New American Idol thread

What are the websites with up to date listings of appearances of Adam and Kris? I know Kris will make the standard rounds, but what about Adam? He really grew on me and I would like to catch some of the interviews he will be doing.

Edited to add what I found:

Thursday – May 21st – Jay Leno – Winner
Friday – May 22nd – Larry King – Winner and Runner Up
Tuesday – May 26th – Regis and Kelly – Winner
Wednesday – May 27th – Regis and Kelly – Runner Up

I heard Randy Jackson on air with Ryan Seacrest this morning. He said he felt it was the Danny votes swinging to Kris that won him the competition. He felt that the things that attracted fans to Danny were likelier to transfer over to Kris. Ryan asked him what he thought of the song and Randy said his mother raised him with the adage, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

Also, I think they should have at least one evening or two when singers have to sing the same song. It’s the best test of talent to see what they do with the same material. By the time they do that on the last night, it no longer matters, especially if the song is as bad as this one.

Adam will be better off doing his own deal with a label of his chosing. Kris–will be doing musical theater in a year.

barrons - Better watch out what you say about musical theatre around here! Kris doesn’t have the stage presence to excel in MT.

Kris will do MT? Highly unlikely, but time will tell.

I watched the AI finale on Tivo after learning about the disappointing (to me) results here on CC.

The show was definitely entertaining, if at times goofy.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Hearing Allison again, even though she wasn’t given enough solo time (I miss her)

Watching Kara out-sing and out-bikini Bikini girl

Adam singing with Queen (was this supposed to be a duet with Kris? – couldn’t tell)

Jason Mraz thingy – then we could do a 1-1 comparison of Kris vis a vis Jason

Appreciating Adam’s awesome talent AND amazing poise and powerful qui

Watching Allison hug “big brother” Adam after the news

–Watching my teen D and her teen friends SQUEAL over Kris Allen (yeesh)
–Holding my tongue that I already knew the results – only to find that these teen girls had also checked online for the results and were trying to SPARE me the heartbreak by not squealing and gloating too much!

Adam was still the REAL Idol all season – the results were thrown by Florida and Ohio.

Very unlikely. Kris’ voice isn’t good enough to do MT. The only way he’d ‘do MT’ is like Taylor Hicks did, in a small undemanding role in a show where it was hoped his name would sell tickets.

Seems like everyone from AI ends up in Grease - not sure how Kris would fit in, but if Taylor Hicks can do it, all is possible.

cross posted with alwaysamom - agreed

I never said he’d star in it. Lots of semi-name talents end up doing touring MT to earn a paycheck as their name sells some tickets. Folks, it’s just MT–nobody confuses that with high art. He has good looks and a passable voice. That’s enough when you add in some minor celebrity.

barrons - I pity the fool who dares to say “just MT.”

I think we have some perception/definition problems here.

There is MT as in Broadway anjd its ilk
There is MT as in small venue touring or local repertory

Some of the performers who can pull it off in the second category would not stand a chance in the first.

mafool, I think the definitions have to be more precise.

As I mentioned much earlier in this thread, there are many MT performers who are every bit as good as Adam. The reality is that while denigrating MT by saying that Kris would be doing it in a year, there is no way that he has the vocal ability to handle a musical and what it entails to do a show eight times a week. Adam does! He’s done it. His vocal abilities, which everyone from fans to critics to the experts have praised and been amazed by, are typical of many MT performers.

It’s not only Broadway and its “ilk” ( not sure what you meant by that but it sounds nasty), but touring companies (the size of the venue has no influence on this), sit down productions of tours (which is what Adam was in, in addition to reg. theatre), regional theatre (much of which is repertory and they are amazing actors, trust me), and summer stock have actors who absolutely ‘stand a chance’ on performing on Broadway. Many/most Broadway actors have, indeed, performed in touring productions or regional theatre before being cast in a Broadway show, and it also works in reverse. It isn’t unusual at all for Broadway actors to then be cast in a touring production or regional theatre. Happens all the time.

