Thanks, @suzyQ7 . That seems harsh to me. Ugh.
Yeah, tell me about it.
@dowzerw the good news is that with a 217 as a sophomore she stands an excellent chance of raising that just with another year of school under her belt. And by then youāll know what the cut-off is for this year so sheāll have something to shoot for.
Good luck to her!
(and anyway if she attended school in her home state sheād still be facing a pretty steep cut-off relative to the rest of the country )
Thanks, @Mamelot! I hope soā¦she sure works hard.
@Mamelot Did you visit University of Central Florida? What did you think? Weāre going for a campus visit next Wednesday. (Monday, weāre going to the University of Florida.)
@VABogart yes we visited two weekends ago so Iāll pm you about it. Had a great time in Orlando!
@Mamelot Thanks for your response ā very helpful, and an encouragement. My S likely would need some sort of scholarship to go to UCF (engineering school). I think Virginia Tech and Texas A&M are still high on his list, but UCF would definitely come into play if the price is right. S also wants to live in FL when he gets out of college.
Glad to hear you enjoyed WDW ā weāll be headed there as well. All the best to your D2.
I think you will find that if S has the stats for UF he will get some money from UCF, especially if OOS. If he has UF stats then check out the Burnett Honors College at UCF, you wonāt see dorms like that at UF! And of course UCF loves NMFs.
While UCF will be easier to get an acceptance, the Engineering programs are quite rigorous and the graduates are very much in demand in the central Florida region. The company I work for will be bringing in some UCF engineering interns this summer.
My D and I will be visiting UF for the second time on the 21st. UCF is my Dās safety since they offer auto-admit to top 10% in-state students. Not a good match for her major though.
@CaucAsianDad Thanks for this information. We are Virginia residents, but S is interested in colleges not only in Virginia (Virginia Tech and University of Virginia) but Texas and Florida as well. S is interviewing with the head of the Burnett Honors College next week. Nice to see that if S doesnāt make NMF (he has an SI 218 but that may just miss the VA cutoff), UCF may still provide scholarship opportunities. Heās interested in mechanical/aerospace engineering, so hopefully he could find one or more internships in the Orlando area if he were to attend UCF.
All the best on your visit to UF. I hear itās a terrific place. BTW ā what is your Dās major?
@VABoart
My D wants to major in Psychology and pursue a Ph. D then teach and research at the university level (That is a long shot, but she has the personally type stick with it and make it happen so I will support her). I hear UCF has the largest Psychology department in the western hemisphere, but UF offers a better path to a top graduate school, so it is her first choice.
My D is a point or two under the NMSF cut-off predictions for Florida. But I am holding out hope that as a whole Floridaās math scores will be down and the cut-off will be closer to the 211 (class of 2015 cut-off) and 214 (2016).
@CaucAsianDad Thanks for your very helpful e-mail message. Weāll give a report of our trip to FL and UCF when we get back. If S takes a shine to UCF, would love to follow up with you. Thanks.
uggghā¦finding out some scores higher than mine, but will be interested in hearing in fall. Anyone have guesses for Indiana?
@kikidee9 Here are the predictions of three prognosticators for Indianaās PSAT cutoff:
Testmasters 214
Prepscholar 215
Compass 214
Compass also gives a range of 211-216 as possible cutoff scores for Indiana. Hope this helps. All the best to you!
Iām from Washington and I got a 209, which is pretty far below my stateās cuttoff last year (I didnāt study or do any practice so itās not a huge deal to me though).
Even so, I am recieving letters from several schools that say my standardized test scores may be high enough to qualify for NM. Does this mean I may be commended or something? Iām unsure of how the system works haha.
@VABogart do you think it will be higher than 216 with all the data? It has never beenā¦but I am a little nervous. I have a 216~
Does anyone have any predictions about the NMSF qualifying score in MS? I have a 213 and just want to get all of this stressing over with.
Itās MARCH and the revised CB concordance tables arenāt even out until May. The March DAT scores arenāt even available yet. The CB, not Testmasters Prepmaster Compass, has the REAL data.
How long can a comatose horse be beaten?
Until September, 2016
@kikidee9 Well, no one knows for sure, but 216 for Indiana certainly looks pretty good. I think weāre all a little nervous since this board seems to be populated with those whose scores are right on or near the dividing line. The Commended Score (comes out in April?) may provide a clue on cutoff scores or at least ranges.
@GMTplus7 I agree with you that CB has the real data. The question then becomes, why canāt CB put out accurate charts based on the data? The charts clearly are off ā way off, in fact, at the 99 percentile levels. Not exactly a great confidence builder. On that basis, itās not unreasonable to look at what others are predicting, especially as some of those predictions are based on a sampling collection of actual (regional) scores.
FWIW ā @VABogart & @GMTplus7 others ā CB says "Since the redesigned PSAT/NMSQT is different from the previous test, numerical scores on the two tests are not equivalent. Concordance tables help educators understand how pre-2015 and redesigned PSAT/NMSQT scores relate to each other.
Preliminary concordance tables are available now. Look for final tables in May 2016."
The commended cutoff might come out soon. State reports apparently will be later - not sure when ā in the past they got released by March. It is too bad CB is operating this way.
