National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

Got a call from our counselor yesterday noon. California.

DD was notified at school yesterday. The principal came into her class and announced it (oops) and then gave her the letter from NM with her log in information and also who to work with at school to do the paperwork. The school also wrote a really nice letter congratulating her. It was super nice and DD found out one other girl also made it, one of her very good friends since elementary school. Considering our school has not had a NMSF since 2009, it was exciting for both of them.

I logged onto the parent part of the account. You have to do that to give permission for the student to “enter the competition.” I read all of the directions and specifically looked for the SAT confirming score number and it isn’t there! You would think by the time they sent the letters, they would know what the score would be.

I just wanted to pass on the info that the letter DID say that although there is a SAT test in December it was strongly suggested to take it no later than the November date. DD is done with testing and I sent her score to NM when she took her subject tests in June (as it was free and nothing to lose if she didn’t make the cutoff.) I thought that I would share the info for those of you still looking to sign up for the SAT for the qualifying score.

Good luck to those of you still waiting.

Still waiting in CA, nothing yet :frowning:

Got email response from our GC (in California) that they will notify kids on Sept. 14. It had a smiley face though.

I think its really unfair for schools to hold the result out so late, esp if there are kids who have to take the SAT.

Was notified today, in Massachusetts with a 222 SI. Just wondering, I got my testing done fall of last year with the old SAT. Can I use those scores to confirm my status or will I need to take the SAT again?

My daughter took the old SAT last fall like you. I am thinking that should be fine.

If your student has received a letter from his/her school/principal, is it from NMSC or something created by the school? Was it addresses to the student? Waiting on notification still
 Thx

Still waiting for official confirmation.

@paulcord The letters are from the NMSC and addressed to the principal of the student’s school.

As has been said before, last fall’s scores are fine.

At this point I’m mainly curious to see which and how many other students at the school made it. In the past it has ranged from 0 to 5 per year.

Did the new psat result in more semifinalists at your school?

@paulcord My kid received two letters from the principal, one from her school and one from National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The NMSC letter is dated 8/23 and is address to her. It says “Congratulations! You have qualified as a Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program”
blah, blah ,1 of 16,000
and then “Except for your family and your high school principal, is information is confidential until Wednesday, September 14, 2016 when National Merit Scholarship Corporation will release the names of the Semifinalists to news media nationwide.” The rest of the letter has directions to log onto the application with a temporary user name and password and information about the actual application process.

Her other letter was from her school principal and very nice and personal stating they are very proud of D and how they will stay in touch to complete their part and see letter from NM. It’s a big relief for us to know her school is on it even if the principal did slip and announce it in front of DD’s class. DD already has most of her application done, very easy, list ecs, one essay. The school has to write a recommendation letter, send transcript and I think that’s all.

If your school doesn’t tell you soon, don’t panic because the application is simple and the essay prompt was already posted on this forum so you can write it while you wait, it’s short, 650 words or less.

And yes, last year’s scores are fine. DD took the old SAT last year and sent that score.

GC notified my DD today that she qualified for NM in California with a score of 221. GC gave DD a copy of a letter from NM . . . same language quoted by @fidoprincess above. The application, as mentioned, is very straightforward.

Thank you for the letter info. Waiting patiently

Hi - is this the official cutoff for Georgia? How did you find out?

Sorry - new to this thread and I’m afraid I’m not posting correctly. Just wondering how official the 219 prediction is for Georgia. Has anyone actually received a notification yet or are these still just predictions? Thanks for your help.

@EvilMom
219 is the number for Georgia based on crowdsourced info from various sites including this one. It hasn’t been disputed yet so it should be safe.

Will a new sat score of 1450 fulfill the sat requirement for national merit semifinal its to be finalist

1450 should have a very high probability of fulfilling the requirement. At worst the SI would be 210 with a 650/800 split. That’s higher than 209 which I read in another thread is expected to be the highest SI required.
