New American Idol thread

Adam is a good singer, but I really do not like his type of singing.

cartera45: Michael Sarver, Danny Gokey, Ricky Braddy. Also Branden Rogers on Idol Tonight.

Vote for the Worst is also claiming victory. They claim they pushed Kris over the top in order to disappoint the producers who so blatantly favored Adam.

Wow… the winner guy said "Adam deserves this "…deep.

Kris apparently got 38 million votes from his home state:
[Conway reacts to Kris’ win - FOX16.com](http://www.fox16.com/news/local/story/Conway-reacts-to-Kris-win/sv8BNSsGY0G8GRZWSr0fRw.cspx)

The number doesn’t seem reasonable to me, but it would certainly help to explain what happened.

I don’t think Kris won because America is homophobic, as one poster suggested. He won because he was much closer in style to Danny and got the Danny votes. I think this pretty much happens every year. The votes from the third runner up swing over to the singer most like that person. Remember they said last week that the difference between 1 and 2 was very close. If more Danny votes went to Kris, then that’s why he won. I personally could not decide which one to vote for and didn’t much care only because now that AI is in its 8th season, I know it doesn’t matter who actually wins as often the person who is fourth or seventh goes on to the bigger career. Adam reminds me of Jennifer Hudson – too big of a talent to be captured by something like American Idol – too hard to box into the formula of the show. And I also think that America resents being influenced and the show has never pushed a singer the way they pushed Adam. It was really pretty obnoxious no matter how talented he is. Americans tend to support the underdog.

Two other comments. Kara can sing and I was glad to see Bikini Girl taken down a notch. And I think Kara’s natural ivory skin was a lot more attractive than whatever Bikini Girl had going on. And I was most impressed by Cyndi and Allison. What they did was incredibly challenging from a musical perspective and showed that Allison is very musical in addition to her vocal skills. I can’t believe she is only 17.

Apparently the Kris fans were far better organized than those for Adam. If you head on over to KrisAllenation.com you will be amazed at how they prepared – with links to power votings sites, how to get around the geographical limitations of voting, and how to power text.

Also, it seems it’s hard for someone from a big city to win AI – it’s hard to get people from LA (Katherine McPhee) or San Diego (Carly and Adam) all excited about someone from their town on a TV show. It’s just not that big a deal. But this is probably (no offense to Conway) the biggest thing that’s ever happened to them.

America is religious though, and homophobic. Danny had the Christian vote (which is a huge vote in American Idol) and that went to Kris once he got the boot. You could see how American Idol played up Adam’s homosexuality especially as the season progressed.

When Jennifer Hudson got kicked off, I remember a huge outrage - people saying the show was racist, etc. This reaction may have been part of the the reason why Fantasia beat Diana DeGarmo in the season finale. Then Hudson went on to be very successful. Also, in Season 6, I remember a lot of resentment when Chris Daughtry was kicked off; however he also went on to be successful. I think the final decision in Season 8 was an upset similar to the other seasons except it happened during the season finale. Unless I’m wrong, I think Adam will be more successful than Kris when the time comes. A bit like Clay Aiken.

I just wish Adam could have won the title. It made me lose faith in America.

I take back what I said partially. The reason why Kris won was because Arkansas accounted for 38 million out of 100 million votes.

Adam was so very music theater. I go to see music theater maybe once every three years - and that’s usually at the high school level.

But I listen to the radio or my itunes library every day. Kris is a better guy for selling music that way.

Racist, homophobic, blah, blah…LOL! American Idol is about selling advertising on their TV program and being profitable in other venues.

Adam as Freddy Mercury indeed, mafool! Wow it all makes sense now…Adam definitely has his niche & I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from him. Pleasantly surprised about Kris, and can’t wait to hear/buy what comes out of the studio from him. Whew :P

My H said this morning “Adam is gay, really, I didn’t know that”. Sometimes I’m not sure what rock my H came under. LOL.

Adam all but said this morning on Fox and Friends that he is in talks with Queen to replace their lead singer. When asked point blank by Brian Kilmead, he smiled and took the fifth. I don’t think 2nd on Idol is going to slow him down. :)

I think they both got what they wanted from the show, and Adam will have no lack of opportunities.

I love Kris, but Adam is the reason that this show is revived. I think that is why Simon was so upset. He wanted to reward Adam for saving the show, which has gotten boring and old the last couple years.

TV is all about interesting. Can anyone honestly say that David Cook or Jordin Sparks were as interesting as Adam Lambert?

You can see Kris at open-mike night at any coffee house in any college town in America. He is a good singer (as are many, many people) with real limits and just about zero personal style. He seems like a nice guy (as are many, many people). He’s not an artist.

I don’t think his victory was due to homophobia so much as to America’s teenage girls choosing something comfortable and familiar when given a binary choice as part of an extended narrative, so they had time to become invested in Kris’ “character”. Unfortunately, that’s not how the music business works in life beyond Idol. He’s going to get his 15 minutes, but that’s it.

Adam was on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, he was featured in a Rolling Stone article which touted him as revitalizing the AI franchise, and he doesn’t have to release Kara’s awful song!

I wouldn’t feel too sorry for him…

I think this is totally true. It would be interesting to see where all past winners were from but I think it’s a huge drawback to be from a big city. Katharine McPhee’s hometown visit was depressing – just her little private high school compared to these towns where it seems like tens of thousands of people turn out. Katharine was from my part of the world but no one here felt some big obligation to vote for her because of that. I doubt people in San Diego voted out of geographic loyalty but I’m sure people in AK did. What is power texting? I think it’s important to remember that teen girls play a huge role. How else to explain Sanjaya?

I heard a guy on Today note that six of the eight winners were from Southern states. I’m sure geography has a lot to do with it.

JHS, I think your comments are “spot on.” Open mike night for Kris in a college coffee house. Very nice voice, Nothing special. Bland.

We are in San Diego and there was a lot of support for Adam around here, but you are correct that large cities do not garner the kind of support the smaller towns do. We have loved Adam all through the competition and know that he will do well in the future. I will not be at all surprised if he does much better than Kris in this business.

We really hope that at some point Adam will come back and do Broadway as we saw him in Wicked in LA and would love to see him in New York. He definitely gave a big boost to AI this year as it was beginning to get very stale.

In the end AI is not about talent, it is a popularity contest.
