, and I think Hugh Grant’s performance was Oscar-worthy. Meryl too, but that’s a given.
@fractalmstr After you finish the tank movie genre, have you done a submarine movie genre yet? Das Boot is by far my favorite. So much tension.
@doschicos Oh yeah, Das Boot is a great movie. B-) I also like Crimson Tide, K-19, and some of the old classics like Run Silent Run Deep, and Destination Tokyo.
Yes, H and I enjoyed Florence Foster Jenkins last night. It was well done and poignant. Lots of excellent acting.
Second Das Boot. And Hunt for Red October if fun.
Greater - not sure if it is being shown nation-wide yet.
I saw Das Boot about 40 years ago!
I saw Das Boot in the original German version. 35 years ago not 40, but still a long time ago!
We had a Red Box coupon and got Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. We really enjoyed it. It was very poorly served by the Tv trailers.
We also enjoyed Mr. Holmes.
Another vote for Florence Foster Jenkins–we took my mother-in-law, who is an opera lover and didn’t know what the movie was about. She thought it was great.
Can I enjoy FFJ if I hate most operas?
@mathmom, yes. There are no opera productions in it, just concert singing.
Well yes, but it’s the opera singing I dislike. And then done badly! I do like a few operas I’ve seen - all the Mozart ones, Carmen and I enjoyed seeing Orfee - though mostly because my sil knew the countertenor.
However, I made myself watch the entire Ring Cycle when we were in Germany, and it was a slog. I hated Verdi’s Macbeth. I fell asleep watching Salome. I don’t like American songbook type singing or most current musicals either.
I just saw “Hell or High Water” and loved it - although I usually hate westerns and/or chase movies. It’s nothing like Florence Foster Jenkins, though.
@mathmom, I like opera, generally, and I would find the Ring Cycle a slog. On the other hand, I love and adore the classic American songbook: Porter, Gershwin, Kern, et al.
What kind of singing do you like?
Classical singing, I love Schubert’s Schoene Mullerin and Winterreise. I love The Messiah. I like nearly all rock music from Doo Wop to Alt Rock. I like most folk music. I like some Hip Hop. I like quite a bit of Metal. I like classic country, haven’t kept up much with the genre since the early 80s though. Though I hear more these days since my younger son has a few artists he likes and plays. Love bluegrass. I like a lot of African music. I like some reggae.
I’m not too fond of rap, or contemporary pop. I always want to like the blues more than I actually do. I’m not very picky!
