My daughter got locked out too. she just called national merit corporation and they set it right. Just google their phone number.
Okay, so our clueless counselor has no idea what sheâs supposed to do about National Merit. My son finished his essay and submitted his portion of the application in late September. Here weâre less than a week away from the deadline and NO ONE AT THE SCHOOL KNOWS ANYTHING. Has anyone ever missed out on National Merit because the school didnât do their portion? What do we do???
@spaamie1 contact national merit with your concerns they will work with your school and may extend deadline if need since your student has done their part.
@spaamie1 We are in a similar situation here as well. DD submitted but school has not. I emailed school to try and light a fire to get them to do their portion and my kid went in as well but as of today, they have still not uploaded their part. There is no school tomorrow, so not counting the weekend, we are down to 3 days for school to do their part by next Wednesday-yikes!
I would email your sonâs counselor and also have your son go in to see the counselor. He might even have to show them what to do, how to log in, etc. I think this is what the school has to do; upload the school profile, studentâs transcript, a counselor recommendation letter and a short note for the principalâs âendorsement.â Iâm not exactly sure what these things look like but I had my DD meet with the counselor and take in a resume type of list a while ago so the counselor had something to write about. It doesnât seem to be that difficult so Iâm still not sure what the hold up at our school can be.
I was so concerned that I called National Merit and asked them what to do. The man was SO nice and told me that once the studentâs part is submitted (and NMSC can see that date on the application), NMSC understands that itâs really out of the kidâs hands. They donât want any student to fall through the cracks so he assured me that they do everything possible to get the school to so their part. He said they email the school and even call the school and they do extend the deadline if needed. They will try to contact the school repeatedly but in the end, if the school doesnât do their part, there is not much more that NMSC can do.
If DDâs school doesnât get it done by Tuesday afternoon, I plan on arriving at their doorstep Wednesday morning bright and early and make some noise until it gets submitted and I have proof! Once in a great while, itâs necessary for the parent to step in and I think this is one of those times!
Good luck!
I have a paper printout of Washington state. How can I get it to you?
NJ Morris county. The previous link has Central Jersey only
@fidoprincess hope the school submits by today. The proof you would need would be on the national merit site once your student logs in because it will specify whether the school has submitted or not.
D17âs school has been really on the ball but even they waited till today to submit! (my kid submitted her portion over a week ago). Sometimes it takes longer because the principal or designee is getting feedback from all the instructors for the letter of rec. That was true in my daughterâs case which is why it was delayed a bit. And sheâs the only NMSF! Canât imagine what happens in a large school with 25-30 semi-finalists - they would need to have a team in place to handle the paperwork.
@JBStillFlying , thanks. Our school finally submitted but it turns out that it was the one other NMSF who was the hold up. In retrospect, it seemed unfair that student had two extra weeks to work on the essay. The school should have set a date for the kidâs part to be done so they both had equal time. The other student just submitted on Monday while DD submitted her part over 2 weeks ago.
I didnât know that the school would have to submit all apps at the same time. At least itâs inâŠI wish I could say the same about all of DDâ applications!
Where are you checking that the school submitted their part?
I called NM Corp today and was told it was not a problem that the school part would not be submitted today. Ours schools are closed til next week due to the hurricane. They indicated that the date is flexible on the school end.
@Hades321 You can check it on the osa.nationalmerit.org portal.
@Ynotgo I have been checking there and see this. I assume this means the high school has not submitted yet?
Your student has submitted his or her application to the high school and you no longer have the option to view the PDF. Please refer any questions to your school or contact NMSC by phone (847) 866-5162 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Central Time.
Iâm viewing the student login and see:
âYou submitted your portion of the application on 10/08/16.
Your completed application was transmitted to NMSC on 10/11/16.â
I donât recall the password for the parent login at this time.
@Ynotgo my daughterâs said the same thing as of this morning. Prior to the school submitting their portion that second line read something like âyour school has not submitted the applicationâ or something like that. So you can rest easy because both portions of the application are now with NMSC. Make sure they have confirming SAT score, and then sit back and wait till Feb. :-w
Edit to add: oops I see you know this already. OK letâs try again:
@Hades321 when I check my portal (the parent version) it says the exact same thing as yours does. Our school submitted this morning so obviously the schoolâs action or inaction doesnât affect that message. You need to have your student log in and check what the portal says. If the school hasnât submitted yet, itâll say that. If they have, itâll give the message that @Ynotgo posted.
Thanks you @JBStillFlying and @Ynotgo . I will check tonight
While applying to UCs, where would you mention the NMSF status?
Activities & Awards --> Awards & Honors
As a mom who did this last year with twins, I recommend calling them to confirm that they have received your test scores. We discovered last year that even though we had paid and sent them well in advance, one set did not show up and had to be resent.
Good Luck to the many students taking the PSAT this year!!
Pulling my hair out. Our school with 7 SF hasnât yet submitted their end yet, over a week past the deadline. The school says they were given an extension to the end of the month. Hoping it is true. And now my D thinks it is hilarious that the school can enforce deadlines when they donât honor them.
