Loved Miss Fisher’s mysteries and Midwives. We watched it on Amazon Prime - but it looks like the first season of Humans is on Netflix. It’s a smart sci-fi show about androids becoming conscious. All the usual questions get posed, but it’s a particularly engaging cast and some smart storytelling.
Fair warning on Call the Midwife. If you go there, make sure you have adequate tissues handy. It is a wonderful show, but one that will make you both cry and smile.
the series of unfortunate events
Sherlock (they have all the old ones)
My recommendations are:
Documentary: Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father.
Comedy: Portlandia
Super Hero: Luke Cage
OP - Post back when you have watched all the recommendations - talk about binge watching.
I just discovered a Turkish series on youtube that I’m hooked on. It’s called, “Aşk Laftan Anlamaz”
Each episode in the series is two hours long. Would you believe I watched four episodes without English subtitles just trying to make out the storyline and I was hooked. I finally found a facebook page which has all the episodes with English subtitles. I believe the title means love is not understood by words.
So many fans on youtube were begging for English translations that they created the following facebook page.
Ask Laftan Anlamaz English fans. You will find all the episodes (videos) there with English subtitles.
I need to go watch episode 6 now.
Narcos
Some subtitling drives me nuts, it’s automated.
If you’re into early German silent era film history “From Caligari to Hitler” has some great footage of that era.
@raclut and @Consolation These Turkish series sound intriguing – I love foreign movies/TV series – so your heads up is appreciated.
I’ll recommend It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Arrested Development on Netflix since I haven’t seen those mentioned yet. They’re older but really funny if you haven’t watched them yet.
I’m also on the Kimmy Schmidt and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend bandwagon if you haven’t seen them.
I think I’m going to try those Miss Fisher Mysteries!
DIL recommended Miss Fisher to me a few years ago and I spread it through my extended family. We are all fans now. No season 4 in sight, but I see rumors from time to time that they are considering a movie. Crossing fingers since there’s no such thing as too much Miss Fisher!
It’s going off Netflix on May 15, so binge-watch it now.
The Ken Burns documentaries are great–they seem to go on and off Netflix. The one on Prohibition was particularly interesting.
Highly recommend the documentary “Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons”… The Honduras and Philippines episodes in particular are insane! The guy basically lives in these prisons as an inmate for a few days to a week.
B-)
Why does Netflix remove programs? Don’t they have basically unlimited data capacity?
Chardo, they have to buy or “rent” the intellectual property rights of the movies they’re distributing. Some contracts will only allow free distribution for a set period of time, then the rights revert back to the film company. Some contracts allow a particular distributer an indefinite right to distribute. It just depends on the contract of each film/series.
And in some cases, they’re managing demand.
We enjoyed “Justified”…U.S. Marshall Service, drug ‘wars’, Kentucky hollows, interesting character development, excellent writing…Oops, “Justified” is on Amazon Prime, not Netflix.

“Why does Netflix remove programs? Don’t they have basically unlimited data capacity?”
I think in some cases it is to generate demand (Hurry! See’em before they’re gone!). Because I’ve noticed that often the removed movies quietly reappear in line-up later.
Neftlix’s biggest expenses are obtaining streaming rights for the shows and movies on its service. In order to bring on new material, they have to push others off. They bring them back eventually so if you wait long enough you’ll see it back again.
