If he stayed in places like HI New York City Hostel - HI USA (where the suspect is alleged to have stayed some of the time before) and booked sufficiently in advance, the cost of the lodging may not have been that much (you can check pricing of beds there on the linked web site).

I didn’t notice if anyone else posted this, but I noticed that the picture of the suspect at the hostel and the other picture, the nose appears quite different. Maybe it’s just the camera angle, but the first picture, the face appears almost feminine to me, the body is smaller in stature and the jacket flares out at the top as if there were breasts underneath. The second picture, the person looks bulkier, like there’s another layer underneath the jacket, and the nose is much thicker, the face more masculine.
Anyone else think this person might be a woman, or at least a man wearing a facial prosthesis?

I believe he stayed in a room at the hostel with a few roommates. Haven’t heard them posit that he might not be a he.

You would think they’d have tons of his fingerprints from that hostel, and people who could give a bit of information.

It’s a hostel, you share the room with several others, probably a hallway bathroom.

The person is reported to have checked out from the hostel for one night and then checked back in the next day. I agree that when you look at the two photos side by side the nose looks very different. Maybe two people checked in using the same name and dressed identically?
(eta it’s the bridge of the nose that looks different and that is admittedly a grainy part of the photos)

CNN is saying he went back to Port Authority and probably took another bus somewhere
I just assumed that all along. He took the bus into town, so it’s logical that he would take a bus out of town. The Port Authority has busses going in every direction, so really easy to cross the river in minutes and blend in with thousands of other younger people.
