My son may want to transfer out of Columbia University--school ideas?

Hi.
So, my son is a sophomore at Columbia, and is considering transferring. He might take a gap year next year, so probably would be applying for fall 2026 or Spring 2026 for schools that offer that option.

He really enjoys his classes and teachers, is a writer for the student newspaper, and does love NYC but it’s all getting to be too much with the constant police presence on campus, the protests (which he supports, but they’re constant), the locking of the gates, the ongoing threats and funding cuts from the trump administration. Last year, he was shoved by a cop in riot gear while going to class, and also was outside the building in which cops fired shots. He feels like the administration does not have the best interests of the students as their priority, and doesn’t feel safe (primarily emotionally and I guess “psychically” safe, but also the frequent presence of cops affects him too). He’s a sensitive guy, queer, an artist, writer and actor, and has always dreamed of attending Columbia.

Last year was manageable but he thought this year would be better. But it’s not. And with trump in office for another 2 years he just feels the vibe on campus isn’t going to improve. He thinks going to a school that isn’t as much of a target, and isn’t in the biggest city in the country, would be better. He recognizes that all liberal arts colleges are being targeted now, but feels Columbia is getting affected the most. He also thinks that if he takes a gap year, it might be more clear which schools are managing everything better than others.

He is an English major, with a focus on writing, but also loves fashion, theater, design and art. So first thought was Brown. Is there anyone at Brown who can speak to the energy on campus now? Is it more student-centered than Columbia? Another school he’s looking at is Wesleyan. I love Williams for him, but it’s probably TOO isolated. His brother went to Bard and loved it, so that’s also an option although tbh he probably wants something more “prestigious”. He’s gotten straight A’s at Columbia and has teachers who would be happy to write him a recommendation.

So schools that he is considering are (not in any order)
Brown
Wesleyan
Swarthmore
Amherst
Pomona??
Middlebury
Princeton (transfer rate is miniscule)
Oberlin
Ohio

Thoughts on these for him? any other ideas. TYSM

Writing - just as a more likely - Sewanee and Emory is well known.

He could potentially be giving up the ‘name’.

Marist would be safe but strong in fashion.

His list is fine but maybe too top heavy?

English is strong most places.

Reed and Clark may be too others. And Pitzer as a safe valve to Pomona.

If finances are an issue, you need to check NPCs.

Good luck.

WashU has made it well known that they will accept transfers from universities affected by protests.

Might he consider doing junior year abroad or at a partner US school and then returning to Columbia senior year?

Sorry this is happening.

Of the Top X names, WashU with its 8300 undergrads may be one of the best options. It’s the only one with a major in fashion/apparel design in College Navigator (along with specialty courses in various visual arts, drama, etc).

The other names I’m going to mention won’t have the prestige that he’s hoping for, but would have good breadth and depth in a variety of areas of interest and would be very likely admits:

  • Drexel (PA ): About 14k undergrads
  • Indiana U.: About 37k undergrads
  • Syracuse (NY): About 16k undergrads
  • U. of Cincinnati (OH): About 31k undergrads
  • Virginia Commonwealth: About 21k undergrads

ETA:
Perhaps Cornell (about 16k undergrads)? In the College of Human Centered Design it does offer majors in Fashion Design, Fashion Design Management, Fiber Science, while the College of Architecture Art Planning has a variety of offerings, and in the College of Arts & Sciences English and Performing & Media Arts. Additionally, students are allowed to cross-register for classes at Ithaca, which could expand options (and which could be an alternative sure thing acceptance-wise for him).

ETA2:

Not as reachy as most on his list, but not sure things, has he considered Macalester (about 2100 undergrads in MN) or Connecticut College (about 2k undergrads)? I don’t think either have any kind of fashion major, but I think the vibe might be right and they offer the other areas of interest. ETA3: And Skidmore (about 2800 undergrads in NY).

Macalester

Also appears to focus on non-traditional students for transfer intake.

No advice. But I am so sorry your kid is experiencing this and needs to transfer.

Was going to suggest the same, a year abroad might fit the bill.

Reid Hall (the Columbia program) is in Paris and it’s humanities-oriented. Or AUP in Paris may also have some yearlong humanities programs. My D is currently at SciencesPo in Paris through Columbia, but it’s more PoliSci focused.

