Yikes, starting to worry about 225 SI not being a safe score in Texas. Definitely depending on National Merit scholarship money to fund my college education in large measure.
@nutmeg_shippy Testmasters and Compass are indicating that your worries are unfounded. Both predict TX to be at 219 (give or take a point). Also, Testmasters used a sample of 10,000 new PSAT scores to derive its 219 projection:
Note from the chart the number of juniors who scored 226 or higher and youâll see that itâs not realistic to assume a cutoff that high for TX (or anywhere else, for that matter).
Congratulations â SI 225 is an amazing score! You can smile easy. ![]()
@VABogart
Ahh I hadnât seen that chart before. Thanks for the link and encouraging words. Looking forward to September!
Ouch! That concordance is harsh!
Hope everyone is having a good summer. Off topic but wondered if anyone noticed the SAT converter for the old and new tests on the CB site. I was on it this weekend as D checking AP results and tried it out and then noticed that it has an ACT converter/concordance as well. When I plugged in Dâs old SAT scores (2150) it came out with a 34 ACT composite score which seemed too good to be true: a 34 ACT is top 1% and a 2150 is around top 3%.) Most of other conversion scales I have seen would have her score 1-2 composite points less. And since D is planning on taking the ACT in September I am wondering whether itâs worth it. Wondering if anyone else had thoughts on thisâŠ
Have HS principals notified students that they have achieved âcommendedâ status? My daughterâs SI is above 209, but we have not heard anything from her school. I guess I can still assume that she is a commended student, but I was wondering about the notification process. Thanks!
Our school stopped notifying students in April a few years back. Now they wait for the official semi-finalist or commended notification. This will happen in September. Semi-finalist notification is in early September, and Commended student notification comes after the official SF press release. If your score is at or above the 209 cut, and you arenât notified of SF, you can assume commendation. It will come a bit later.
Thank you! I assumed the notification came in September, but it seems like some students have heard unofficially from their principals. Itâs nice to know that she will eventually receive the recognition.
@Pickmen at #4964:
34 might be a bit high. Using that new score converter my D3âs new 1500 converts to an old 2170 and a 33 ACT. However, using the well-known historical conversion table for old SAT and ACT, a 2170 results in a 32, not a 33. That older table was created jointly by ACT and CB so is going to be more reliable than the new converter. Itâs certainly going to be more familiar to adcoms.
The new converter is, of course, the only tool available for converting new SAT to old (and vice versa) and converting new SAT to ACT. But I wouldnât use it for anything beyond that.
Our school is the same in not notifying the kids until September when they either proceed or donât proceed through the process. I believe that is also the time that the kids who are commended are given a certificate stating commended at our school.
Did any homeschooler get a letter about the commended cutoff? When I mentioned the 209 to our HS they told me they were never notified of anything official from CB.
@flatKansas Yes, I received the letter and 209 was mentioned.
@shuttlebus Thanks! I tried searching to see if anyone had said so, but hard to find in so many posts on the topic
That was our schoolâs vague reason for not telling commended students - that the school didnât know.
Dâs school invited kids to a quick meeting before school let out and told them they were at least Commended and still in the running for SF. I guess itâs up to the school. Ready for September!
The school should have gotten a letter in April, asking for confirmation of qualifying studentsâ status. Fortunately I think itâs in the âlet us know if something is wrongâ format. Once you know your stateâs cut, and where your kid falls, feel free to gently nudge your school. In lower performing schools, these papers tend to be low priority and are easily misplaced. Even though my sonâs school did appear to care, they still managed to lose his official finalist certificate.
Is anyone having issues pulling up PSAT scores on College Board? I have also been trying to pull up an SAT score report so I can use their score converter and I canât get anything past the math and reading/writing score. I canât even pull up where we sent the SAT scores. Hopefully that all gets straightened out before it is time to send scores for applications.
My kidsâ school called kids into a meeting in April/May and let them know they were at least commended. Two years ago, they also told kids who were clearly above the stateâs historical cutoff (which had ranged within 3 points in recent years) that they likely were semifinalists. This year they said nothing about that because of the uncertainty of state cutoffs with the new test.
@UniformMom, I just checked and I can see all of the scores for S easily. He only has subject test and the old SAT from 2015, but all of the scores are there.
@mtrosemom Thank you. That means something is up. I sent them an email. I can see AP scores and part of the only SAT he has taken (March 2016) and none of his 2015 PSAT. I have seen it all on there before this week.
@UniformMom let me know what you find out. CollegeBoard is allowing me to see everything except my PSAT score. Iâm not sure what the deal is.