The real difference, and what I think mafool, was trying to say, is with community theatre, which is amateur in both nature and in reality. I understand that many people who are not familiar with the acting world may not understand the difference, and also that many do not have the opportunity to see professional theatre but it gets tiresome hearing the same old refrain about MT on Idol.

Musical theater is hardly a fall back position for anyone. Singing can be a fall back position. Dancing can be a fall back position. Acting can be a fall back position, but MT involves being good at all three so it is no fall back.

ilk was not intended as nasty at all!!! I LOVE Broadway musicals–grew up on them as a matter of fact. I meant “ilk” as a shortcut for describing other high production value productions.

See, we have a small LAC in our town that presents a summer repertory program that includes a sprinkling of equity actors. The theater is intimate. The musicals do not play every night. And I have seen performers of Kris’s “ilk” in that setting. That is what I mean.

And you are oh so correct about the stamina and technique necessary to sustain a performance over 8 performances a week.

I haven’t watched all that much of AI but I watched enough to think that Adam should have won. Some of the other singers were good enough singers but Adam was different and good although he went overboard on the screaming sometimes which probably turned some people away from him.

But to the point - no, no one in my house actually voted - we just express opinions and complain to each other.

Even Broadway is not above bringing in “name” stars who might not be the best singers/dancers etc to help the box office. Many people would rather see some major Hollywood star sing and dance adequately–but live in person, than some technically better person that they never heard of.

Yes, Broadway does “stunt” casting in order to sell tickets. Celebrity sells - theater is not immune to it - especially in a down economy. If any celebrity ever had an inkling to be on stage, now is the time to let that be known. Fortunately, they can do it in minor roles and still bring people in. I’m wondering about Spiderman though - are they going the celebrity route even with the leads?

barrons, I know well what happens on Broadway. We’ve had friends and family in the theatre biz for decades, since the days of my grandparents. Some shows do, indeed, stunt cast with ‘names’ in order to sell tickets, but very few do this. My comments were not denying the possibility of some Idol contestants appearing in Broadway shows, I know this has happened with several of them through the years. Some have been talented and have done well, e.g., Frenchie Davis, Tamyra Gray, LaToya London, Clay Aiken, even Fantasia was pretty good in The Color Purple. There’s a difference between cases like theirs and actual stunt casting, more like the situation with Taylor Hicks, and other ‘celebrities’ like Melanie Griffith, David Hasselhoff; in addition to the Weisslers and how they’ve turned certain roles in Chicago into a revolving door of B list celebrities - Sandy Duncan, Jasmine Guy, George Hamilton, John Schneider, Kevin Richardson, Tom Wopat, Billy Zane.

My issue was with your comment about ‘it’s only MT, not high art’, which is not only insulting but it’s also not true. Anyone who has heard Gwen Stewart sing the Seasons of Love solo in Rent or Raul Esparza sing Being Alive in Company or Colm Wilkinson singing Bring Him Home in Les Mis would have no doubt but that they were seeing high art onstage.

cartera, the Spiderman casting issue is still up in the air. They’ve had massive open calls and, from what I’ve heard, still haven’t made final decisions. The show has been pushed back from its original timeline so who knows what will happen. Maybe Julie Taymor will give Adam a call. :)

Just finished watching the finale on DVR and decided who I would have voted for:
Danny Gokey. Sigh.

Amid all the Kris/Adam debate we are ignoring a much larger embarrassment from last night. Megan “Brings Me No” Joy. For the love of all that is tonal and harmonic, why oh why is she part of the touring ten and not Alexis Grace? What were those awful sounds emanating from her throat? Shouldn’t someone sit her down and tell her, in the words of Kara, “Honey, Sweetie, you’re really pretty (especially when you wear a long sleeve shirt) but your voice? It hurts to listen to you. Please never, ever, ever sing in public again.”

Is it croaking, is it choking, just what are those bizarre sounds she makes?