In London, Columbia definitely has a reciprocal agreement with Goldsmith’s which is a super cool environment (very artsy and creative and fashion-y, kinda like the New School/Parsons) and you could also look into Central St. Martin’s for more design focus.

The OP wrote that her son supported the protests, not that her child was a target of them. In other words, he’s on the side of the protesters, just tired of the hoopla. Wash U. opened its doors to students who were targeted by the protesters–in other words, mainly Jewish and pro-Israel students.

Read your post a couple of times and am trying to imagine a campus that wouldn’t feel insular/isolated for a kid into theater/art/fashion. I think it would be good for him to go visit a few of these places and imagine what it might be like to leave New York.

I think the idea of a gap year makes a lot of sense, especially if he has something defined that he wants to do. Going abroad for a year is also a compelling option if it’s not too late to arrange.

Were there other schools that he applied to and got into, or did he get into Columbia ED? I think I remember hearing that schools tend not to accept you as a transfer if they rejected you the first time. But a school that liked him once might like him again.

Of the places you listed, Swarthmore jumped out due to its proximity to Philly (I don’t think any city really compares to NYC for theater and art but Philly has a lot going for it and you’re still a train ride away from New York.)

Is Yale an impossible transfer?
What about University of Chicago? or even Penn?
I think UCLA could be great and LA has a lot going on but it might also have some of the same challenges that Columbia is contending with.

I didn’t read from your initial post that your son was actually interested in majoring in fashion – just that he’s interested in it – am I correct?

I think you have a great list - especially Brown, Wesleyan, and Amherst. Thinking outside the box, I’d add McGill to your list. Academic excellence. Its English Dept offers a unique program encompassing English literature, drama, and cultural studies. Very diverse, high energy campus with students from all over the world. Big, vibrant city. Get totally away from the Trump think but still close enough to get home by train or a short flight. In the same time zone as family.

I don’t have any advice—I just wanted to comment to say that it’s got to be so disappointing that the school your son has always dreamed of hasn’t panned out due to circumstances well beyond his control. He sounds like a super thoughtful and talented person. I hope he has a better experience wherever he lands next (or on his gap year, which sounds wonderful, too)!

Hi! I have a son who sounds so much like yours! I’d feel confident placing a bet that they’d be friends. My son is majoring in Fashion Design at WashU and LOVES it. He’s someone who loves NYC, art, writing, design etc–many of the same things your son does. Feel free to DM me. My son very intentionally chose not to go to school in NYC because he’ll move there right after graduation and (he says) live there his whole life (can’t blame him!). We looked at Cornell, but be aware that the fashion / design program at the College of Human Ecology there is nothing like what a fashion program at an art school is. Just go to an in-person info session. You’ll be surrounded by…definitely NOT art students. Brown / RISD would be amazing. As for writing and English majors, it depends what he wants to do with that. I also agree with another poster that maybe a year abroad could help? But I also hear your son about his reasons for considering a transfer. I’m in that neighborhood often and have observed that it must be rather difficult to be a young student there at times in recent years.

Good to know and thank you for the clarification. My son IS Jewish, but is 100% on the side of the protesters. It’s simply that because Columbia is located in NYC the riot cops presence have affected his ability to feel safe and the ongoing administrative capitulation to trump have changed how he views the college as a whole.

Yes! I thought of this last night. Most of the deadlines for the year long programs abroad have sadly passed, but he could apply for the spring semester. Also, the Kyoto Consortium program’s deadline is in 10 days–he is studying Japanese along with his major and has the pre-reqs to go there. He’s visited Japan twice and really loves it, so this might be a way for him to get some peace for a year and hopefully things will be better in 2026. He’s considering it but would have to move fast.

Conn College? Artsy vibe, strong humanities, sits high on a hill so a bit apart from what’s happening in the world at large. Kids who like Brown usually like it. Amherst- may be too rural for his taste, but a lot going on in the area due to the concentration of college students, arts scene, etc.

do you have a link to the Goldsmith progrm? sounds right up his alley!

what is AUP? And do you have a link to the Goldsmiths program (sorry if this reply appears twice)

Yale is pretty tough I think to transfer. I attended there, not sure that would help. He did get into Columbia ED so no other schools received an application. UChicago might be a good fit.
And no, i dont think he wants to major in fashion or design or art, but as an artistic soul, he’d like to incorporate some classes or at least get exposure in some way.
