@therealdeal23 no one knows any cut offs yet other than commended, which is 209 nationwide. Letters were supposed to be mailed to principals today. Guess we will know soon.
@therealdeal23 no one knows any cut offs yet other than commended, which is 209 nationwide - as @disshar posted.
Per Compass Prep - one source of projections of cut offs ā http://www.ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā /national-merit-semifinalist-cutoffs/
For NC - Most likely cuttoff they say is a Selection Index (SI) of 217 but there is range given of SI 215-218. Weāll know in the next few weeks - maybe sooner. Good luck.

No news yet but we should monitor - just as they suggest monitoring our thread:
Update 8/23/16 Supposedly mail went out today from NMSC, but it will be going to schools, not students. Some results should start dribbling in.
**Update 8/22/16
National Merit Semifinalist and Commended Scholar announcements will be made soon (although we do already know the Commended cutoff of 209). We expect NMSC to mail information to schools this week. Because not all schools are in session, students may not immediately find out their status. I will try to regularly update this page with the most current information. In some cases, this will not be the exact cutoff but simply scores that did or did not qualify ā these help narrow down the estimated range. Students are generally not told the cutoffs, but it doesnāt hurt to ask your counselor and forward along the information. You are welcome to post anonymously. The public release date is 9/14/16. Until that date, NMSC will not provide cutoff information to students. After that date ā if your stateās cutoff has not already been confirmed ā you can call NMSC for more information. The forum on collegeconfidential.com is always very active this time of year, and students from across the country will be sharing information. I will be out of the office from 8/26 ā 9/4, but I will try to update this page at least once a day.
Thanks for posting that. Question: Will the letter be going to the principal or the guidance counselors? Just wondering who to ask. I know the guidance counselors will get the info, but will it go to the principal first and then he passes it along? Sort of hard to believe that in this age when everything else associated with the college process is communicated electronically, this is happening via snail mailā¦
Iād go right to the principal.
Part of the problem with highly confidential material is that e-mail in general isnāt secure. Youād need to send via a secure e-format, or fax or regular mail, just like with health records. Whether the semifinalist results should be treated at the same level of confidentiality as health records is, of course, a legitimate question.
I think the mailings to the schools is happening now (supposedly yesterday) - maybe NM folks would confirm that much by phone. So I think counselors will find out in the next few days. I will send an inquiry to ours tomorrow or Friday. My DS may make it or miss it by a point - some closure either way would be good. for those who have started school already, more likely the info will start to trickle out. Our starts after Labor Day.
I just called and letters went out to the schools late yesterday through regular mail. We have a new GC so I am going to have to stay on top of everything when it comes to NMSF.
@Tgirlfriend Did anyone else at your Sās school score a 218-220 SI?
I keep reading ācommendedā as āConnecticutā and getting excited thinking scores are out.
Letās get this over with already!
@itsgettingreal17 ā¦no maāam. The next closest to my S was a 202.
@SonOfAbraham ā¦I know ā¦right. My anxiety level is out the roof right now. We need either closer or to move on.
Iāve been lurking on this thread and just wanted to wish you and yours good luck! Hoping that the cutoffs break in favor of you all.
@Tgirlfriend Thanks for calling them for us!
Maybe Iām just being overly cautious, but have any of you seen the letters that have gone out in previous years? Would I be risking my kidsā status if I shared their score here before the ārelease dateā? If they make the cutoff Iām pretty sure theyāll be the only homeschoolers in DC on the list. It would be pretty obvious.
@Tgirlfriend ā very helpful that you confirmed with NMC that the mailings did go out. Given how slow CB was on things and the confusion caused with concordance tables etc. it is at least comforting to know the actual results are going out though it will take awhile for us to get clarity. Good luck to you and others who are waiting.
@candjsdad ā¦have you gotten a letter already this year? I donāt think it would matterā¦just put your state and SI number. We are just trying to gather information on this forum.
@candjsdad I doubt NMS follows this thread and no one has ever gotten in trouble for sharing on a public website. If it makes you more comfortable, you could create another account and not specify that you are a home schooler, just share that you know that X cutoff made it in DC. Or PM the cutoff to one of us and we wonāt specify that its from a homeschooler.
Last year there was a poster who shared EVERY cutoff - and it was 100% accurate. Must have had inside info at NMS.
@candjsdad I was wondering the same thing! (weāre not homeschoolers). Do the homeschooling families get a different letter? If not youāll see the wording yourself and can make that determination. I will pm you shortly.
I would think by friday, saturday at latest, sent letters will have reached schools and homeschools. As long as its sent first class.
Iām pretty sure the homeschooling families get the same letters the schools would get. However, my sonās year, the school got an actual book listing EVERY semi-finalist in the country, and homeschoolers donāt get that. The school gave that book to me since my son was the only one, but not until after the hoopla had died down. But if homeschoolers got that book, wouldnāt that be nice? LOL! I hear your worry though @candjsdad . I was so excited my sonās year that I posted to FB as soon as we heard. And then pulled it back down in case we got called out on that.
