Movie recommendations

I wouldn’t worry too much about being bored with FFJ because it has operatic music in it, about all you hear are small snippets of people singing (other than FFJ of course, or rather Meryl Streep forcing herself to sing horribly). To be honest, while in some ways it is funny to see, for example, the lengths the husband goes to keep her from seeing reviews or others from telling her how bad she is, I also had trouble laughing at FFJ herself, her story was not about a well off socialite thinking she was great, it was about someone who was musical who had her dreams shot to hell by a stupid father and then by the poison she took in an attempt to treat the syphillis she caught from her husband, among other things the heavy metals would have made her hearing truly bad where she couldn’t even tell…and a lot of people exploited her as well. The movie was well done, Streep is amazing in it, I don’t like Hugh Grant and he was good, as was the Pianist.

I highly recommend a documentary, “The English Surgeon,” about a neurosurgeon, Henry Marsh, who has done many surgeries in Ukraine and supported the efforts of a surgeon there. I learned about the movie while reading Marsh’s memoir, "Do No Harm. Both movie and book are great.

Here’s another vote for “Hell or High Water” a modern day Western action but multi-layered exploration of characters, beautifully acted, beautifully filmed, should receive several acting nominations.

Just watched Spotlight on netflix. Excellent. Intense.

I saw Spotlight in the theater with my S & DIL over the holidays and loved it. Watched it again on Netflix in early July and loved it just as much.

Another vote for Florence Foster Jenkins. You don’t have to know about or even like opera to “get it.” But if you have ever been involved in music, even church choir or high school band, you will appreciate the emotions expressed. I was really fascinated by the artistry and dedication of Streep, who sings well although not operatically, and worked to make her singing just bad enough to make you cringe. Also Simon Helberg (of “Big Bang Theory”) who is the pianist, and essentially transformed himself from a pretty good jazz/pop player to a classical accompanist. They performed all the music live.

I also enjoyed Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

I vote for FFJ as well. I don’t know anything about opera. It’s completely irrelevant to understanding the storyline. And there isn’t enough opera singing in it to turn off someone who doesn’t like opera singing. The singing is only to demonstrate her lack of musicality - this ain’t Glee here where the songs are the stars.

I like Hugh Grant and I’m really hoping that was makeup, otherwise that means that he has aged considerably, which means that I have too!

Kubo and the Two Strings was good. Stop motion animation films are an acquired taste, but this was well done.

Saw the new Woody Allen film (Cafe Society) last week. It was OK–I may be all wrong, but I feel like WA keeps doing the same themes over and over–just in different settings. That being said, Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart gave excellent performances.

@Bromfield2, I felt the same way. If Jesse E. had been wearing glasses, I might have believed he was WA.

@PizzaGirl, are you aware of the documentary by Ron Howard coming out next week?

I’ve known about it for a year, and I already have my tickets

^^^^Lol, I can’t believe I even asked you that.

Thanks to those who recommended Hell or High Water. My son-in-law and I watched it earlier today and both of us really liked it.

We saw Hell or High Water, expecting it to be an “old” western movie, but it is a current-day western movie. I loved it. It really deals with current issues and people’s attitudes towards those issues (poverty, racism, corporate greed, absentee fathers, domestic violence, the oil and gas industry, and retirement to name a few). It makes you think, as not everything is black and white. Having lived in TX, I thought they did an excellent job of making everything realistic. H liked it, but thought the violence was a little too graphic.

Has anyone seen the Sully movie? Any good?

I saw Sully this weekend. The theater was packed. H & I both agreed that while it was entertaining (in a suspenseful kind of way), it had more of a “made for TV” feel to it. I’m probably in the minority, but I didn’t feel it was quite as good as the reviews suggested. JMHO.

We did get to hear “Sully” talk live at USoCal’s engineering grad ceremony in May 2010. He seemed very humble and spoke well. That was one of the more memorable grad speakers I’ve heard.

@Pizzagirl, thought of you, as our CC superfan, while watching the Beatles segment on CBS Sunday Morning with Paul, Ringo, & Ron Howard:)

I saw Southside With You yesterday afternoon. Rotten Tomatoes has it rated at 7.4/10 and I think that’s about right. An enjoyable 90 minutes, IMO.
