Murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO

DadTwoGirls
December 8

jonri:

These were doctors and nurses saying that UHC is particularly bad about approving claims.

I have heard a nurse / manager / administrator say the exact same thing about UHC. This is something I knew about way before this particular shooting occurred.

Perhaps we should have another thread on medical insurance denials. I would have a story to post.

Question for the lawyers: would that be allowed? Or would that be considered an invalid and unrelated reason?

I don’t think generalities always work. People can hide symptoms and others can overlook them for a long time. I am now much more sympathetic to people going through mental illnesses after seeing someone go from being happy and on top of the world to a full psychotic break in a matter of two weeks, due to a side effect from medication, stress and lack of sleep. When I see someone going through psychosis, I realize that the only difference between them and someone else who is able to deal with it, might be that someone recognized it in time and got them help.

I don’t give a rip why he did it. I hope he has to serve a lot of time in prison if he’s found guilty for the crime.

People are noting that the guy in the Starbucks stillshot doesn’t have a unibrow while Mangione clearly has one. Also skin tone is lighter in the Starbucks photo but that could be lighting. Hm.

That area can be shaved/not shaved. Depends on how quickly that hair grows on him.

Makes sense. But in a couple days? I’m South Asian and it takes a week … and even then it’ll take time to revert to “normal.” Also, why would someone walk around with a gun, manifesto, and fake IDs if they’ve intentionally ditched a backpack in the middle of central park?

I’m not anticipating any new developments tonight. However, the flags have been frequent, and the moderators will want to sleep. I’m giving it about an hour and then closing the thread for the night and will reopen in the a.m.

Knowing why may help avoid someone else doing a similar act in the future.

Not a lawyer but I am pretty certain it could not be used in trial based on what I know of the law, because that would be in effect saying it was a justified homicide. If he had had a bad experience with United Health Care, ended up saddled with debt, etc, they might use it to try and claim temporary insanity . but I don’t think that would work.

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life.

The customer who initially recognized the suspect and alerted the McDonalds employee deserves the majority of the reward money, IMO. And that customer is wise to keep their name out of the news.

This guy actually fits the profile of something we saw a lot of in the 1960’s, groups like the SDS were full of kids from elite universities who came from upper middle income to wealthy backgrounds who rebelled against their background and everything they thought it stood for. Given that the kids family had a background in the health care business, that could explain why he was against health care business and why he targeted the UHC head like that.

As far as why he basically left himself open to being caught, it wasn’t he was stupid, it sounds more like he wanted to be caught, get the notoriety like Kascinzki did, possibly to make sure his manifesto got out there, seeing himself as a kind of martyr to the cause. He made far too many mistakes for it to be accidental. Sadly, given some of the online reactions we are seeing, it sounds like that part worked in the sense there are people trying to claim he is a hero of some sort, like threatening the person who recognized him.
Fortunately most of the people who post on social media are blowhards who won’t act in real life, but there could be real concern of copy cats (which the arrested person probably wanted to happen as well).

I disagree. The one who made the actual call should get at least half of the money.

The employee didn’t make the initial recognition and would not have made the phonecall if the customer hadn’t pointed him out. Credit and kudos to the customer for their keen eyes, IMO. Maybe the customer was just getting a second opinion and would have called but the employee made the call.

Or maybe the customer didn’t want to take responsibility so would never have made the call. We don’t know, which is why I balk at the idea of the customer being more deserving.

I can only imagine that last night brought a whole new level of awareness and suck to his life that he has not had the opportunity to experience before. There’s many more where that came from.

If the customer didn’t want to take any responsibility they didn’t have to say a word to the employee. But the customer is wise to stay out of the media. (I read it was an older adult who spotted him and told the employee.) So we may never know.
