<p>Hi, everyone, my nephew is planning to apply 4 or 5 univeristies from top 50s next year. Right now he is studying in mainland China. I understand he will take both TOFEL and SAT before starting application. I am just not familiar with the whole procedure for international student. Should he do common application online or hard copy? what college asks for seperate application via their own website?
how about recommedation letters and essays? will they be send seperately by mail if the application is done online? will the essay topic be different from college to college? Must the transcript be accreditated by international agency appionted by college or simply translation provide by high school will be fine? </p>
<p>I might come up with more questions later. Right now I really appreciate with any help given by you guys. </p>

Common app essay is always the same for each year. But college supplements may require you to write responses to their questions like “why us”.
Most schools can be applied to online. You can check specifically what the school requires.
As for recommendation letters, actually I am not sure how to send it. But I think u should ask your nephew to get his teachers to seal the letters and mail them to the colleges.

- MIT and some other school does, those just look for them on their websites</p>

- This I’m actually not sure because my school use a separate system to submit grades and recs. Sorry!</p>

- The common-app personal essay is the same for every college that uses common app, but most college have their own SUPPLEMENTS, which usually include 1 or 2(or more) different essays(Like: Why X school? Why this major…etc.)</p>

- Translation provided by high school with signatures and stuff is probably fine. I would suggest you e-mail the college admissions just to double check because transcript IS really important.</p>
