All Bard students are required to take at least one course in each of ten “distribution” areas. These areas are: Difference & Justice; Analysis of Art; Foreign Languages and Literatures; Historical Analysis; Literary Analysis in English; Laboratory Science; Meaning, Being & Value; Mathematics & Computing; Practicing Arts; and Social Analysis. There are courses at Bard that fulfill more than one distribution. Students will also necessarily take courses for their major that will fulfill one or more distribution area (e.g., music students take lots of Practicing Arts and Analysis of Art classes).
Are the distribution requirements the same for college and conservatory music students?
Yes! Bard Conservatory’s UG music program includes both a BM in music at the Conservatory and a non-music BA at Bard College. Conservatory students complete all the requirements of the BA degree, as well as those for the Conservatory degree.
Yes, his stats are on the high end. USC might be a bit far for us, but I’ll check out the website for sure.
Not to create a tangent here, but I am aware of the double degree program. I was asking if the distribution requirements you posted are required of the college BA in music students or if they apply to the conservatory students.
The BA for conservatory students is not in music. The BA for college music majors is therefore different. I was just curious if the distribution requirements you listed were for both of if there were more requirements for the college BA music majors. I thought there might be more requirements for the college music BA.
You said the Bard NPC came in above. Sounds like a wonderful program wise but please ensure you have a few that meet your goal.
Don’t forget - direct costs are one thing. There’s also the indirect costs from books, transport, trips to NYC, eating out with friends etc.
I hope he gets in and you get the offer that works for you but I imagine, with the immense musical talent out there (professor wise and cohort wise), no matter where he ends up he’ll be able to shine.
And keep in mind that tuition and fees will increase around 4-6% each year while merit awards and scholarships stay flat, so you may want to factor that in to your budget for the total number of years.
All Bard undergraduate students (regardless of major) have to satisfy the distribution requirements.
Yes, absolutely. We have an older child in college who flies to and from school, so indirect costs is certainly a thing. And yes, we are believers in “bloom where you are planted”, so he will shine and grow anywhere!
