NESCAC Spoken Here:

A quite convincing show of purple. Tomorrow: “The Biggest Little Game in Football” as well as, “The Battle of the Birds” (I’ll leave it to you to figure out which is which.)

And, Yay, Post #1000!!!

These are great, thanks.

Even my Williams student, who doesn’t care an Eph about football, is going to homecoming tomorrow. Don’t mess with Ephelia!

To be fair, 75% of them are milling around the tailgating and the food or watching from somewhere else, and not in the stands.

The NESCAC does not allow their football teams to compete in the postseason, but there is some chatter that it might be allowed in the future…not likely, but it could happen. It would be interesting to see how Trinity would stack up against some of the other smaller D3 schools in a postseason tournament, but the NESCAC roster limits (reinstated next year) would probably make it difficult for a NESCAC team to compete in a potential five game playoff schedule.

But, it should be a GREAT game in Hartford tomorrow!

I didn’t know that! Thank you.

Regarding NESCAC football, they recently expanded their schedule to a nine game season that allows annual competition against all the other NESCAC teams. Prior to this change, a given team played seven
of the conference teams annually but alternated play across seasons among two particular conference teams, playing each biannually. Beyond NESCAC’s prohibition against post-season tournament participation, out-of-conference games also are not allowed in the regular season. It has been a long time since NESCAC football has been tested by out-of-conference D3 teams.

Hamilton football is interesting too. Mostly because I don’t know how they manage to lose like every game. But we love them anyway.

Cross country regionals today. Williams men finished #2 in the Mideast Regional, they’re sure to get an at-large bid to nationals. My man Malcolm Oakes was the #2 runner for Williams today. In an upset, Wesleyan men beat Amherst today.

On the women’s side, Williams dominated the Mideast Region. They put 5 runners in the top 20, and earned the auto-bid to nationals. Freshman Kate Tuttle continues to amaze. The next four NESCACs in the region: Amherst (3rd overall), Middlebury (5th overall), Connecticut College (6th overall), Wesleyan (7th overall). I’m expecting 5 teams to advance from the Mideast Regional for the women.

Tufts women were great, finishing 2nd, only 11 points behind #1 nationally ranked MIT in the East Regional. Individually, Colby and Bates have runners who qualified for nationals.

And Keira Rogan, that walk-on phenom from Hamilton, finished 2nd in the Niagara Regional, she’s on to nationals.

Nationals are in Terre Haute next Saturday. Official at-large invites are announced tomorrow.

Memory Lane. I cut and paste those sections of the original 1973 T&C article of “Alternative Ivies” that covered the NESCACS:

Unfortunately, not listed in the original article are Bates, Trinity or Tufts. I don’t subscribe, so I don’t know who’s now on the list and who’s not.

As I was reading the full list from '73, which has a few curious inclusions and exclusions, I chuckled about T&C, to which my MIL responded, “don’t think that magazine didn’t form a lasting impression for a lot of people; it used to be pretty influential.”

I know not everyone cares about uniforms and helmets, but some kids and fans do – and to me, Hamilton’s best look was when they wore buff-colored helmets with the blue block H on the sides and the blue-white-blue stripe down the middle. Today, there is almost no buff in the uniform – just blue and white – which I think is limiting. And an attractive look certainly couldn’t hurt.

(I follow football religiously, and that includes small schools.)

ETA, since work is slow today:

I think their best look, or the best one I can think of, would consist of buff helmets with a blue H (old school…) or a blue/white profile bust of Alexander Hamilton. I think that could look pretty cool – it would certainly be unique. Blue facemasks and some type of stripe… blue/white. // Blue home jerseys with white and buff numbers and sleeve stripes. // Buff pants with blue/white/blue stripe. Or no stripe.

ETA 2 – looks like they now do have a bust of Hamilton on the helmet. If they made the helmet buff, it would really pop.

Quick recap of the D3 NCAA Cross Country Championships. They were held in Terre Haute, IN (Rose-Hulman was the official host). The weather was overcast and chilly (43 degrees).

On the women’s side, Williams placed 3rd in the nation, a tremendous result. They trailed only MIT, U Chicago. Williams freshman Kate Tuttle was the #1 Eph, and she is the fastest freshman in the country, placing 8th in the championship.

Middlebury’s Audrey Maclean was the top NESCAC runner, placing 6th overall. A great way to close out a very successful season for her.

Other individual women of note: Hamilton freshman Keira Rogan was the second fastest freshman in the country, placing 15th overall. Wesleyan’s Steph Ager placed 20th in the meet.

Order of finish for other NESCAC teams: Amherst (14th overall), Tufts (16th), Middlebury (22nd), Connecticut College (23rd), Wesleyan (24th). NESCAC got the most teams in the NCAAs at 6, UAA was right behind with 5 teams (Chicago, NYU, Emory, Wash U, Carnegie Mellon).

On the men’s side, Williams was also the top NESCAC team, finishing 10th in NCAAs. Ephs senior Chuckie Namiot was the top NESCAC individual, finishing 7th in the country. My man Malcolm Oakes was the #5 runner for the Ephs.

Other NESCACs in the men’s race: Tufts (17th), Amherst (20th), Wesleyan (23rd), Middlebury (25th).

There were three NESCAC schools in the final four for woman’s field hockey (Williams, Tufts, and Middlebury). Middlebury walked away with their 7th consecutive NCAA title.

In Volleyball Middlebury and Colby advanced to the NCAA tournament after Middlebury ended Colby’s perfect in conference season by winning the NESCAC championship. Middlebury had both the NESCAC Player of the year (Molly Harrison, a sophomore) and Defensive Player of the year (Annabella Rando, a first year). It looks like great competition for the next few years because Colby’s team is young as well. Colby’s appearance in the NCAA tournament was their first since 2005 and Middlebury advanced to the sweet sixteen for the first time since 2012 so great showings by both.

I believe Bates was super close to the final 4 for field hockey as well! They’ve had a strong team the past three years or so. Maybe next year they will get to final four!!

Bates had a great run losing to Tufts in the round of 8. I would not be surprised to see them in a final four soon!
