National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

@suzyQ7 Absolutely. We are talking about different possibilities – min and max wrong.

Well,in a short six months we will have all the answers.

But for the student (say in NJ) that has 2x on the Oct 14th PSAT, and doesn’t make NMF, it sucks. And its unfair. Because of that I don’t think the cutoff will be higher than 222. Unfortunately, my child is sitting on a 221, and that may not make it for the highest cutoff states.

My S had a 36,36,38.Aced the math section,to end up with a 1480,220si.He said some of the questions,I would assume the ones he missed, lol, were poorly worded or ambiguous I am guessing,Either way, proud of his accomplishment,he didn’t really study much or practice at all.He thinks he did at least equally well on the march SAT.On the old SAT he had a 780 on the critical reading portion so this test has definitely changed some things.

@snicks1234 - My S has same scores in CA. I think some of the reading passages caused damage to lot of kids. I am still thinking that 220 should be enough in CA.

@Frankmeister So you are 100% certain that 209 is commended, correct? It’s too late for me to call and I want to be doubly sure before I tell my daughter. That means she is commended but won’t go further, which is what we expected after reading this thread. I was still holding out a sliver of hope that commended would come in on the low end which still left a chance for us in FL. Oh well. The reality of her not studying for the PSAT hits. My advice to those of you with younger students. Get your kids to study before their Junior year, especially their old math if they are already in Calculus. That is what hurt my dd. She went from a 170 on the old test in 10th to 210 on the new test in 11th without studying but could have probably improved enough for NMSF if she had just put in the effort to review. Good luck to those on the bubble. The NM program is helpful, even though very stressful while waiting. My oldest has full tuition and full room and board from her NMF.

Just to further illustrate - 3 wrong in language last year (and perfect scores on the other 2 sections) resulted in an SI of 230 (out of 240). This is 5 Full Points HIGHER than the highest cutoff. 2 Wrong on the October 14 Writing section this year (and perfect scores on the other 2 sections) gives you a 222 (out of 228). A 223 cutoff in NJ would be grossly UNFAIR and inconsistent with prior years.

Agree @suzyQ7 – that seems unlikely – and Testmasters is predicting a 5 point drop for NJ - 225 to 22 and PrepScholar is predicting a 222 for NJ - not sure why but seems high!!.

@suzyQ7 To clarify, -2 on the October 14 “Writing and Language” was 36/38 and assuming perfect scores in the other two sections, would have resulted in an index of 224/228. Still surprising but not as extreme. Those two questions personally destroyed my semifinalist chances (218 in CA).

You are right… Typo there: 3x in language on Oct 14 =222 not 2x.

well,at least with commended known the nmsf projections can be redone by testmasters, etc.

@Frankmeister when you say letters were sent out, you mean to the schools right? Is there a way for us to know?

209 commended is consistent with the concordance tables, therefore I would not expect the state cut off predictions to change very much.

@zeeke007 Please explain how 209 is consistent with the concordance tables. And when you say scores won’t change much, do you mean from last year?

Is the Commended score of 209 equal to the 96th or 97th percentile? If it’s 97th, an SI of 218 might still have a (long)shot in Virginia. But if SI 209 is 96th percentile, I think S is out of the running. Thanks.

The old commended score of 202 corresponds to around 209 on the concordance table. That table is where prep scholar etc…are getting the state cut off numbers. I suspect those numbers won’t change much unless the concordance table changes with updated data.

I know the general wisdom is that commended status gets you precious little in the game of college admissions, but does anybody know if any colleges or universities actually track the number of “commended” students? Most of them track the semi-finalists, but what about the commended group?

@zeeke007 – you stated " The old commended score of 202 corresponds to around 209 on the concordance table. That table is where prep scholar etc…are getting the state cut off numbers."

Some of us could not clearly find SI year to year concordance clearly and the subparts did not seem to add up to a consistent, specific SI outcome.

@CA1543 , I am using the concordance graph provided by the college board.

hey,@Zeeke007! Hope you are right.
