My son may want to transfer out of Columbia University--school ideas?

do you know what the finaid situation is like at McGill for an American student? Right now, he gets a TON of need-based aid, as well as the Pell Grant, which I’m pretty sure is not available when attending Canadian institutions. Thank you!

what’s the political leaning of students at WashU? I do think it’s going to be hard for him to give up on the “prestige” of Columbia, although maybe not. He’s grown a lot as a person in the last 2 years, and I think he’s beginning to realize that if you plan to be a creator in some way (writing, art, theater) the name of the institution isn’t as important as the learning and professor relationships that you cultivate.

My D goes to Barnard which I guess administers the Goldsmiths exchange -

I’m guessing he has access to those programs? If not he can probably go through a process to apply directly to Goldsmith’s with pre approval from Columbia.

Can he look at programs through other schools?

For example, my daughter goes to school in South Carolina but did a program through U of Nebraska and Dankook U in Korea this summer - they each taught one class.

Some may still have year long programs open that you can get into - if Columbia approves the transcripts of course.

This will be tough at a lot of schools - who may meet need but not for transfers, etc. or simply aren’t as generous as Columbia.

You might look at the list of schools that meet need - and run the NPCs as a transfer.

That might be more important that - keeping prestige, etc. - because a prestigious school that’s unaffordable is a rejection, even if you get in.

i think most ivy leagues don’t accept credits from other universities–at least that was the case when i was a student 30 years ago! I wanted to attend Berkeley for a semester but Yale said no credits would be accepted. they want that money!

The Kyoto options sounds to me like it may be worth quick action.

yes! given that he’s been there twice, is studying japanese, and the deadline hasn’t passed like most of the other programs, he’s strongly considering it. he will be speaking to his advisor today.

Brown & Northwestern University might be of interest to your son. Northwestern’s financial aid is very generous after it was among a group of super-elite schools (about 17 or 18 top 25 universities) sued for coordinating financial aid practices.

Northwestern University is strong in many areas including Journalism, Theatre/Acting, writing, and several other disciplines. Divided into 6 undergraduate schools including top rated SESP & Medill, it is very easy to double or triple major if one so desires. (However, not sure about LGBTQ life, but suspect that it is, of course, a total non-issue and Chicago is easily accessed.

While I agree with you that NU would be a good match academically for this student’s interests, they are squarely in the crosshairs of the current administration. If this student is looking to get away from targeted universities, I sadly don’t think Northwestern is a good choice.

It isn’t much of an issue any longer. NU has a lot of Jewish students and an active Hillel so OP should check-out the situation with these resources.

Also, the situation at Columbia University is extreme and not likely found elsewhere.

OP - I’d encourage your son to read the student newspapers at all the schools he’s considering for transfer, and also a google search on national news about those schools.

I love the idea that @momofboiler1 mentioned regarding a deep-dive into the school newspapers of your child’s transfer list.

Couple of quick things. You wrote Ohio at the bottom of the transfer list. Did you mean Ohio State or Ohio University? I can tell you that the political climate in Athens is very, very quiet (relatively speaking) as of now.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, doesn’t Columbia have a relationship with Trinity College in Ireland? I know there’s a “2-and-2” arrangement there. Might be worth including Trinity on the list if other transfer options fail to crystalize.

will he take the sat

I don’t believe that’s relevant to a junior transfer. It’s a hs test.

most schools still require it to transfer with a few exceptions

This student is a transfer junior student. While Princeton requires the SAT or ACT for current applicants, they did not two years ago.

The ACT and SAT are NOT designed to be taken by students who have completed two years of college.

The applicant could call colleges and ask…to see, but I seriously doubt they expect a college sophomore to take the SAT. Plus…the student would have to find a HS site that would allow him to take the test.

Could you please post a reference for this?

OP, my queer, Jewish child, who is very supportive of the protest movement but not personally an activist, loves Wesleyan. The president has been pretty open about his resistance to Trump’s repressive impulses, so I guess it could end up a target, but so far it has not been.

WashU sounds like it could be a good fit in a lot of ways, but I would be really careful about sending my queer kid to a school in a deep red state like Missouri. Even if the school and city are hospitable to LGBTQ+ people, the state government is not; it is actively hostile and asserting more control over blue cities, e.g.: Missouri controls Kansas City Police. Now Republicans want the same for St. Louis | KCUR - Kansas City news and NPR

Given what your child wants to escape from at Columbia, I’m not sure WashU would provide the respite he’s seeking.
