I’ll send you a private message…
Just curious- is anyone else in this group appealing their financial aid package before committing to their school?
Not personally, but I definitely know of people who are.
Hi wonderful MT forum! Informal poll here: which would you choose?
- NYU Tisch BFA MT (NSB) for $100K+/year
Or
- Elon University BFA MT for $55K/year
I’m curious what everyone thinks? Thx
Not sure my opinion is worth anything. But if she loved her visit to Elon, seems like a winner to me. Can’t honestly say how overrated the “connections” you make going to school in NYC may be. But Elon has been pretty successful in recent years, getting kids on big stages, from what I can tell.
My son got into NYU Tisch New Studio on Broadway (he said he wanted to be considered for only the MT studio), but he still didn’t love the size of each studio compared to some of the other schools he was accepted to. Same thing with BOCO, for him.
If you’ll cover everything financially, without difficulty, then maybe NYU could also be the right choice. If you think gen ed classes and academic rigor is something your child would crave, then also NYU checks your box. But leaving undergrad studies with significant loans and entering a field that just barely seems to pay the bills might not be wise.
Our boy chose TXST (no tuition for MT kids) over NYU because he wanted the small class size, and TXST can clearly get him where he wants to go. And when he’s 22 and trying to “make it”, he also knows that mom and dad will be better able to help out then, having not spent an extra $300K over four years. Just thinking our support doesn’t end when these four years do.
Anyhoo, my amateur take. Either way, she’s in a good spot!
Such different schools and environments. Assuming financials aren’t a huge factor, what does your kid’s gut tell them?
If your daughter wants to go to NYU(NSB), Beg, Borrow, Steal I would vote for NYU. She gets only one chance to experience New York City and one of the top Ranked programs.
Leaning towards Elon, but the siren’s song of NYU is strong,
AWESOME response. Thank you ![]()
Agreed. TY
I echo everything COYG_MT has said! I guess what you need to ask yourself is if the price difference between the two is actually indicative of a difference in value of education/experience.
I can say that when I asked my daughter’s MTCA coach which programs are truly rigorous in training and most likely to open connections to a career in performing, he shortlisted seven schools - NYU didn’t make that list but Elon did.
So if the draw is living in NYC, she has so much time to do that. BFA programs are insanely intense, with very little time for outside pursuits. When S21 was touring he was told that it is like D1 athletics, and they were not wrong. Being at an institution where she can concentrate on her academics and performances is actually a benefit rather than looking to be a New Yorker! If she loved Elon and it is half the price, save the money to get her set up in NY or LA after graduation, she will likely need support for many years esp in those high COL places (S21 is planning on getting a full time arts admin job and will still need help to live in NYC even with room mates so we are thrilled that he chose UNCSA over NYU)
Did you find out that she’ll be in the MT studio? As we’ve discussed, the studio placement post commitment was my biggest frustration about NYU
Out of curiosity, which 7 schools did your MTCA coach feel are most rigorous and have the most connections? My daughter is a transfer applicant and those 2 things are what she’s looking for most.
Shenandoah
Texas State
Montclair
Pace
UMich
CCM
Elon
Obviously there are many other great schools, but these are several he highlighted as being “on serious tracks records of success in this regard.”
Thank you for sharing!
No problem! Is your daughter in the process of choosing her transfer school right now?
Yes, she is. She wants to be in NYC so right now she’s leaning towards Manhattan School of Music. She has her NYU audition this Friday. I heard transfers don’t find out their NYU decision until June so we will have some waiting to do for that one.
Still TBD. She’s still leaning 95% towards Elon, but not quite ready to officially decline NYU for that very reason. I’m ready to pull the plug on NYU, but we shall see.
