Music schools for students without private vocal education?

@ariannabug2027 are you also looking at BA programs in music…not just BM in vocal performance? Many BA programs do not require an audition. In some cases, however, BA students have to pay additional for their private applied studies in college.

You need to check all of the costs for all options.

Recently my parents said I could be in my school choir for my senior year.

That’s great news!

I talked to my parents and my dad said that they did not plan to move out of state until my mom’s mom died because she cannot stand to leave her behind, so I should be fine for in state tuition. I’ve been looking at SUNY Broome as well. That would be a legacy school for me. My dad’s mom went there. I will look at MCC.

Most of my auditions will be virtual, as I live far enough from them. The only ones that I may not be able to do a virtual audition for would be Ithaca, since IC is about 20-30 minutes from me.

I am actually not looking at BM performance programs at all. All of the BA programs I have looked includes private studies. I believe there are fees for it, but I am pretty sure that is for all students, not just BA students.

Hello,

This is my recommendation;

If you are in the top 10% of your class (which you are) and you score at least a 1200, you will be eligible for the SUNY Top 10% promise

https://www.suny.edu/attend/top10-promise/

Then what you wil do is look up find my major

https://www.suny.edu/attend/find-a-suny-program/undergraduate/

this way you can explore and look at the different music program to hone in you your interest.

you need to be realistic about finances. Under the new student loan guidelines (effective JUly 1) the max that your parents will be able to borrow is 65k. This will not put a dent in a private or OOS music program. It is also a non-starter conversation since you say they are not paying.

you may need to take a bottoms up approach by looking at the ASAP program at TC3

or ACE at SUNY Cortland, since they may be the two closes schools where you can commute.

As far as living at home is it because you can’t (you are endangered being there) or you do not want to (need to get away from them, dont want to live by thier rules)

Regarding SUNY and Excelsior. Excelsior will act as a last payer that can only be used for tuition. If OP gets merit at SUNY, and it covers tuition, there will be no excelsior (no double dipping).

But note from the website and this will be this student and then, since OP acknowledged others are trying to help, the $$ will be an issue no matter where they go. This is simply an admission to the university. I don’t think the student will have an issue with admission to some SUNY schools themselves - certainly Potsdam.

“Some majors may require additional steps. If the student selects one of those majors, we will inform them additional steps are required. The campus will then follow up directly with the student about those steps.”

Not to nitpick, but

is not top 10%. There’s no shame in top 15%, but the top 10% award cited won’t apply.

The 15/105 is from last year.

I will ask for a new transcript. I may end up going to Monroe CC if it will be cheaper. It will all depend on how their credits will transfer.

Neither of these programs will work, as they do not have music programs. I am looking at SUNY Broome, a legacy school, and Monroe CC, which was suggested by @aquapt . I may be able to transfer to SUNY Bing or another SUNY school. Is there a SUNY four-year near Rochester that has a music program? Thank you for your help.

It will be cheaper to go to Potsdam for four years:55,428, than MCC to Potsdam: 59,577. Those are estimates. Now, it is cheaper to go to MCC then Geneseo, but not cheaper than going to Potsdam all four years: 61,109. Again, estimates.

The closest SUNY with a full music program is Geneseo (their music BA has a performance track). It’s about half an hour south of Rochester. They have a new Honors Pathway program, and Monroe CC is one of the 5 participating feeder schools. https://www.geneseo.edu/news/suny-geneseo-offers-honors-pathway-for-community-college-students/

The closest conservatory-level SUNY program is at SUNY Buffalo, which offers both a BMus and a BA. That’s a little over an hour west of Rochester.

The absolute-closest 4-year SUNY to Rochester is Brockport, but their music program doesn’t offer a full major, just minors.

Check the articulation agreements at Monroe CC. Since CUNY and SUNY operate under the one university system if you compete your associates you will be able to have a clean transfer to a 4 year SUNY

Is Brockport near you ?

Are you EOP eligible

It is only about 1,000 dollars more than going to Potsdam for 4 yrs to go to MCC then Fredonia. Going to MCC then Oswego would be cheapest at 44,133.

Brockport does not have a music program.

Interesting! Well, as I said, definitely apply to 4-year schools, including Potsdam and even privates that give generous merit. You’ll see once you’re accepted, whether your first-year costs align with the estimates. You might end up with scholarships that the estimates didn’t predict at some schools, and costs could come in a bit higher than expected at others. When you’re merit-hunting, you have to cast a relatively wide net and see what happens. MCC has scholarships too, including some for music specifically.
