Musical Theater College Admission 2025

This sounds like an incredible experience for kids!

I would also like to add that it’s definitely not necessary to attend a summer camp - the cost for a lot of them can be prohibitive, so don’t feel bad if you can’t swing it. My daughter didn’t attend one, nor did she engage in a bunch of masterclasses, and she had success in the college audition process.

Most definitely! I also should have emphasized they have a great scholarship program – the best we’ve seen.

That’s so great!

I see a lot of concern about getting into summer programs, and there’s often a sort of vibe surrounding it that suggests it’s necessary for college audition success. My point is that it’s nice if you can and want to do it, but not necessary.

Its a great program from what I hear due to the head being the former head of UofA when they had their successful program. Definitely worth the visit

Thank you to the board/thread contributors for all of your input, encouragement and support. I pray for the best outcomes for all of your kiddos, and that the Universe will spin their way, in MT and beyond. Godspeed!

Good luck to your daughter! My son has acquaintances/friends who are current juniors at both nyu and Elon. Either choice will be great I’m sure!

We tried. My husband just got fired with all of the NIOSH firings and one school gave nothing and one school gave $5,000. Big whoop. But these were top top schools so they don’t have to try to get students

I’m sorry to hear about this. I think you’re talking about NYU and Syracuse? I guess the big question is: Does she have acceptances and scholarships to other schools?
For what it’s worth, NYU is a meets need only school. I’ve heard that they sometimes give scholarships, but they are certainly not very transparent about this.
Syracuse is also seems to not be very forthcoming with scholarships, although my daughter’s classmate (a boy; I think this matters) did get $25000. My daughter (and her other classmate, a girl) got nothing with their MT offers. Syracuse was the only school out of 9 acceptances that offered her nothing. Thankfully she didn’t like the vibe, so it wasn’t a contender for her anyway.
There really are a lot of great programs, so hopefully you have some other options that’ll work.

My daughter is having the hardest time deciding between 2 schools - BoCo at Berklee (BFA MT) and Mason Gross Rutgers (BFA Acting). Visited both, loved both. Obviously 2 very different programs/campuses. Scholarships at both, but Rutgers, in the end, will cost less. Anyone have input on or experience with either program?

I think it depends on her end goals and what she wants to be doing in a program. The MT program will integrate voice and dance, and the acting program, unless taken as electives, probably won’t. Where does her strength lie?

If voice and dance are important, give the Rutgers schedule a hard look to see if there is room or time in it to take those classes as electives. Some of these BFA programs are so tightly scheduled it might not be possible. Some students address this by going to outside voice teachers and dance studios, so it’s solvable, but again you’ve got to weigh access, time and additional costs. The screen acting training at Rutgers is a super nice supplement to the theater curriculum.

Yes this is exactly what we are worried about with Rutgers. The acting program is intense and she wouldn’t have much time to pursue music, which she adores. We compared the programs, BoCo does have a screen acting elective, but perhaps it is not as in depth.

Which is her dream: MT or acting?
How does she feel about the different campuses?
How does she feel about the vibe of each program after visiting?
Is there a significant net cost difference between the two programs?
Everyone’s list of important factors will of course be different, but these are things I’d be delving into to help narrow things down.

Anyone know of any movement on the Shenandoah and Indiana waitlist for MT?

I think it would be easier to supplement with screen acting training post-graduation than to make up all the vocal/dance training she’d get at BoCo. Plus, with all the universities in Boston, it seems like there’d be ample opportunity to grab opportunities to be in student films to build a reel. In choosing, my kid liked to think about 1-10 scales. She didn’t think all the training in the world would move her from a 5-6 to a 10 as a singer/dancer but she thought she’d get from 7-8 to 10 as an actor with the right training.

I’ve heard there has been a little bit, but it’s all friend of a friend type knowledge, so not sure how much that overlaps lol.

From Shenandoah or Indiana? I do not believe they let people off the waitlist yet for Shenandoah.
