My D15 did not send her college transcript. However, all her college classes were listed on her HS transcript. She advanced to finalist status.
Agree with mtrosemom, we did not need to send in CC transcripts for DD because they were on her transcript.
@paveyourpath and @JBStillFlying Thanks for the info.
His HS transcript is in a 3-column format and appears to allow a max of 12-15 characters for the course title (depending on number of uppercase letters). For college courses, the department and course number seem important in addition to the title. Even for HS courses, the abbreviations get a little odd: āEngrgSclp/Dsn Hā is one on his HS transcript. Heās taking a UC course this quarter, for example, that has a 27-character title and doesnāt abbreviate well; and that doesnāt include the course dept/number code.
So, probably no good solution other than either my sending all the transcripts (in which case I know they are sent) or asking the school to forward them (in which case I donāt know, because even our HS GC doesnāt trust the registrar who would do that).
I will probably send all transcripts if NM has that option. He is not planning to apply to colleges with NMSF scholarships (other than USC and possibly UChicago). But, a 1-year direct from NMSC scholarship would be helpful. Since no one seems to know how those are determined, it seems like doing things that better show his course rigor might help.
Iām not concerned about advancement to finalist. The big barrier for some students seems to be having a C or worse on the transcript, and S does not have that issue.
Are there instructions in the info the student can access for how to send a CC transcript to NMSC? S has a number of classes at the CC that wont be on his HS transcript. Or do people think its better to have the CC send it to the GC and have them deal with it (assuming they will)?
I wonder how they determine the winners of the $2500 NMSC scholarships? This past spring they gave out 2500, about 1 in 6 finalists getting one. The 2 schools in our neighrhood had about 75 NMSF combined and only 7 got the $2500 scholarship. So, less than 1 in 10 (assuming most NMSF became finalists). Our school had the most NMSF in the area and received the $2500 at about half the national rate. I would guess from this they strongly consider hardships overcome or things like that which might indicate more need.
Longtime lurker here ā finally jumping in on the conversation. S17 is a NMSF this year. The school has not officially informed students (3 of them) yet, but my son did ask his GC if the school had the list and if he was on it because he was preparing his brag sheet for LORs; she confirmed. Yesterday he asked when he would receive the info for the application, and GC told him she didnāt know because that would come from NM. I went to talk to her and told her that the school is supposed to print out a letter with the studentās log on info and password, but she said she was not given that. She said she only had her own log on info, and she has not logged on yet. Does she need to log on in order to get the student letters? I mentioned that as a possibility, but she was not convinced and did not sound like she would try soon because of other deadlines. She thinks that last year a paper letter came from NM, either to the student or the school, and that may be in a separate mailing. (The school is small and fairly new, and no one has the official title of Principal. They had their first NMSF last year. There was no announcement for her; I only know because I looked up the state list last year.) Does anyone, maybe a homeschool parent, know specifically how the schools get the student letters? Do they have to log in first? Thanks in advance, and thanks for all that Iāve been reaping while lurking!
@flatkansas I didnāt see any such instructions. The high school is actually the party that completes and submits the application. When the student completes his/her portion and submits, it then gets added to what the high school is submitting. Very confusing. No doubt the hs has a LOT more instructions on this stuff.
@flatKansas just as an update to your post #6883 here are the remaining instructions pertaining to college courses. These are for full-timers so not sure to what extent it applies to those still in high school with CC courses which wonāt be on the hs transcript. Best to check with the high school directly to see what they recommend.
"SEMIFINALISTS NOW ENROLLED FULL TIME IN COLLEGE
As instructed in the OSA, submit the completed application to the school official (high school you last attended), who will complete the schoolās sections of the application for final transmittal to NMSC by October 12, 2016. If you report a college choice using the OSA, it should be the college you plan to attend during the 2017ā18 academic year.
To be considered for Finalist standing, you must meet all requirements specified on page 1 and, immediately after the end of the current term, arrange to have your college send an official transcript of all college course work you have taken to Scholarship Administration at NMSC."
Not sure about the having to log-in first, but she DEFINITELY has access to the individual letters to the students from NMSC, and that letter has the studentās log-in information. It is NOT a separate mailing. You need to be persistent and get her to actually look at the information she has. It took me a couple of contacts with the school, but we finally got the info yesterday. Our counselor forwarded a copy of the letter to our home email and it was directed through a printer, so that makes me think that she may have had to print them (i.e. had to access them online).
The letter to the student says āget your part done ASAP so you can get it back to your school and they can do their part and return the package by October 12ā. (right, just like my school got me the information ASAP?!)
what is the PSAT cutoff for Arizona?
Arizona 219
@StillLotsToLearn Yes, she needs to log in so that she can print out the student letters. I think the paper mailing may be the list of commended students, which should come out late this month.
I donāt understand why so many schools are completely clueless about this. Itās been a thing for nearly a century now. I know in our district thereās a strong focus on the kids who are struggling, meaning the high achievers get well nigh ignored. I guess with No Child Left Behind thatās a common scenario?
Just wanted to add as another frustrated parent here. My son still has sill has not received his information from his school to log in. When he ask his GC, she said she hasnāt received anything yet. I emailed his Principal today and hope to hear back soon. (His principal is new this year, and came from a MS. Wonder if that has anything to do with it. )
Those of you who have not yet received the letter from your childās school, have you tried calling NMSC and asking them to fax or email it to you? The information is now publicly available and the letter is to your child so they may send it to you and I think it is important for the NMSC to know that some schools need more education on the process. The school should be able to follow directions which I assume are spelled out for them in the letter they receive.
@StillLotsToLearn & @Tribruin After the student completes their portion of the app, the school has items to take care of (LOR, transcript). You may want to outline for them now what the process will be so they realize the app is coming back to them to complete some steps. Once your student has the code, have the student portion done ASAP so you can put it back in the schoolās hands for completion quickly. Keep on top of the school to make sure they complete their part by the Oct 12 deadline.
Can anyone confirm Virginia as 221? I got a 221, but told that I was commended. If itās actually 222, Iād like to know. If someone made a mistake, Iād also like to know so I can hopefully fix the problem.
Iāve read multiple sites that cited it as a 221, but my county doesnāt say Iām a SF.
@SMcOsk VA was 221. Contact NMSC and see if you were supposed to be on the list.
Do you go to a boarding school?
