My tip for Netflix is to look for foreign movies you’ve never heard of. For example, we recently enjoyed one from France called “Blind Date.” There are also interesting movies from South America, Mexico, Turkey, Korea, and lots of other places that you’ll never see in a theater here. Another good one (from Korea) is called “The Beauty Inside,” about a guy who wakes up in a different body every day.
Disks for Borgen, too.
@Iglooo - you might enjoy Shetland. Beautiful views of the Shetland Isands. Police mystery without the usual American violence.
WOO NETFLIX THREAD!!
I’d like to put in a vote for Netflix originals like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (third season starting soon) and Master of None (second season starting soon). The former is light fare, the second don’t watch with anyone under 13, the first episode is pretty R rated. The second episode of Master of None won an Emmy for writing.
I forgot where to stream Crazy Ex-Girlfriend but it’s pretty genius: hour long comedic drama with original songs. Sounds weird but it works. I was pretty shocked last year that it wasn’t nominated for any music categories at the Emmys; Settle For Me and Sexy Getting Ready Song are fantastic parodies of each song’s genre.
We like Kimmy Schmidt, too.
And Hinterland is set in Wales, Salamander is Belgian (not sure still on Netflix. ) Love Dicte, which is Danish, a female reporter involved with crime. And Dar Salim plays a role.
Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions! I’m also watching a French series called “No Second Chance”, but I haven’t seen enough episodes to recommend it yet. Hotel Beau Sejour is in Dutch, which is oddly kind of understandable. Pretty good also, so far. I hope to find more French shows also.
Turn - Revolutionary War history. Cannot wait for the 3rd season to come to Netflix! (More sex and violence than I expected. Between Hamilton and Turn I’ve learned colonial Americans were frisky!)
I am half-way through season 2 of Turn. As a history-buff, it is fun to watch. As with many historical fiction shows, it is rampant with what we will call literary license (otherwise known as poor research and disregard for readily available facts). Despite its flaws, it is fun. Read about Benjamin Franklin. He was a colonial ‘player’.
Besides many of those already mentioned: Luther, Marcella, American Crime, Better Call Saul, The Killing, Longmire, and Wallander.
The Killing may not be Netflix. But I found it very binge inducing.
Miss Fischer’s Murder Mysteries
Love is such a great show. Really, really good. I highly recommend it.
Various female family members are completely hooked on some of the Turkish TV series available on Netflix, notably Lovebird. You have to be willing to read subtitles.
“The Crown”
I thought that was one of the best television shows in many years.
Murder in Paradise series and Doc Martin series both BBC I believe. If you have not seen Amelie it is a cute french film.
Doc Martin - a wonderful light series that hooks you in for odd reasons
Hell on wheels.
Call The Midwife (excellent series. Netflix has all past seasons. Current season running on Sunday night PBS)
Broadchurch (with David Tennant)
Last Tango in Halifax (extremely binge-watchable.
Downton Abbey (for anyone out there who has not seen it yet)
Orange is the New Black
The Bletchley Circle (season 1 is the best)
The Andy Griffith Show (a classic that still makes me laugh)
The Office (UK version. Slightly quirkier than US version)
Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown”
