My money is on (the first two-thirds of) the Road to El Dorado meme:
Just so odd… He was clearly wealthy going to a 40k a year private school. He was valedictorian of his highschool and went on to an Ivy League school where he graduated with an engineering degree. Just seems like Health insurance costs would not be an issue for him.
His LinkedIn indicated that he was still employed there, although of course it’s possible he had left and just never updated the end date.
But he may have had grievances about medical insurance companies or other parts of health care. A former roommate told CNN that “Mangione had surgery earlier this year that left him with screws in his body. “He sent me the X-rays,” Martin said. “It looked heinous, with just giant screws going into his spine.”"
His Goodreads (before it was taken down — that’s where the 4 star review of the Unibomber was along with the Lorax/1984/Hunger Games/Harry Potter/econ books!) had many books on back pain management.
The Twitter banner featured a Pokemon, a photo of his spine (probably those exact X-rays), and a photo of himself.
LA Times cites a TrueCar spokesperson that said Mangione stopped working there in 2023, which given his Feb 2024 foray into Unabomber extremism suggests to me a mental decline.
Seeing various reports that he had fallen out of touch with his family sometime this year. They were trying to reach out him apparently through Facebook friends. Sounds like it coincides with the back surgery/chronic back pain.
If he indeed had issues with his spine, I wonder if he was prescribed painkillers which could have affected his mental state… what a sad situation all around. Two families are left with irreparable trauma.
Well, I’m feeling much more sympathetic to the family of the CEO. The assassin, not so much.
He tweeted about Joe Rogan, Thiel, etc., clearly was super into intellectualism and self-improvement, was “anti-woke,” and talked about how lower Japanese birth rates are a cultural problem with immigration not being the answer, etc. A family of his is an elected Republican official. Stereotyping … but in similar circles of (sometimes comfortable), striving Gen Zer men. **
Then became anti-capitalist and apparently an environmentalist. Yet shows up at Starbucks and McDonalds. Suddenly decided to go after the CEO of an insurance company while own family is in healthcare. Probably quit a well-paying tech job in California. Has a manifesto in his pocket and allegedly a youtube video (taken down) set for December 11th saying that he’ll get arrested.
Something made his ideas change quickly while contradicting themselves.
**Not saying these things are unusual for young men, and I don’t mean to sound derogatory before someone attacks me.
But once they have the onset of symptoms, they are no longer high functioning. This man was, until recently.
Of course there is no excuse for what this man has done. It is heartbreaking that two boys lost their father. There is though no indication that the killer’s family was aware of anything, so unless new information comes out, I am sympathetic to both families (but not the killer, there is a difference). How would you feel if your adult child has done something absolutely terrible that you had no control over? That is the pain they will have to live with for the rest of their lives.
Supposedly he has a Utube channel linked to the account @PepMangione, that shows a timer with the following:
- 5 second countdown
- 60-second timer
- “if you see this i’m already under arrest.”
- The Truth
- “soon…” in the lower right after the timer expires
- “Dec 11th” appears/disappears once
- “All is scheduled, be patient. Bye for now.”
Let’s not forget he shot an unarmed man in the back! With this post he is obviously craving attention. In my opinion he is either a radicalized egomaniac, and/or he’s possibly on mind-altering medications/drugs (prescription or not) that triggered a schizophrenic break. The back injury may have been the precipitating event but who knows.
I’d be extremely disappointed and mad at my grown adult offspring.
Yep. But their relative/son is still alive.
I wonder if he was on pain meds? Maybe feel into a depression. You just never know. You look at him and his social media and think he looks like he has a good life. Something had to go terribly wrong for him to do such a horrible thing.
I typed my responses before reading yours lol
