National University of Singapore

everyone, including domestic applicants, needs to give very strong reasons for wanting to transfer from a college or university one has already chosen to enroll in. that’s the most basic element of any transfer application. in fact, you’ll surely find that a standard essay question asked on many transfer applications is “demonstrate how and why your needs cannot be adequately fulfilled by your current college, and tell us how our college would be able to fulfill them.”

Zeikinxon, I’m glad that US unis aren’t like Singapore unis. In Singapore, you are almighty as long as you have the grades. Conversely, you screw just one exam (and that’s A-Level), and you’re done. I believe the true worth of a student is way more than just 1 A-Level results slip and thus students must be judged in a more all-rounded way. So I’d prefer US’ admissions style more than Singapore’s.

I’m aware of that screwitlah. I simply feel that even in the abscence of a compelling non-academic reason for transferring (e.g. wanting to join my immigrating family), it should still be possible to build a credible case for myself.

considering the stark differences in culture and learning styles between any top American college and NUS… you’ll likely have little problem building a credible case. but the numerous posters above are right.

I agree with everyone who is saying that this is correct. It will be pretty hard to transfer into a selective U.S. college.

It would be easier to go to an “easy to get into” college in the U.S. and then transfer from THAT college to a selective U.S. college.

I’m a little confused, because the deadline for internationals to apply for the residences is 30th May, but I haven’t got the outcome of my application yet.So should I still apply for the accomodation now? Comments from any other international in same sitch, or older students who had this problem would be appreciated…

I have not got my outcome yet either…

This guy (second picture, extreme right Spotlight ) did one year in NTU comm studies and continued at Stanford.

hi – just wanted to ask (since this seems to be singaporeans’ thread?) if NUS/NTU is good in chemical engineering? is it hard to get in for internationals (i’m from an ASEAN country)?

NUS Chem E is extremely competitive even for locals. Along with Med, Law and Dentistry, it is one of the hardest courses to get into. NTU Chem E is alot easier to get into in comparison. I don’t think either is easy to get into for internationals.

hello i was wondering if someone could help me out here.
i got accepted into Boston University for biochemistry and also NUS in faculty of science.
i can’t decide which i should choose.
i have a few questions.

 1. i intend to do my graduate programme in US (hopefully stanford or MIT), so which university (BU or NUS) would give me a better shot at being accepted?
 2. i know i’m going to get some feedback that the environment in BU and NUS are different. but i want to know which would provide me with a better quality education which would then lead to higher career prospects?

i have until june 1st to decide :S

thanks in advance!

Hi, i got into the same situation as pyrobunny. I got admitted to both JHU and NUS. JHU does give me financial aid but still the total expense is around 30k/year (at least that’s what they write on my I-20). NUS, on the other hand, gives me full-ride. I got the Singapore Scholarship which covers all of the expenses at NUS with no bonding after graduation. Here are my thoughts:

For JHU:

 • JHU is more prestigious and globally well-known than NUS. A degree at JHU is more valuable.
 • I dont hate Singapore, but its definitely the place i dont want to live in for 4 years. Visiting SG is fun, but living in SG is boring and depressing to me.
 • I’ll get more chance to get admitted to HYPS grad schools
 • I love America!

For NUS:
• I’m studying computer science. As far as I’m concerned, NUS is pretty good at comp science/engine while JHU concentrates mainly on bio-related majors.
 • My parents can totally afford me going to JHU, but they think NUS is a safer and more practical choice. They want me to do the math: “is JHU = NUS + 120k?”
 • Baltimore is a notorious city with high crime rate and bad neighborhoods while SG is peaceful and friendly.

Help me plz!! Deadline’s coming close.

It looks like the deadline has passed. So what have you two chosen, mib1990 and pyrobunny?

Hi every1!!! im an Cambridge A-level graduate of May 2010 batch applying for the 2011 session. I have 4 A’s (no A*) in Phy Chem Maths Bio. Do i stand a chance in NUS/NTU for Mechanical/Common/Electrical Engineering?

Hello Guys,
I am from the AndhraPradesh state board. For us the 11 class and 12th class marks are combined and are given out 1000.So in My 11th i got a 97pcnt and i am expecting a pcntage of nearly 96.5.Is that enough for NUS and NTU??

Hello everyone there,
I am a student of class 12 in Chandigarh, India.
I am really keen on getting accepted to NUS.
However, IIT coaching has left me with no time to prepare for the SAT.
Please tell me what all I can do to make it to NUS sure shot but wihtout SAT.

Do you have A levels? Most local students do the A levels. SAT is comparatively rarer

I am a student of class 12th(ISC). I want to apply for NUS.
I have got 96% and 91% in my 10th boards and 11th respectively. Do I have a chance og getting into NUS(Civil Engineering).

Hi

I’m currently attending UNSW and doing commerce/law in Sydney, Australia.
I just finished my first year but I want to attend NUS.
Is it hard to get into?
I want to do law/economics or some other business degree (marketing or management)

Cheers

Anyone on this board aware of the new Yale-NUS program/university? Applications come out Feb 1 for the inaugural class beginning in June 2013. Evidently, it has its own campus in Singapore.
