National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

If the PSAT is mostly to qualify students in the top 1 percent for National Merit Scholarships it seems absurd that CB made the test easier thus compressing the scores. It does not distinguish properly between the best students. A student in NJ DC MA will fail to qualify with 730/760 on the verbal portion. Everyone makes silly mistakes sometimes and this is what happened to you I fear. The test needs to be harder to remove random errors in selection. I feel for you, but you can be proud of your SAT and ACT scores. I am sure colleges won’t hold it against you but I am sorry you have missed out on the money and honor.

Nobody is talking about post 6491 which states:

My friend got nmsf with 216 in FL

If true wouldn’t that be the first bona fide dispute of Art’s scores? Was pretty certain that Art indicated that the FL cutoff = 217. Thought I was done posting but…

Agree with Arts utahs number ( 215), but you commented it was mid point. I’m pointing out it is on very top of range… None the less thanks for all your great imput…

@Harryp17 Could you confirm with your friend that they got a 216 in FL and made NMSF? This is kind of important, since we heard that the cutoff in FL was 217.

@mnpapa29 @Ynotgo Wondering the same about FL My kid is out of the running, but still curious about FL

217 number for FL on the other blog was from a comment by Nathan who said GC confirmed that 217 made it and 216 did not.

However, comment here was 2nd hand and kid’s friend may have mis-remembered the SI.

My DS’s SAT score would translate to a 214 SI. Since the commended score is 209, is his SAT score high enough for confirming his PSAT score for Finalist?

@SouthernMother, it doesn’t work that way. I know that in the past, the NMC used a total of 1960 or higher as a confirmation score for the old test. No one knows what the score for the new test will be, but guesses have been 1400 or higher. Hope this helps you.

@rat5 the PSAT isn’t mostly for NM. NM is just a tiny fraction of the people that CB wants to be taking the PSAT. The target demographics are the education departments and the 99%. (Might be my cynic showing, but whatever)

CB has no motivation to distinguish among the top students. CB isn’t NMCorp.

Does anyone have the cutoff for PA?

Has someone with a 217 in Tennessee actually verified that it didn’t make the cut? Because 218 seems too high for Tennessee.

Thanks for the clarification

Is 219 AZ confirmed cutoff?
@zeeke007

I agree that I suspect the 218 for TN is not correct… Just because it’s an outlier and much higher than predicted.

the guy we can’t call by name who runs a blog we can’t talk about has now published a final table with ALL state cutoffs

DS is in with 216 in Utah!!!

S is in. Happy dance!

Wow…that is super high for AZ. They are now higher than states they have not been higher than before (CO, DE, PA, NC) and on par with states that are always higher (GA, ILL, OR, NY)

TN really isn’t a singular outlier -there are many states that saw increases from last years cutoffs. Several had an increase of 6 pts, like TN, and some increased even more, by 7-9 pts. If you were familiar with cutoffs in prior years, these increases just can’t seem right, I’m sure. The new test/new scoring clearly made a big difference. (I never had any reason to pay attention before this year, but in my state the cutoff didn’t change at all.)
