Translation: that would be about 3-4 mph brisk walk. I have no idea about music, but I hope that idad or sewhappy can post some recommendations since they like to listen to music while walking (see the Exercise thread).

I walk every day at the same pace. I have a few faves: Mozart piano sonatas, Beethoven Piano Concerto #5, Beach Boys Greatest Hits, Queen Greatest Hits, Bach Brandenburgs, Little Shop of Horrors. I used to walk without music, but the Ipod changed my life. My favorite 90 minutes of the day!

I do Pandora on my phone. It’s a free ap but takes a data plan. You plug in a song you like and it finds music similar to it and just keeps playing. Or they have pre-loaded play list for exercise or decades or whatever. It’s easy to switch to a new type of music and I have my phone with me for the walk as well (music just goes on hold for a phone call)

If you want the beat of the music to match your foot strike you need to consider turnover rate, not mph. (Someone with a longer stride will take fewer steps per mile.) You can pick a couple of songs that are a good speed for you and count how many beats there are in a minute. Then go to a website like this–HugeDomains.com; and do a search for songs that are the same bpm (beats per minute). If you want to push your pace a little look for songs that are a little faster.

How about “500 Miles” by the Proclaimers–it’s upbeat, and thematically appropriate.

Here’s some I’m currently using for running/walking: Uprising by Muse, Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles, I’m Shipping Up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys, Pump It by Black Eyed Peas, Would I Lie to You by The Eurythmics, Poker Face by Lady GaGa, Greenback Boogie by Ima Robot, Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare by Matt & Kim.

I got more, lol, how much time do you have?

You’ve got to give us a little help on what kind of music YOU like! Or, what you DON’T like!!! Oldies? Country? Current pop?

I personally need faster upbeat music for my walking. No slow ballads, no instrumental. Some favs include Michael Jackson, Coldplay, Kate Perry, B52’s, Annie Lennox, Earth Wind and Fire, Pink, The Supremes, U2…

I was just going to start a music thread- cause I rejoined the gym yesterday & I don’t remember what playlists I used to use!

( I also have to get a holster/case, because my iPhone keeps changing songs on me when it is stuck in my bra)

Emerald, mine used to do that too - my D showed me a way to play the music differently that took care of the problem…some adjustment on the Ipod…but I can’t remember exactly what she did!!! It was driving me crazy!!

I’ve Just Seen a Face by the Beatles–I’ve used that song to walk since I was in 9th grade. And I’ve passed it down to my Ds.

As for your iPod, go to Settings/Music and make sure that you turn off the “Shake to Shuffle” item. Obviously, there’s a whole lot of shaking going on in your bra…

Pandora is great - I like setting the station to The Kinks for classic rock, Rock Around the Clock for 50’s/60s fast stuff, and Sonata Arctica for metal, and Hank Williams III for fast paced country. :)

My W walks 5km (3miles) each morning then 10KM (6miles) each evening as well as going to curves 3 times a week. She found out where they get the music and has downloaded 2 cd’s and bought the third. They are great because they all have fixed speeds to them and she finds them great for walking. Go to a site called Dynamix music look up forever ABBA (that one she ordered) then on left click on downloads and she downloaded Broadway dance remixes and Fun Dance volume 2. It gives her about 3 hours of fast walking music. and with the rhythms you cant help but keep the beat walking.

Walking on a treadmill, you mean.
In the street or on a path you shouldn’t be plugged in but aware of your environment and surroundings.

I walk miles everyday outside but listen to talk radio rather than music - it’s more interesting. I’m still quite aware of my surroundings - especially the people doing a right turn on red, looking only to the left rather than in front of them, trying to run me down.

My W uses a single ear stereo ear bud. It is really neat because it is full stereo but in one ear bud instead of 2 that way one ear is always open. I could give you the web site for those as well if you want it.

One advantage to the talk radio is that I don’t listen to it at a high volume like I probably would music so it’s easier to hear what’s going on around me including hearing my phone ring.

My musical taste is so off-the-wall that you probably would go schizo with my music. I’m likely to go from Dwight Yoakam to Parliament Funkadelic to White Stripes to Little Feat on a walk.

However, I’ll give you one that always gets me pushing a little harder up the steep hills I walk. It’s a 2005 remake by a British techno band of a 1973 Rod Stewart/Faces boogie woogie song. I keep turning it up louder and louder and walking faster and faster:

I have all the songs in iTunes rated from 1-star to 5 star. For my walking, I have a playlist that randomly shuffles among all the 5-star songs that I haven’t heard in six months. So, I get a very eclectic mix of very good songs. The suprises that pop up are one of the real pleasures of my walks.

^What I did was make a playlist on my nano of all the fast temp songs - if I don’t listen to Pandora that’s what I listen to when I’m exercising. One advantage of Pandora is that since it’s on my phone if the phone rings I hear it through the ear buds.
