So I’ve recently begun watching some things on Netflix, given that there is abysmally little on mainstream network tv that interests me these days. In particular I’m now watching 13 Reasons Why (controversy aside) and some shows in other languages.
Anyone have anything gripping they are watching on Netflix these days? Does not have to be in English.
I am not a fan of TV but I got hooked 10 minutes in and binge-watched the entire season… in the middle of finals! (And I usually have at least a little self-discipline but…)
Second the recommendations for Orange is the New Black, House of Cards (can’t wait for the new season), Grace and Frankie, Stranger Things.
Will add a recommendation for Bosch-- based on Micheal Connelly’s Harry Bosch mysteries. Connelly is involved in the production so the series is much like the books.
Definitely House of Cards. My wife and I both loved it, watched the whole thing twice, and are eagerly awaiting the next season.
I really liked Breaking Bad. My wife didn’t care for it. I also like the vaguely related sequel Better Call Saul.
I liked the British version of Sherlock. You have to pay attention however.
My wife and I both liked Nurse Jackie.
I have been trying to find good shows or movies in French, largely in the hope of remembering more of my high school French.
Bones is fine to keep one entertained if you don’t want to have to pay close attention.
I have been giving up on network TV largely because there are too many ads. I just can’t stand to see the same advertisement over and over and over again. If they put on new ads each time I could probably handle it. I have actually wondered about dropping cable TV altogether and only going with Netflix plus on-line-pbs.
The Honourable Woman (1 season, 8 episodes, with a glorious Maggie Gyllenhaal)
Borgen (excellent 3-season series from Denmark)
The Fall (British, with Gillian Anderson)
Top of the Lake (with Elizabeth Moss, Mad Men’s Peggy)
Happy Valley (3 season British mystery)
Broadchurch (make sure it’s the British original and not the US remake)
All of these are pretty dark, with the exception of Borgen, which is a political drama. Don’t watch them all in a row.
I agree with many of the above–especially Nurse Jackie.
Gracie and Frankie is good.
Orange is the New Black is A plus.
However, I am actually in mourning for Hart County.
Zoe, Lemon, Levon, Wade, Dr. Breeland.
This is in no way an award winning show.
I finished the series a few nights ago.
It was a really soft and kind series that made me relax.
Would watch it just before sleeping.
Have never heard any reference to it ever.
Netflix series.
Yep, love so many of the above and enjoy reading this thread. I would add The People Vs. O.J. I’m currently watching that now, and only decided to watch as it won awards. Although I remember it of course, I was working FT with a year old baby, so it didn’t pay attention the way I would now. It’s fascinating, so much I didn’t realize. It is a good show!
Is Orphan Black on Netflix now? That’s wonderful. It used to be on Hulu only, I think (and at least a year behind the current season).
I really enjoyed The Get Down last summer (Baz Luhrmann-helmed series about the birth of hip-hop in the Bronx in the late 70s, with lots of NYC politics in the background). The second season just went up, and I look forward to binging it when I get a chance.
My kid got me to watch Sense8, which comes from the Wachovski transisters. It’s completely ludicrous, but also completely beautiful and very affecting, and it’s not too hard to ignore the silliest parts. The premise is that there is a group of people who were born simultaneously in vastly different circumstances all over the world who share a psychic bond and can feel each other’s feelings and, with practice, take over one-another’s bodies and/or pool their skills to help one or another do things he or she otherwise couldn’t. Their distribution is not only geographical, it’s also balanced by gender, race (sort of), sexual orientation, and class. The locations are stunning. Chicago, San Francisco, Nairobi, Mexico City, Berlin, Mumbai, Seoul, London, Reykjavik . . . Of course there’s the requisite Evil Corporate Conspiracy that wants to monetize or kill them. The second season of that is supposed to be released soon.
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a very good comedy series produced by Tina Fey and her husband.
Finally watching “The Walking Dead”. I’d avoided it (although it seems the entire world wasn’t) because I thought it was just about zombies (and of course, they’re pretty gross…). But I was hooked fast. The story isn’t about zombies–it’s about the people who are still alive and how they react in a new world of constant danger. Great acting and story.
FYI, Bosch is on Amazon Prime, not Netflix. I have been waiting for the new season of Bosch, so will start soon. Just started watching Treme from the beginning, it’s been very good so far. I loved The Wire, so it’s great to see some of the actors back in that series.
