National Residency Match Day ~ March 17, 2017 ~~ Who has a child in The Match?

Three weeks from today, 4th year med students will find out where they’re being matched for their residencies.

By Wednesday, 9pm EST, the students had to rank the programs where they had interviewed. Residency programs also had to submit their rankings of the students they interviewed.

The algorithm, which favors the student, then does its magic and nationally, they find out on March 17, 2017 at 12:00 noon EST.

Many of us are on “pins and needles” wondering where our kids will land for the next 3-5+ years.

My son interviewed in all corners of the country and many places in between. Tuesday night he was still struggling with which program to put as his #1. He knew which his overall top choices are, but knowing which order to list them had him in agony.

Who else has a child in The Match?

Not a child, but a niece I like very, very much. She has her top choice, but worries about how competitive it is and hence isn’t putting her “heart and soul” into that possibility.

The daughter of my closest friends went through this last year. She got her second choice, and couldn’t be happier.

Best of luck to your son.
As his difficulty was which school to rank first,
does that mean he liked them equally? If so, kudos to him.

My daughter was in his shoes a couple of years back and it is truly nerve wracking.

He liked his top 3 choices rather equally. Each has pluses and minuses, which made it harder to list those in the right order. After the top 3, he knew how to rank, so that wasn’t hard.

I don’t, but I wish all students and their parents the best of luck on Match Day.

Yes, playing the waiting game here. D has a future H to add to the decision making.

Yes, mine is doing couples match with soon to be spouse. They, along with their advisors are fairly confident in where they will end up. I am looking forward to watching the live streaming of their match. Just me, and my box of tissues. [-O<

I have a D matching in pediatrics.

A friend’s future son in law (and daughter will be moving with him) struggled because the best program for him wasn’t in the best location for him (or her), even though it was where he grew up. They are very sure he’ll be matched there, so it will be quite the surprise if he’s not!

Me too, essentially. My hopefully-future-daughter-in-law (who is already as much a part of the family as she possibly could be) is going into emergency medicine. Clear first choice, because it is the difference between staying in the same city and continuing to share a home with my son and grandson, vs. moving somewhere else and attendant financial costs as well as disruption to their relationship. So we are all hoping and praying and keeping our fingers crossed.

I think she ranked her programs several weeks ago. #1 and #2 choices have been very clear for a while. Beyond that I don’t know – they are all good programs, but I think anything else will present significant financial and emotional challenges.

March 17, 2017 is also Match Day for 4th year pharmacy students seeking a residency.

My nephew is waiting to see where he’s placed.

Anyone matching into a specialty that requires a prelim/trans internship year? Mine is, which is another twist

^yes, D has a prelim year also.

Good luck everyone! I clearly remember match day '14 and the pins & needles and excitement at the match!

Waiting to hear where my son-law will match.

Wishing everyone happy outcomes in the Match!

(I’ll have one matching next year.)

My good thoughts are with you all too. Looking forward to hearing the matches!

Best wishes to all – students and parents. Hoping for a happy Match Day for your loved ones!

I remember it like it was yesterday, though D matched five years ago. D was fortunate to match at her first choice and did not have to move away from her boyfriend, now her husband. She is happily employed and paying off her loans…

Realizing this is now days instead of weeks away! BREATHE!
The decision is in the works already!
